I think the whole mess with LOVE MAN (what eventually became IN OUR LIFETIME?) and other stuff soured Marvin on working with his long-time record label.

It's a shame, because everything about the songs that were intended to be there, and even the album cover...

...felt like it would have just worked. Marvin transitioning into the "Funky Uncle" with "Ego Tripping Out" as the lead? Sheeeeeeeeit. Those songs sound more like "1979" than "1981" (year it was released) as it is.
