in the same way Teddy could ride them uptempo arrangements with some soul.... Dave would have been cold with that.

David Ruffin's voice had the perfect mix of grit and smoothness in it.

that would have given him the solo discography a voice like his deserved.

Norman Whitfield and Holland,Dozier and Holland coundln't? mind you I love Gamble and Huff, however in case you didn't get the memo they were highly influenced by those cats at motown.

the only cat from the Philly sound i could see on David Ruffin would be the Great Thom Bell. now that I would have dug to hear.

and then a Burt Bachrach would have been cool for him as well IMO.

Ruffin was badd and yet he didn't have solo career bad in him and that is alright because not every lead cat does.

every song that the o'jays sang
could have been sang by david ruffin.

it would have been a good fit.

Teddy Pendergrass for One was marketed differently. RUffin was never that type of artist. RUffin was happening before the Motown original of Teddy Pendergrass and his name was Marvin gaye. and did Ruffin ever mix themes and topics as well as Gaye? naw 1)

Eddie Levert had a distinctive singing style and his voice and the O'jays were a better fit there as well.


going by your logic you could also say that Eddie Kendricks could have rode the Philly International train and hit as well.

IMO you are insulting the Motown brass because Ruffin already was surroounded by the top in flight songwriters and Producers, Problem was his consistance and dependence.

believe me Berry Gordy would have pushed his thing if Ruffin's demons didn't get the best of him.

IMO Ruffin could have reinvented his wheel like how Johnny Gutiar watson, Johnny Taylor and and what ZZ Hill Later did with his voice and it would have worked IMO,

i agree that ruffin's deamons got the best of him,
and that's why he didn't really get heat behind him at motowown.

i have no reason to believe that motown would "sabatoge" ruffin's
his career or anything like that.

...antics and habits, those shows don't always get the big picture or all the stories from other industry heads cause you will be surprised how rumors spread quickly and how some can get a bad rep.
