2666819, This new Kid Cudi rock album is fuckin terrible
Posted by CMcMurtry, Fri Feb-24-12 01:12 PM
I know, I know, to a lot of people, this should be obvious, but I'm one of the (seemingly) few people around these parts who actually likes dude's music a lot.

Yeah, he's emo. Yeah, in terms of bars, he's not much of a rapper. And yeah, a lot of his off stage antics are hilariously self destructive.

But somehow it worked for me. I think both of his first two albums are pretty friggin good, minus a few missteps here and there. I still play the shit out of both of them on the regular. "Heart of a Lion", "Cudi Zone", "All Along", "Ashin Kusher", "Simple As", shit even "Pursuit of Happiness", and many others are GREAT songs.

When he split with Plain Pat and Emile, I grew a little skeptical, cuz so much of Cudi's sound was tied into those two, and the production was as important as what he brought.

I've never been one to tell an artist to stick to something if their heart is elsewhere, because if someone is making music that they're not into, it's gonna be pretty evident in the product.

But yo, Kid Cudi, stick to that other shit. This ain't it buddy. At all.

Lil' Wayne's Rebirth album laughs at how bad this is.

Self indulgent artists around the world take note. This is what happens when your eyes are bigger than your stomach, or perhaps, when you don't have someone in your circle to tell you when your shit is wack.
2666829, I still say he's a pretty solid songwriter but a throughly shitty performer
Posted by BigReg, Fri Feb-24-12 01:22 PM
I don't mean in the live sense, I mean in the 'I can't rap or sing' sense.

I agree with you on that his first two albums had some excellent songs. I still think they were held back by Cudi, lol.

Him trying a whole new genre was a laughably bad idea. In particular as a frontman considering where the main ingredient you need is 'swagger' of which he's got none.
2666867, You're talking about WZRD, right?
Posted by dunk, Fri Feb-24-12 01:48 PM
Were you at a listening party or did you listen to a leak?

So far I've only heard the two singles. I think "Brake" is great and "Teleport to Me, Jamie" is okay.
2666869, It's leaked

2666876, I just don't get Kid cudi, like at all.
Posted by MME, Fri Feb-24-12 01:55 PM
the only song i liked from him is "day n nite" that's it.
2666897, Agreed - like did he make a pack with Satan or just Rupert Murdoch?
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 02:12 PM
smh. I mean it was shameful to ever see him and Radiohead at the same festival on the same ticket. Shameful.

2666896, Or he just can't play.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 02:11 PM
What is it with this new trend of posers with Guitars...
and it's going all the way up the ladder.

Learn to play first. SMH.

But I agree with one of the other posters, people are giving these half-assed music chords as something phenomenal these days. I don't think many artist take time to understand music theory.
2666909, Man it's ridiculous. Seriously. Total posers trying to live out
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 02:25 PM
fantasies. I mean have these cats ever heard of lessons?
Or are ego's so huge they don't care?

I actually heard an electro act say that people call him the new Prince. Dude did his entire show with a MicroKorg. I wanted to beat his ass.

He played nothing but a Microkorg. SMH.

Cudi made it big with no talent so why should he learn how to actually play or sing or write a good verse?

2666925, But w/o beating a dead horse - even the cats with talent are posing
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 02:46 PM
w guitars these days.

I'll just leave it there. It's sickening. Man I wish I grew up in the 70's and could see Led Zeppelin live at MSG... now that's a fucking show.
2666910, The Day n Night remix is his only hot song...
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-24-12 02:26 PM
The guy is a mumbling pile of shit...

Can't sing.. can't rap...

and somehow connects with an audience who says he speaks to them.

It's the Sarah Palin playbook... I'll never forget hearing ignorant white females saying the love Palin because it makes them feel like they could be president.

It's the same thing.... kids who can't rap or sing love Cudi because they can relate to him.

2666912, Best description yet. Makes sense.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 02:30 PM
2666914, Thing is, even the stuff that I liked before about him is non existant here
Posted by CMcMurtry, Fri Feb-24-12 02:32 PM
The hooks aren't catchy and the melodies are awful.

Dude can't SING from a traditional standpoint, however, he managed to get away with it before.

This time? Not even a little.
2666939, RE: This new Kid Cudi rock album is fuckin terrible
Posted by cheesecake, Fri Feb-24-12 03:02 PM
Yup. The entire album outside of teleport is awful. You know what I think it is? So many of these rap artists (see Weezy too) don't know shit about rock, and if you don't know your history on a genre your trying to work within, much less innovate in, it's gonna come out corny as hell. Of course I don't know for sure how far Cudi's knowledge of rock extends, but I infer it doesn't go very deep judging from these contrived, wack-ass songs.
2666954, Seriously that is part of the problem - however the other part is
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-24-12 03:16 PM
folks trying to be 'rockstars' in general. That whole... mentality/slang was out of control. It was like seeing a blackman with a guitar was chic - meanwhile there were tons of black guitarists who were fantastic but because they won't get a fucking gumby cut and rock ultra skinny jeans they are overlooked. This is hideous.

Although I don't hate Cudi nearly as much as you do (I like him, but his albums fall in that "OK from time to time" category and don't ever take up too much of my listening time) you're points in this post are quite valid my friend.

TV On The Radio is pretty much the only modern rock band I'v seen with black guys playing instruments that got any kind of buzz. Lil' Wayne and others do it, on some experimental, check me out I'm different shit and people suddenly care.

Granted, I think the majority of people who like the rock albums put out by such artists would readily admit that the musician in question isn't a guitar virtuoso or anything like that. I think they just look at it and say "wow that's cool, he can play an instrument to" lol.

But yeah, I don't know, aside from these boards (and sometimes on these boards) I've felt the majority of hip-hop heads taste in rock (black and white fans) is quite suspect. It shows a lot in the music. Most of the time's Eminem's incorporated rock and roll influences in his music it sounds like shit. BOB's taste in rock is about as corny as it comes.

All in all it's like watching someone in an amateur or entry-level stage be overly confident and putting it on display for everyone. Hip-hop is easy to poke fun at and it's the main topic on these boards. I'm sure there's examples in other genres of someone jumping in and doing an amateur ass work too (maybe some rock musicians trying country or folk, or worse yet, a rap album).
2667256, Nah man I don't hate anybody
Posted by Artful Dodger, Sat Feb-25-12 09:41 AM
that's giving it too much thought.

The problem with your post is the word buzz -

there are alot of black rockers who get down.

247Spyz
BadBrains

are staple performers but there are millions that followed that path.

Like Mexican Metal - huge movement. Never seen one post on OKP about it. They could care less too.

That said, a buzz doesn't cover everything.

Same with jazz, blues artists.

My opinion.
2666979, I dig it. it's not really that different from his other stuff.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Fri Feb-24-12 03:53 PM
the music isnt out of character for him and a lot of it works well.

i mean can you honestly say you wouldnt expect to hear a song like The Dream Time Machine, Teleport 2 Me, Upper Room or Efflictim from him?

there's a dud or two on the album but it turned out a lot better than i ever expected.
2667019, honestly I'd be worried if folks 'round here liked it

2667042, The problem with Cudi doing a rock album
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri Feb-24-12 04:51 PM
Is he never mastered his craft to begin with... its not like his rapping improved or his singing improved. It seems like this was done out of spite due to falling out with Plain Pat

I've heard some stories about Cudi being a pure uncut raw asshole.... and this is from people who want him to win and consider him a friend.
2667050, what happend between him and Plain
Posted by DolphinTeef, Fri Feb-24-12 05:08 PM
I still aint heard all of this album but "Brake" and "Teleport" is that fire
2667841, Cudi on some coke "rock" start bullshit...
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-27-12 12:08 PM
In Feb 2011:

“Pat and Emile are doing their own thing, i wish them well. I have a diff vision, for music, for the world. im just doing the right thing, i come from a different place. people lose sight of the mission. cant expect everyone to be built like me. when people have different visions, you gotta go your own way.”

I wouldn't be surprised if Plain Pat and Emile said the same thing to Cudi that Cudi said to Wale in Complex...

"Then people like Wale get mad that ‘Ye ain’t give him no beats—’Ye ain’t give you no beats because we ain’t f*cking with your raps. It’s not a conspiracy theory. We don’t f*ck with you musically, so we’re not going to provide music for you.....

I’m unf*ckwittable; no one can knock me off my sh*t. I’m an unstoppable force, I’m a bullet. My trajectory is to the sky. N*ggas got to do something really spectacular to f*ck with me and my realm, and n*ggas be so bitter that you hear it in their voice.”

This nicca Cudi speaking for all of Good Music? Who knows what money he fucked up when he said that...

I'm not a Wale fan but the dude did a song with Gaga and Cudi was dropped from a Gaga tour...

Dude has no idea how the industry works...
2667847, What's ironic about that is Wale is now WAY hotter than Cudi
Posted by CMcMurtry, Mon Feb-27-12 12:16 PM
2667879, they are in different realms...Cudi won't need 2-3 extra mixtapes
Posted by DolphinTeef, Mon Feb-27-12 01:25 PM
per album cycle to keep people interested.

He's essentially an alternative POP artist.
Wale's a run of the mill rapper.
2667896, RE: they are in different realms...Cudi won't need 2-3 extra mixtapes
Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Feb-27-12 01:57 PM
It was still disrespectful and down right ignant to put in print.

I don't give a damn if he was on that pure uncut cosmic Columbian raw powder...

there is no drug on this earth that could get Cudi high enough to criticize another man's "raps"

2667910, We'll see how this shit sells
Posted by CMcMurtry, Mon Feb-27-12 02:35 PM
2668423, it doesn't matter how it sells in comparison to Wale
Posted by DolphinTeef, Tue Feb-28-12 03:44 PM
Wale will be Memphis Bleek status as soon as MMG looses steam.

Cudi has a devoted FANBASE he can do 50K and tour the globe. 1 album every 1.5 years

Wale can do 50K and tour hood spots opening for the flavor of the month...maybe

do you see how invaluable it is to have your own style and devoted fanbase?
2668153, ding ding ding.

a good mix of Pop, hip-hop/trip-hop beats and rock riffs + a dash of electronic music.
2667201, I remember a similar post when his first album dropped
Posted by IslaSoul, Sat Feb-25-12 12:59 AM

though when I eventually heard it, very much enjoyed it.

2667203, *shrugs * I like it

Posted by atruhead, Tue Feb-28-12 05:10 PM

if not, you'll shit on it
2667604, wasn't the first one horrible too?
Posted by kysersozey, Sun Feb-26-12 04:12 PM
2667748, It's his weakest output so far, but still has some joints
Posted by IslaSoul, Mon Feb-27-12 06:20 AM

I didn't expect greatness,
and I think Kid Cudi can craft good songs.

Some standout tracks on this,
more specifically "Love Hard", "Teleport 2 Me, Jamie" & "The Dream Time Machine"

a horrible cover "Where did you sleep last night"

The rest of the album sounds like filler, but might hit me after more listening...not that I will keep this in constant rotation,
might mix the best of this with MOTM II's best moments.
2667767, Wow....pretty fuckin bad. Why is this called a rock album?
Posted by Admbmb, Mon Feb-27-12 08:38 AM
Sounds more electro...though there's two songs with a guitar on it (over an electro beat). No live drums = no rock. Really, really bad though. He sounds like a slowed down version of the Everclear dude. I'm not even a Cudi hater, this is just really bad with cheesy stock synths and off-key singing with excessive reverb all over.
2667791, PSA: It's not a rock album, it's slightly rock influenced
Posted by IslaSoul, Mon Feb-27-12 09:41 AM
same as rebirth
2667797, Rebirth was a rock album though. A shitty one, but pretty much a rock album
Posted by BigReg, Mon Feb-27-12 09:59 AM
You could argue that New Danger wasn't (and id agree).

Rebirth? Absolutely.
2667834, I respectfully disagree, rebirth at the most is a rap/rock hybrid
Posted by IslaSoul, Mon Feb-27-12 11:45 AM

in the vein that Walk This Way was
only Wayne didn't really succeed at it
We can argue in circles about what rock is or isn't,
but Rebirth to me, is definitely not.

I do agree with the New Danger not being a rock album,
it was rock influenced though,
and did a better job then WZRD, although it's almost apples and oranges.
2667850, I agree. Live rock drums and guitars.
Posted by Admbmb, Mon Feb-27-12 12:27 PM
2667803, Fair enough. I called it that just because that's what it's been billed as

2668647, I REALLY like this shit
Posted by cbk, Wed Feb-29-12 12:53 AM
Pretty much what I expected from Cudi. It's a progression from the MOTMs. More confident in his skin. And voice. Expanding the sound a little. Yeah it loOks a little naive posing with the guitars and all that. Billing it as his "rock album" or "rock influenced." but who cares. I'm singing all off key right along with him on this shit.

Not mad at this album at all.
2668706, Cudi's mad that Universal only shipped 50k copies of WZRD (swipe)
Posted by MME, Wed Feb-29-12 09:01 AM
When Kid Cudi gets mad, he lets the world know it. The man on the moon blew a fuse when he found out Universal only shipped 50,000 copies of his rock debut, WZRD. Feeling the need top channel his rage in a public way, Cudders aired out his label on Twitter. Read what he said below:
Ok so just a heads up, my weak ass label only shipped 55k physicals cuz they treated this like some indie side project tax right off. So i apologize on behalf of my weak ass major label. And I apologize for the lack of promo, again, my weak ass major label. They tried to rush me thru this so i can just give em another MOTM, but guess what? Fuck that, next album is When Kid Cudi is mad, he lets the world know it. The man on the moon blew a fuse over Universal under-shipping copies of his rock debut, WZRD. The albums was released yesterday but Cudders found out only 55,000 physical units were sent to stores. Read what he posted on twitter about the release:

WZRD. MOTM3 on hold til 2014. who mad??? not me and @DotDaGenius. So its def gonna be tough to find one in the stores guys, I’m sorry about that. I gotta go out and find one too, becuz my weak ass label never even gave us a copy of our own album. FAIL!!! Im lettin Universal Republic have it, fuck it. What they gon’ do, spank me?? hahahaha. AND Teleport 2 Me, Jamie aint on the radio!!!! like helloooooooooo????? HIT HIT HIT!!!
