I'm there...

Yeah, sometimes they get overrated a little too often...But when they were ON, they were the real deal...

Their rhythm section was ALWAYS sick...
2667549, Imho one of the greatest rock bands ever
Posted by BigReg, Sun Feb-26-12 01:02 PM
Let's get it ut of the way now: They were as original as a box of Target Branded 'Sugar Cereal Flakes'.

But as far as playing in pocket aas one well oiled machine and pushing the big guitar sound that we find synonymous with rock music today? They are peerless. Not one note, not one drum lick, not none vocal syncopation was out of place or less then larger then life.
2667618, easily greater than The Rolling Stones
Posted by BarTek, Sun Feb-26-12 05:38 PM
They have a few good songs but fall short to Zepp imho.

2667773, I love how people call Jimmy Page sloppy, but was all about the rawness.
Posted by Admbmb, Mon Feb-27-12 08:47 AM
He used to be a session musician when he started out and can play with perfection. If you read some of his interviews, he was really shooting for a more loose sound. He didnt belive in doing 80 takes on a song and that it sterilized the song. Thats why he's the best. I'd rather hear Page's stuff over Satriani's, much like how I like Madlib beats over Will.I.Am.

Zeppelin is the GOAT.
2667996, But sloppiness only sounded raw on the first 3 albums
Posted by zuma1986, Mon Feb-27-12 05:36 PM
By IV and songs like "Stairway to Heaven" it's hard to sound sloppy on a 7 min rock opus. And not soon after they changed the guitar sound so it had terrible distortion. So the playing got less sloppy but the sound of it was like a sloppy fart.
2667780, Since forever.

"Your current frequencies of understanding outweigh that which has been given for you to understand." Saul Williams
2667965, Not too much after a certain point...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Mon Feb-27-12 04:53 PM
I dig the first three albums, about half of IV, VERY little on "Houses of the holy" and "Physical Grafitti", about two-three songs on "Presence" and practically nothing on "in through the out door". Their debut is their best IMO, closely followed by III and II. The rest I can live without outside of a couple of songs. I LOVE 70's hard rock but this band as a whole feels more like some pompous classic rock/stadium-juggernaut; not my thing. They are not as repulsive as the Who was in that era but not too far behind. Except of course the first couple of albums that are really good...

EDIT:I guess I am a fan after all since I dig a couple of records, many great bands only have like 1-3 killer albums so they are in good company...
2668162, That was a pussyfooting post.

Ehhh...mehhhh...kindaaaaa....

If you heard 'Kashmir' right now for the first time you'd pee your pants. John Bonham got the best sound and is the best rock drummer ever. He had that swing and no other rock drummer comes close.
2669370, thank you basedDenny
Posted by astralblak, Thu Mar-01-12 03:57 PM
!!!
2669401, I never really liked Kashmir...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Thu Mar-01-12 05:09 PM
...so your'e wrong. Plant's voice was shut at that stage and the "chorus" is anti-climactic. And yes, Bonham was a great drummer; don't know what that has to do with anything really-a band is more than the sum of its part.
2669504, I hated Dyer Maker and All of My Love.
Posted by Admbmb, Thu Mar-01-12 10:34 PM
The rest is crackrock though.
