2666213, i like it. it's been on repeat Posted by Sunny D, Thu Feb-23-12 12:50 AM
haven't stopped listening to "his pain" since it was released. have to let the other songs sink in, but it's definitely getting rotation.
|
2667302, yes! his pain is the truth. cant stop listening to it. Posted by MzOnyxVI, Sat Feb-25-12 03:22 PM
Really hope bj does well.
|
2666382, it was taken down cause track 11 doesn't play Posted by Nodima, Thu Feb-23-12 12:07 PM
and some people didn't get their track 2.
seems like it's getting extremely positive impressions across the web from the early birds though.

2666405, BJ is an incredible song writer/arranger Posted by Delajoo, Thu Feb-23-12 12:39 PM
as well as pretty damn good vocalist.
It was just a matter of time to where he got a cohesive, well produced project out, im so glad he took his time on this one (been waiting on PN&L for like 2 years since I first heard The New Beginning mixtape).
Cats like Frank, BJ, and Janelle are driving R&B, its good times errbody

this morning. dope. the bj def stands for bilal jr in my book (and you can hear the d'angelo influence too) but his song writing is definitely HIM and i dig it alot. wasn't feeling his mixtape that much so i was pleasantly surprised

2667513, cool, so I'm not alone Posted by astralblak, Sun Feb-26-12 11:53 AM

2667668, homeboy handshake + one-hand hug combo Posted by jimaveli, Sun Feb-26-12 09:37 PM
>This shit goes.
I bought this today. I love taking chances on supporting cats just to see if I stumble across some goodness. If I don't dig it, I bite my tongue and shake a fist at whoever 'put me on' to it. and then there's good stuff like this.
If I had to hate, some of the songs are guilty of sounding unfinished (like they stop one verse in or without telling a full story), but BJ is like a less squirrelly Bilal with the occasional turn into delivering lines like D'Angelo WITHOUT THE MUMBLING. Maybe a little Hollister too.
I like his delivery and his writing. And yes..some of these songs just 'sound good' plain and simple..even if the world isn't set ablaze, it is fly music.
I will certainly look into whatever else he had out already and look for future stuff. He's earned that fo sho. And I've brought him up to 2 folks already. Between working, watching Breaking Bad (I'm on ep 3 of Season 2..cray!), and trying to get ready for the office gig tomorrow, this has been on at the desk and in the ride all day.

2667677, yeah, other side is my shit Posted by Sunny D, Sun Feb-26-12 10:50 PM
very strong album. i don't know why i don't see more people talking about it. he doesn't seem to be getting that frank ocean, weeknd type buzz.
|
2667679, which is interesting because he's been floating around for a WHILE Posted by Nodima, Sun Feb-26-12 10:57 PM
Schoolboy Q, CunninLynguists, Ab-Soul, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Freddie Gibbs, Dom Kennedy, Pac Div and David Banner just to name a few have hooks or verses from the guy.
Promotion is probably MAD light on this album, though, because I had NO IDEA what this thread title was about until it got a couple posts deep.

2676623, freeessshhh Posted by oak, Thu Mar-22-12 04:30 AM
its great how its NOT influenced by whats hot now. it does feel unfinished and a little like a mixtape, however, this is not a bad thing. the whole vibe of the album, something i can listen to whatever mood im in. the world is a ghetto is on constant repeat, i love hearing those little samples drop in and out.

2689434, What do you have against good sense? Posted by Otis Oliver Ocean, Mon Apr-23-12 06:21 AM
I already googled the mothafucka so you wasted 3 minutes of your nonvaluable time dedicating it to me with a link I didn't need. Thank you for thinking of me though.
Now continuing........
Mentioning the artist's name is good pub for the artist. I shouldn't have to google the artist on a music discussion board because people want to be cryptic and feel like they're part of some exclusive club. Say who the artist is and provide links to effectively turn folks on to it. Everbody who sign on ain't got time to be googling everything in every post they come across. Now gone somewhere boy.

>niggas trying to be cute for no reason
Exactly
|
2689592, so basically, you're fuckin lazy... Posted by Crash85, Mon Apr-23-12 02:35 PM
because you had time to create an alias, but googling apparently takes too long for you...
It's not the Lesson's responsibility (or any message board) to blow up an artist... There are people who get paid to do that... Most people in this post knew who the artist was based off the album title... If an artist wants to get promoted on OKP, he should pay ?uest some bucks and get banner put up...

2689643, Hey man my sincere apologies. Posted by Otis Oliver Ocean, Mon Apr-23-12 04:25 PM
I mean here I am arguing with you and I didn't realize you struggle so hard with reading comprehension. I feel like a bully now. My bad.
|
2689699, RE: Hey man my sincere apologies. Posted by Crash85, Mon Apr-23-12 06:58 PM
doing something simple and then complaining about it makes you lazy in my book... I'm sorry you can't comprehend that...

2690468, No, he's right Posted by dalecooper, Wed Apr-25-12 08:57 AM
It's being cute and insidery for no reason. Just name the damn artist. Some of us don't know who is being discussed and don't want to open another tab to go Googling just to figure it out.

2689664, Solid work Posted by 13Rose, Mon Apr-23-12 05:06 PM
I'm a fan.
|
2689700, I feel the way about this some people felt about nostalgia, ultra Posted by Nodima, Mon Apr-23-12 07:08 PM
it's definitely guided by a similar vein of weirdness/abstract/structure lacking vibe, but not as much as N,U. was and the fact that it's all original instead of some hellaciously boring rewrites helps a lot. I could do without the song that's mostly samples but the rest of it is really good, sometimes great. R&B cats take note.
|
2690436, Im about there too Posted by mrshow, Wed Apr-25-12 03:16 AM
Frank might be a better songwriter but the missteps on NU are cringe-worthy.
|
2689770, Bought it, and yep it's pretty good. He has MAJOR potential Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Mon Apr-23-12 10:22 PM
A few songs on the album drag a liiil bit, but yea, with some polish he could be a Top 3 R&B cat in the game. Literally NONE of his shit has that over the top trendy feel like most R&B I hear.
|
2723046, yeah i smoke uhlutta weed, i drink a lot of hennessy Posted by astralblak, Mon Jul-23-12 01:37 PM
it popped up on the ipod randomly this weekend and i revisited the whole album, and it's snuk into my top 10 of the year.
this is the best of the album IMO (and how i sequenced it):
Fly Girl Get'em* Good Luv'n - can't believe i aint dig this at first White Picket Fence Interlude Goof Love - or this Sex is the Best Breakfast* The OtherSide* I Want You Back Hood Stories Vol. I His Pain* Kin Kong*
*are easily some of my favorite songs of the year
for HIS content and style (and with the MAJORITY of R&B albums) 10-12 songs are all that's necessary. as of right now i do believe it's better than channel ORANGE and wish this post had more replies. his voice is fantastic and he phrases his words/lyrics very well. the pen game could use some work and some of the snippets/interludes are unnecessary. Overall though, this is a very solid release
