im surprised us Latin folks didn't support it more. When it dropped I thought it was gunna do Selena numbers, but i got to the theater with my hefa and there was like 15 people in there :(
2669537, I've heard some people
Posted by lakai336, Fri Mar-02-12 02:10 AM
say that they felt that the drug parts of it overshadowed the music parts. I liked it, but then again I was born in Puerto Rico in the late 80's and mostly raised in Florida, i.e. if something is seriously misrepresented, it wouldn't immediately pop out to me.
2669767, that movie had so many factual errors it might as well have been fiction
Posted by Justin_Maldonado_7, Fri Mar-02-12 01:58 PM
that movie was a farce

only j-lo can make a movie about hector lavoe from the perspective of his mistress who he knocked up, got married and basically lost everything for...( his first wife, his kid, neither who they talked about in the movie )

Did they make Malcolm X from the perspective of Betty?

This is why folks didnt support that shit...Hector Lavoe and Marc Anthony are big enough stars that they dont need J-LO as the star of the film for us to support it...that shit was an insult...

2670432, rumor had it that macho camacho paid for his funeral
Posted by Justin_Maldonado_7, Tue Mar-06-12 09:04 AM
and at the hospital...no one came to visit him....all these folks doing tributes and making loot off of hector remakes...pretty much shunned him when he needed them most

aside from the son he has from his first marriage, apparently hector also has another daughter...not sure from who....

everyone pretty much said that puchi drove hector insane...el cantante being from puchi's perspective is like making a movie about whitney houston from bobby brown's perspective...do u really think he is going to make himself look like the bad guy

Dope songs fellas, but if you really wanna know what's up about Hector:

El Cantante is a beautiful song, but i love El Periodico de Ayer; just as beautiful but shorter:

http://youtu.be/PuAPeEvAyiw

Of course there is "Mi Gente", but I find the live version he did at the Ali-Foreman fight-music festival in Zaire to be a very moving, transcendent performance:

http://youtu.be/QBuueYkmYVI

But my all time favorite recording is on Willie Colon's "Timbalero" off of the El Juicio Lp. This is an 8 minute recording that has everything, from bongo/conga madness, and an acapella/horn section breakdown. Here is the studio recording: http://youtu.be/XGHVQeVs4RI

And here it is performing it live on the NYC public tv show "Soul" in '72 (The latin episode featuring Willie and Tito Puente ad Felipe Luciano is just pure gold): http://youtu.be/Cb7xtfVSQyo

FYI, the "Soul" episode can be found here:

2669254, Some of the reasons I love El Cantante and Periodico
Posted by linglinglito, Thu Mar-01-12 11:37 AM
Both are the centerpieces of their albums, the club bangers so to say. Poth songs are lyrically-written perfectly by intelligent, prolific (Cantante is written by Ruben Blades, almost like a "Pagliacci-content-type song, Periodico is by C. Curet Alonso, a very nasty, bitter song about a girl who's love is as useful as "yesterday's newspaper"), and no one else can execute these better, artistically since it imitates his own life story, better than Hector.

Also, both songs are produced and arranged by Willie Colon, so along with his trombone lines, he knows how add that over-the-top elements of those sweeping strings to turn these suckas in to full blown-street dramas, very true to the Salsa Brava nature.

Man, I love they we're talking about this.

not the best in the entire Fania catalog.

Like papo aka lito said, "Periodical De Ayer" is among those...but you did mention the "ENTIRE FANIA CATALOG" soooo...

Justo Betancourt "Pa Bravo Yo"

Hector Lavoe "Que Lio" <--Deep song

Willie Colon "Timbalero" ft. Hector Lavoe

Angel Canales "Hace Tiempo"

Ismael Rivera "Las Caras Lindas" "Mi Negra Es Espera" & my personal favorite "El Nazareno"

Jimmy Sabater "Salchicha Con Huevo"

There's countless joints that I think are too great of songs to just choose ONE. I just don't think "El Cantante" is it though.
2669290, I just got up on these three

2669536, There are plenty to debate that
Posted by lakai336, Fri Mar-02-12 02:08 AM
El Cantante is damn good, but no best.

To add to that. Muchas gracias a mi pai, que es loco con la salsa y siempre taba escuchando salsa en la casa y en el carro.

Hector Lavoe - El Malo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT77krRcVIA
Good lyrics, nice sound.

Hector Lavoe - Che Che Cole
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgId1N1UbLs
This one is so festive sounding and immediately catchy I think people who don't give a shit about salsa would even like it.

Hector Lavoe - El Dia De Mi Suerte
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZK2wCpvwZg&feature=related
Moving lyrics, great rhythm.

Hector Lavoe - Ausencia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZG_WPfOiHYY
Emotional as hell and perfect

And if we're talking whole fania catalog...

Cheo Feliciano - El Raton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q4icTc0gOY

Ruben Blades - Plastico
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCv7e_TNTnY
Exceptionally smart lyricist.

Ruben Blades - Pedro Navaja
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdjEsbpWx9o
Pretty sure it was already mentioned. I think that'd definitely be in the running for best (and most popular) songs in the catalog.

2669658, Ausencia....
Posted by linglinglito, Fri Mar-02-12 10:40 AM
One of the best ballads ever. We can hear that heartbreak in his voice, but the best part is that percussive piano transition between the verses and the chorus; that is some heavy shit:

2671319, Yeah it's a good one
Posted by lakai336, Thu Mar-08-12 03:23 PM
Probably the first slow one that I heard. I knew the major hits and a lot of album cuts from my dad, but I never really delved into it for myself until I was like 20 (3 years ago or so).

It's funny, I guess I had a similar path to a lot of people regarding their parent's music. I hated all Salsa and Merengue throughout my teenage years and would complain during car rides or put on headphones and listen to my underground rap shit.

Then as a young adult, I started to appreciate Salsa and found myself going back and asking my dad about songs and albums he used to play lol.
2669666, Some other Fania Cuts
Posted by linglinglito, Fri Mar-02-12 10:54 AM
I love Larry Harlow's "La Cartera"

http://youtu.be/HHDUWfwQXKc

Cheo Feliciano's "Salome"

http://youtu.be/bJrkMZuB_qk

Azuquita's "Azuquita-California"

http://youtu.be/bJrkMZuB_qk

I would also suggest if you're new to Fania, or Salsa music in general, a nice place to start is that 1970-1973 Willie Colon album run featuring Hector Lavoe as his singer. This is like the equivalent to any important album run from any genre's most important artists. Really innovative stuff Willie was doing by exploring further than mambo/son/rumba/guaguanco/boogaloo canon by paying homage to the direct Afro influence on his music:

1970: La Cosa Nuestra
1971: La Gran Fuga/The Big Break
1972: El Juicio
1973: Lo Mato

Every track on these are a killer; even his 1972 Xmas lp "Asalto Navideņo has "La Murga" which gives any of these Fania songs a run for their money:

http://kfai.org/radiopocho
2669717, you can dowload them right off the fania site
Posted by T Reynolds, Fri Mar-02-12 12:20 PM
2669755, 2:20 - 3:40 on periodico de ayer does something to me
Posted by Binlahab, Fri Mar-02-12 01:29 PM
i dunno what you'd call that progression, if its just the horns in the round or what...but when the strings come in around 3:05?

then the trumpet stabs around 3:20 or so SMH

so nice they got to repeat the sequence twice.

now THAT is music

2669763, Right? I call those the 'reflection section', lol.
Posted by linglinglito, Fri Mar-02-12 01:43 PM
What makes Willie's arrangements unique is his brass section, and he usually beefs up on trombones to give it that badass "brava" sound. Not only that, the trombones will be trading different lines back and forth, like how Marvin multi-tracks his vocals.

You're right on about it evoking those feelings.

http://kfai.org/radiopocho
2669766, this is making me wanna learn how to play trombone for real.

best song of the entire genre. fuck a label

El Cantante isnt the best song of Hector's catalog...lol

Bandolera is absolutely fuckin epic, my favorite of his danceable songs...( el retrato de mama might be my favorite slow song of his )

his boleros are actually as good or even better than most of his jams

Going strong since the early 60s, not to mention all of the session work he did for Fania, other latin labels, and non-latin artists.

Who could forget his cover of "Pastime Paradise"? Stevie was originally going for a "Latin" feel when he first recorded, but then it took a life of it's own. Perhaps Ray's version is something he had in mind...
