2671272, let's make a list of songs that EVERYBODY likes.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Mar-08-12 01:50 PM
i know, i know.
you're thinking that
there's no such thing as a song that everybody likes.

i disagree.

there are certain songs that all humans have a positive reaction to.

never, in my life,
have i ever heard anybody say something bad about
the jackson 5, "abc."

never, in my life,
have i ever heard anybody say something bad about
bel biv devoe, "poison."
(not even old people that don't like "new music.")

does anybody on the planet dislike
"smells like teen spirit?"
i've even seen that song get love at parties w/ nothing but
black folks. lol

anyway,
add on.

2671279, I know exactly what you mean
Posted by Delajoo, Thu Mar-08-12 02:08 PM
Ubiquitous music.

I think that there is such a thing as an objectively good song, that hits on all levels, that speaks to all people.

Michael Jackson was involved in more than his fair share, maybe the most prolific when it comes to this. Billie Jean being the prime example.

Elton John's Tiny Dancer?

The Beatles have some of the most universally loved music. Maybe Strawberry Fields, or Hey Jude.

It's a bit harder with rap, as I feel like its a lot more people who simply can't get down with "rapping" in general as a form of music. But I'd say Biggie's "Big Poppa", and Run DMC's "It's Tricky" are pretty hard to hate.

EVERYONE loves Aloe Blacc's "I Need a Dollar" that i've met. Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" might be a bad choice of what that man can do, but easily one of his most accesible, well known, and universally love joints.

Would love to have a compilation of what everyone thinks of a ubiquitous song is.

Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Mar-08-12 02:18 PM
i didn't want to turn this into a
"joe corn mo stans for michael jackson" post,
but yeah... MJ in his prime = universally beloved.

i've said it before,
and i'll say it again...

everybody loves michael jackson.

even the folks that crack jokes.
even the folks that try to say he's "overrated."

yes, even those people lose their minds
when "rock with you" or "billie jean" or "don't stop till you get enough" comes on at the club.

everybody loves michael jackson.

>(not even old people that don't like "new music.")

OldPro didn't outright say he disliked it, but he disliked the trend that that song started.

to me, it's probably top 3 NJS song of all time ("Groove Me", "My Prerogative")
2671286, we could attack a lot of classic material that way.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Mar-08-12 02:24 PM
and the thing is,
i see his point.

but that still doesn't mean he dislikes the song.

prince started a lot of trends
that were bad for black music,
but his material is still classic.

we can't hate on the movie "jaws" just because
it eventually created "transformers 2."

2671284, this is OKP - good luck
Posted by Selah, Thu Mar-08-12 02:20 PM
i've never-not-once seen something someone here isn't proud to tell you they hate
2671285, which is precisely why i made this post. LOL
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Mar-08-12 02:22 PM
even here, we can find things that everybody agrees on.
for example, i have never seen anybody hate on the movie
"coming to america."

even when there was a post DEVOTED to snarking
shit that was supposedly "universially loved,"
nobody could come up with any snark for that movie.

certain songs are the same way, i think.

2671300, all right then - my list
Posted by Selah, Thu Mar-08-12 02:58 PM
superstition - stevie wonder

what I say? - Ray charles

papa's got a brand new bag - james brown

2671335, naw... i believe there are songs that everybody likes.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Thu Mar-08-12 03:51 PM
for certain songs like "my girl,"
you MIGHT get a few people that say "i'm tired of hearing it."
"i'm not the biggest fan/ overrated."

but there are certain songs
that nobdy will say, "i don't like that song" or "that song kind of blows."

have you ever heard anybody say
"i can't stand 'lovely day'" by bill withers?
2671289, EWF - September

True story.

Shit's like the hip hop 'Good Times' and you still get idiots on here trying to knock it down because of its stature.

2671984, I don't think anybody "hates" it even a little bit. But some of us
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Mar-11-12 05:44 AM
just don't think it's the best Hip Hop song of all time. However, when I say that, people act like I said it was the worst song of all time, and will immediately call out three random wack tracks and say "so you think it's worst than these songs, huh???" People get way too sensitive over it.

For the gen pop....even globally, I'd go with Bob Marley. Maybe 'one love'.

Dre & Snoop - Nuthin' but a G Thang
2671540, It makes me so angry that no one's responded to this yet.

No one hates Juicy! NO ONE. Everyone sings the lyrics as soon as it comes on. And dances. And shit. Fuck.
2671543, i feel you.
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Fri Mar-09-12 11:19 AM
shit, even *I* know the first verse to that song,
and i was not a fan of hip hop at the time it came out.

it's just a feel good record.

everybody likes it.
2671985, I've heard a lot of folks complain that the lyrics were "wack" or
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Mar-11-12 05:46 AM
too simple, mainly the lines like "Rap n stuff, gats n stuff"...and then even more folks claim that the Pete Rock version is way better.

2672344, Wait...what? What Pete Rock version??
Posted by silentwar, Mon Mar-12-12 09:44 AM
Did I miss something? Link please bro.
2672134, i personally didn't care for the beat or the lyrics.

2672324, You and R-Tistic are the first complaints...

Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Fri Mar-09-12 11:04 AM
no matter who sings it,
it sounds sad.

kermit the frog sang it,
and it was one of the most depressing things i've ever heard.

I have to admit I'm out of my element when it comes to music everyone loves but There are some songs that I find it hard to see anyone hating on in this post MJ in his prime chief among those. I don't own any of MJ 's music but I have to admit that his catalog knocks.

2671940, Ha! I strongly disliked ''Poison''
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sat Mar-10-12 10:55 PM
Can't say I still do that because it's OK compared with most current hits but I could never get into that particular era of R&B at all-it sounded boyband to me and a bit girly.

Honestly, I can't stand''Smells like teen spirit'' either but it might be a case of overexposure, I sort of dug it when it came out but even then, my favorite songs on ''Nevermind'' were those that did NOT run the soft/¤4loud dynamic into the ground. Anyway, that song is too plain to have replay value for me.

I agree about ''ABC'' though. Also, does anyone hate ''Papa was a rolling stone''?
2671958, Felt the same way about Nirvana for the longest ...
Posted by PierreOrdinaire, Sun Mar-11-12 12:54 AM

>Honestly, I can't stand''Smells like teen spirit'' either but

I was rendered incapable of appreciating the group until the fucking *ZZZZZSSSSSSSSSTTTTTZZZZZZZZZZZATIC* surrounding them died down.

At the time I shrugged and was like, "Big deal."

But they deserve their props, no doubt.

do folks that aren't deep into soul know about that song?
