The crazy thing is, I'm pretty sure most of his buzz is still intact. He's just too interesting to dismiss.

i think while we are constantly checking for new updates and new content on our laptops and smartphones every minute, the sad reality is nothing is ACTUALLY happening despite how hard we try to fool ourselves.

music, I will be ready to receive it. He could very well be goofing around enjoying his semi-stardom while less interesting artists are already working on their 2nd mixtape/project of 2012. Ah well.

I'm not a super fan, but I like dude's music, and it's kinda annoying.

At the end of the day, it's his career, he can do with it what he pleases, but it seems like such a wasted opportunity.
2669690, He doesn't care either way, so why should I let it bother me?

He may have been positioned as a hip-hop savior, but that doesn't seem to be what he's all about. He's just an interesting dude who makes dope music. He's managed to parlay that a certain level of fame. He seems to enjoy his notoriety quite a bit. Maybe he's scared of losing that, and he isn't sure if he wants blow up past this. Maybe he thinks rap money ain't shit, and he wants to do more commercials and TV. Who knows.

A lot of today's artists have lost their mystique, mainly due to the growth of social media. Guys like Blu, Doom and Jay Electronica stay interesting because they seem to go to great lengths to keep their fans guessing. I don't know if a middle ground exists unfortunately, so this is what we get.

Considering the group of people that I put him in, would you rather he be more like Blu? Who do you think frustrates their fans more? The guy who doesn't release anything? Or the guy who releases a ton of lo-fi material for top dollar & puts on highly uninspired shows?
2669653, His mainstream buzz is dead.
Posted by agentB, Fri Mar-02-12 10:36 AM
His loyalists will still check for him though.

But when Exhibit C dropped, he had radio DJs playing it when it wasn't even on the paid playlist. It was just undeniable, especially with those DJs that wanted to keep that real hiphop alive.
2669663, No disrespect but I don't have faith that you could properly measure

such a thing. Do you have a formula for measuring that? If you're confident in your assessment, go ahead and break your formula down for us. He doesn't have any new music or visuals out, so he isn't being talked about. He certainly didn't wear out his welcome, so whatever mainstream love he had will come back if he drops more hot music. And let's not forget he has a deal now, even if his next song doesn't live up to expectations his reach will be even bigger.

or less after the commercial aired. To act like the commercial won't help increase his profile is just dumb, I'm not even trying to hear that argument. It's certainly bigger than him dropping a new song.

What's faulty about it?

How much buzz does this guy have due to 2 commercials?

unless the commercial tells people to go to youtube to check out exhibit C all it does is pay Badu's rent.

What he needs to do is put a damn song IN a commercial...

2669711, It would make more sense if you said "F the commercials. I want music"

I can respect that a lot more than trying to act like you are worried about his "buzz". If he has enough pull to get these types of opportunities I'm sure his buzz will be fine when it comes time to actually promote some new music.

for his music. its a sneaker commercial. combined with the fact that he doesnt have any music featured in it. i would say this shit will only interest people who already know who he is.
2669696, And I have no doubt that his album is going to get a proper setup.
Posted by self_ish, Fri Mar-02-12 11:39 AM
It's not as if this dude is on the radio and/or blogs venting about Jay-Z not releasing his album, or himself from his deal. Folks nowadays are just used to rappers getting signed, dropping a couple of mixtapes then releasing an album within maybe a years time. Dude is gonna put an album out. May not be this year even, but it's gonna happen. And when it does he'll have a huge machine behind him touting him as the second coming/return of the real/epitome of hip-hop/etc. As a result A LOT of (older) tastemakers/dj's will be championing his cause, and he'll also get those Mos/Kweli type of props from other mainstream rappers i.e. the obligatory "real hip-hop" artist namedrop.

Folks just need to stop acting like his not releasing music is a personal affront to them. Or not. Whatever. I know I'M not losing any sleep over it. If/when he does drop an LP I'll be copping it because I've enjoyed what I've heard so far from the cat. That's all that matters to me.

Posted by Stadiq, Fri Mar-02-12 11:22 AM
ever...

The problem is the dude seems to be way too impressed with himself in all honesty. When that Mobb Deep track dropped there was some interview where he was completely satisfied with all of the hype it created....

didn't talk about what the hype was for

or the art of it

or future plans

Its like he wants hype for the sake of hype and thats it.

The interview almost seemed like he truly is only in it to build anticipation.

But again, for what?

Also, it died down QUICKLY.

Exhibit C was huge...as one poster already pointed out.

He'll never be able to TOP that, IMO.

As always, there are those will make excuses for him, etc.

But something is up. In this era, his lack of output is truly ridiculous.

It really is a waste of talent and hype.

I was referring to him as Jay-elecanibus...but really, thats unfair to Canibus at this point.

Damn shame.

2669704, Dude may just be the Earl Manigault of hip hop
Posted by Abstract_TheEclectic_Nubian, Fri Mar-02-12 11:51 AM
He a bad MF, but distractions and gassed up ego may fuckhim up.

Its actually kinda sad, I turned my homeboy on to him. Now just about everytime he sees me, he asks "So when is Jay Electronica comin' out with an actual album? All I can tell him, is "Hell I don't know, but he fuckin' his buzz up".
2669705, Lazy?
Posted by Thanes1975, Fri Mar-02-12 11:52 AM

After that Jay Elect runs away with it, his catalog (released or not) is superior. With that being said, Last Emperor had the chance to be something special. I remember seeing dude perform back in 95 when nobody really knew who he was, the whole crowd was blown away.

Jay E has released very dope music...thats the point.

That's why he is frustrating and his career has turned into a shame at this point.

You can't compre him to Last Emp because Last Emp at least released ONE album...and can at least say initially his lack of output was due to label problems.

This thread is actually proof at how the tides are turning.

Yes its getting a lot of attention...but its mostly negative.

As I said above, his hype will never be bigger than Exhibit C.

I think this will be one of those classic instances where the Lesson thinks they have their finger on the pulse of the hip-hop record buying audience, but will be proven to be horribly wrong. Maybe his hype in "The Lesson" won't ever be bigger than "Exhibit C". That's possible. But realistically once he drops some more quality music, everyone will be back onboard the Jay Electronica train.

2669891, my point is it will never be higher...in other words
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Mar-02-12 06:18 PM

No internet rapper/artist can ask for MORE hype than what Jay E had after Exhibit C.

He didn't capitalize.

So, as you say, he can drop more heat now...but it wont be BIGGER than then IMO.

And I say that because 1)thats about as much hype as a blog rapper can ask for and 2) even more people will have bigger doubts each time he pulls some dumb sh*t and 3)he has no doubt lost fans in all of this

He could drop Exhibit D and blogs would be blowing up, sure...but more and more people won't even bother because dude has yet to actually deliver. The doubts just grow and grow.

And what could be even worse is if he drops something not on Exhibit C level...people will really grab the torches. Look at that Mob Deep track.

Its frustrating a hip hop fan

And its completely crazy to me just generally speaking

And its not just the Lesson that feels this way. Actually, the Lesson seems too forgiving of him if you ask me.

I am referring to the internet...but he is an internet rapper. No one offline (who is offline these days anyway) knows about him unless they were hipped to him by some rap nerd like me.

And I'm done introducing people to him. I'm sure Im not alone- and that has also killed his buzz I imagine.

In 09 I was telling every music fan I knew about him. Now? Sh*t, what would I even say?

Hey heres a collection of songs by some never was from 3 years ago? smh
