2677536, sinead oconnor letter on trayvon

lesson seems like the place for this

http://www.smileyandwest.com/treyvon-letter-from-Sinead-O%27Connor.pdf

interesting that she wades into scolding white liberal waters a bit, borderline paternalistic
2677544, I love Sinead, she's a bit nutty tho so I can't read that whole thing

But this is all fairly consistent with the girl who made her first American TV appearance on the Grammys with a PE logo painted on the side of her shaved head & documented a UK Trayvon incident in the 80s with a song called 'Black Boys On Mopeds' on her biggest album.

She's not really coming from the American white-liberal/paternalistic perspective we might be accustomed, she's coming from the perspective of an Irish Bipolar Priestess who dabbles in Rastafarianism & who has consistently railed against the white male corporate power structure (while at the same time aligning herself with black artists & causes) since she first stepped on the scene.

Knowing a bit about her life, upbringing, & career I give her a wider birth on some of this stuff than others because I know it's coming from a good place.

That being said I had to bail out of that essay.
2677545, yeah i tried to be cautious w/ my comments

i always try to use words like "seems" to be clear that im not making statements of fact

she ripped the popes picture on snl, ha, she's got balls.
2677682, yup, she came at the Catholic Church for the molestation shit

ten years before the majority of people even acknowledged there was an issue.

She got loudly booed at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary tribute (same week Frank Sinatra threatened to kick her ass) upon introduction because she had blasted the first Bush Administration over Iraq (ironic considering the crowd was there to pay respects to the author of 'Masters Of War') so she stopped the band from playing then switched on the spot to singing Bob Marley's 'War' a capella for three minutes while being booed by a sold-out MSG before walking off the stage.

The girl's fearless & all heart.
2677685, shes a rastafarian now

2677700, yup, I actually liked the reggae-covers albums she did w/Sly & Robbie

I know somebody on this board bristled the last time I mentioned that here but I enjoyed hearing her voice in that context, she also didn't pick that many of the go-to reggae cuts outside of maybe 'Marcus Garvey' or 'Downpressor Man'.

You can tell that project was born out of love/mutual respect & shared appreciation for music.
2677823, i still haven't heard it. i downloaded it once but my

after the pic rip?

"bipolar" is an understatement.

.. Reminds me of my favorite Monch verses..

"who can you trust when the priest is now The Beast?"

And..

"I'll rip ya shit like Sinead when I...."

"Latin Tridentine Chirch" is a renegade sect of Catholicism.. Her vow of celibacy lasted 3 months.. Well, at least she was honest with herself..
2677768, it wasn't a sect recognized by the Catholic Church in Rome

I just remember her walking away crying while the crowd HARD and Kris Kristofferson was trying to comfort her.
2677850, Anyone into her discography?

2677872, I lost touch with it awhile ago but I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

is probably the best place to start.

Either there or Lion & The Cobra (her debut) but I'd say the second one takes the best elements from the debut and improves upon them while adding a few new wrinkles.

That was the album that made her a major star for a brief time before she began a campaign of career suicide over the course of the next couple years afterwards.

2678100, nobody got a problem with her dissing the shit outta rap?
Posted by boyoucrazy, Mon Mar-26-12 02:40 PM
i mean cool cool she gave props to the black race and all
(even if it is alotta black devils out here just like white ones)

still cool that she slapped white folks with the 'u come from a nigga' angle

but yo

you just said rap is ALL bling bling and there ain't no good in it

did i miss misread that?

seemed like that's what she said, to me
2678194, yeah, you did misread that, she actually said the opposite

she's been on the record as a big rap music fan since well.....the part I already mentioned about painting a 'Public Enemy' logo on the side of her head as a show of solidarity in her first American TV appearance in 1987 or '88 Grammies (the one Fresh Prince/PE/etc boycotted for the fact that the rap award wasn't televised).

Going on later to publically protest on behalf of 2 Live Crew during their obscenity scandal, playing 'Dead Homies' by Cube as her lights-go-down-song prior to coming out to shows back in the day, etc.
2678201, uh, actually she kinda did
Posted by Selah, Mon Mar-26-12 06:10 PM
out of one side of her mouth she said she "adores it" (page 2) then out of the other side she says:

"It.. along with most music nowadays.. is about falsenesses and vanities. Bling, drugs, sex, guns and people- dissing. Its giving you the message you ain't 'good enough' if you don't have bling and ting.. and money. Or if you're not what it deems 'sexy'."

that sounds pretty broad brush and damning to me.

You can say how "great" she is and all the things did back in the day, but lets not ignore what she actually said HERE

*shrug*
2678288, show me how any of that says she's implying ALL rap music is that

>>show me how any of that says she's implying ALL rap music is that

let's look at the quote

"It.. along with most music nowadays.. is about falsenesses and vanities."

the "it" is rap music, you know this because of the context. The preceding sentence says:

"Don't be guided by rap. Gangsta or otherwise. Sure.. enjoy it.. adore it…as I do.. but realize this.. rap ain't about your civil or spiritual rights, baby boys and girls."

What else could the "it" be? And note she didn't quantify. She EXPLICITLY said "Gangsta or otherwise"

when she gets to "Rap ain't about your civil or spiritual rights" she's talking about all of it there too.

Next - just in case you missed it in the previous sentence she casting the net wider rather than reducing it to "some" rap

"It.. along with most music nowadays.."

Followed by her explanation of what rap (her word) is about:

It.. along with most music nowadays.. is about falsenesses and vanities. Bling, drugs, sex, guns and people- dissing.

After the list she summarizes the affect of it:

"Its giving you the message you ain't 'good enough' if you
don't have bling and ting.. and money. Or if you're not what it deems 'sexy'. (This is true of all popular music not rap alone. I know. Its tragically true of all popular youth culture the world over)."

The ONLY hedge is throwing in "popular" but that contradicts the previous.

If you can't see that, at best, she is sloppy then I can't call it
2678313, hohohohohohoho.

I can't stop laughing.

This is so hilarious to me I can't even articulate myself.

Could a black person.......somewhere, somehow, please fuck her so she can get over this EXTREMELY patronizing, condescending fetish she has?
