their vbr ones hav always sounded a bit off to me

et al being Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, and Stuart Duncan. It's really enjoyable while still being a bit up its own arse... a good combination of the two, actually. The musicianship is of course absolutely insane, phenomenal throughout, and the compositions are intentionally complex, moving in sections as though each tune were a suite; in some ways it reminds me of a New Acoustic version of prog. Highlight for me though is definitely the first vocal track, featuring Aoife O'Donovan from Crooked Still... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=F-BkhEF1d5U = AMAZING. Probably no coincidence that my favorite track is also the closest to old-timey that the album gets.


Old music:

Jesse Fuller - Frisco Bound, an old Arhoolie compilation of stuff recorded in 1955 and 1962. I'd never really dug into his stuff before, and since he wasn't really part of the '60s scene or the '20s/'30s he tends to get overlooked in discussion. Well worth it, lots of fine blues-related material and Fuller's presentation is always pleasantly idiosyncratic. Still the compilation is missing two of his best-known songs - San Francisco Bay Blues, and Monkey & the Engineer. No problem, though, as this is all good.

Doc Watson - The Vanguard Years (4 CD box) - Doc's first 4 albums; while he's often celebrated as an old-time or bluegrass virtuoso, the reason he's a virtuoso is because of his wide appetite and influence. I'll have to dig up some of Doc's electric stuff though, because these are all in square Folk Revival mode (which is still excellent).

Doc Watson & Jean Ritchie - Live at Folk City - the legendary venue/nightclub that fueled the Greenwich Village scene. The album's not that great, but the best moments come from when they work together in surprising ways, like when Doc picks up the fiddle to accompany Jean's dulcimer. And as always form both of these performers, iconic versions of classic folk material.

Thile is apparently superman - i don't know when the guy takes a break.

That goat rodeo album is really great ... it's a bit "up its own" but I actually, well, appreciate that, lol...

They did a streaming HD concert a few weeks ago but I missed it... :/

and i'm no expert

it seems like the punch bros recordings almost shift between a little more avant-garde/artsy and the more accessible stuff w/each release... their new one (i gave it a quick listen the other day) seems more accessible. If I remember right, the last one was much more "out there" ... their earliest outing (how to grow a woman from the ground) has some downright catchy stuff.

So yeah, everything's worth a listen. :)

Anyway... for me, the answer would be (as always) loads of vintage vinyl and I've recently gotten into the vintage cassette scene too.

I know I have bought some CDs recently too, but I can't quite remember what they were.

you mailed it to me 4 or 5 years ago... it's awesome but I never got around to digitizing it.

I recently gave away a bunch of tape (and some CD) boxsets... Just looking at those things took me back. It's funny how redolent of the 90s the very format of the box set is.

I should probably start collecting them. Or maybe just Tumblring them.

Yeah, the only other stuff I've got is the 70's stuff, and I like it a lot. But that earlier self-titled album is just excellent. His guitar playing is just outstanding.

RE: The Pentangle
Yeah, as I pointed out in my write-up, it's a 90% reunion, so I have a hard time thinking that that group of musicians would put out something lesser. After reading up more on the later releases, it seems less of the original band was involved with later releases and Jacqui ended up doing "Jacqui McShee's Pentangle" which screams of poor decisions on her part if you ask me. Open the Door is excellent though. The songs are just eyebrow-raising good, if you ask me.

RE: Bert
I think I mostly like that album because, like with Tom Rush, Bert's guitar playing is fantastic. The songs are a pretty mixed bag —traditionals, instrumentals and more singer/songwriter-leaning stuff all thrown together— but the playing and feeling is pretty passionate.

RE: Aztec Two-Step
Songs, songs, songs! Their style is not that unique (think Simon and Garfunkle's first album with a bit of CSNY), but the songs are just excellent. They definitely have a folky aspect to their music, but they are more on the pop side of things. I have one other album of theirs and it's a lot more produced and the songs aren't nearly as good.

Milt's CTI albums are really underrated. Sure they all take that stock Creed Taylor approach in that there's not many original tunes and all of the songs have the big, lush orchestrations and arrangements. But it works for Milt. Goodbye has always been favorite of his CTI records, but Olinga is probably the funkiest.

since my cassette for sheila e's third album was muffled and defective....I went back to the thrift store to get it on lp. I listened it on valentines day morning and I was blown away especially since I havent heard it in its entirety a long time. the intro to Hon E man had me in a trance and hold me is a very nice retro love song.

Damu Ridas - self-titled. It was like $2, and I saw it had some Tweedy Bird Loc production on it when I looked it up on my phone, so I had to cop it. Plus I'm a sucker for novelty cases (guess what color it is).
J-Live - All of the Above. I never got this when it came out for whatever reason...it was actually a new copy labeled as used for $3.99. Not bad.
The Coup - Party Music. Decent album, especially for $3.
Ninja Tune USA - If Ya Can't Stand Da Beatz, Git Outta Da Kitchen. Double CD compilation of Ninja Tune shit from 96. Well worth the price I paid.

Action Bronson & Statik Selektah - Well Done. The name of the album is an apt description of how I feel about it.
Willie Evans Jr. - Introducin'. I played the shit out of this on Spotify for a few months, so I felt like I had to buy the CD.
Exile - 4TRK Mind. Same deal with this album.
Cool Kids - When Fish Ride Bicycles. A few excellent songs and a few duds. Only slightly disappointed with this.
Killer Mike - Big Beast (digital single). My most played song of the year already. Can't fucking wait for that album.

and I love both The Best Part and Then What Happened. The lyrics are excellent as they are with all his albums (I think he keeps getting better with age), but the production is way better than I expected it to be. The four track stretch between the first and second interludes is just excellent. It does kind of run long, but I can't name a track that I would take off...it's a fun album to listen to.

At the time, it just solidified for me that he was the best doing it.

Now that I look back at it, I tend to think of it as one of the best-produced albums of the early 2000's. From 'Nights Like This' through the end of the album, the sequencing is really good too.

I don't think he's been able to top it.

I would say, personally, Tones Of Town (their 2nd) is best.

Measure (their 3rd) is a great follow-up, though I view the 1st 10 tracks as the album proper, and the rest as a B-sides comp of sorts. Some good songs in there, put some experiments that don't do it for me. But those first 10 are gold.

I really like the new one, but it is certainly a return to a more fractured style that reminds me of the 1st and 2nd albums. Maybe more so than those.

1st album's good too, but I find it a bit lacking in the recording/mastering side of things.


Lastly, their 2 solo projects (School Of Language & The Week That Was) are great as well.

I recently discovered St. Vincent great stuff. How is Actor? I have the first album and the most recent.

Big Urban is okay, but the best two tracks were free releases from the label I already had. Still, he's an interesting emcee with a very low key delivery, which is what I've been drawn too lately. But some of the instrumentals sound a little too close to generic indie rock for me.

Gonjasufi rounded out the rest of my valentine's iTunes gift card purchase. Good stuff. Probably more reigned in then his Kufi and a Killer album, but less misteps, too, IMO. Some weird cool singing over some good left field beats. Wouldn't mind if he rapped more, I think he's good enough at it to mix it up a bit.

EMV would be the cynical, market-tested to be fool-proof industry album if every 14 year old girl had my tastes in music. Just everything I'm digging right now in music. Field recordings, beats, lo fi samples, right on the line between head nodding and noise. All it's missing is a low-key MC.

On the free front, my favorite thing I've downloaded recently was Matthewdavid's mix for XLR8R. I think it's from last year, but it's a really good mix. Even though it includes stuff by Michael Jackson, Milli Vanilli, Jodeci and even Shai, in addition to the beat scene stuff, the way he mixes everything with a murky, lo-fi cassette aesthetic makes it sound super cohesive. It's a mix that succeeds in making every single song sound like a Matthewdavid song, which is great if you like Matthewdavid.

Tuneless, noisy, synthetic sounding stuff for the most part.

Don't think I've ever seen someone so unenthusiastic about stuff they "like."

Dope. Yeah the last 2 years I've been on a big 70s
spiritual kick. Lot's of small and medium label
releases.
Jazz is truly a genre that is never-ending. No matter
how deep i think i've gone down i still seem to be
at the beginning of the rabbit hole.
There's tons of Japanese stuff out there. I'm just
scraping the surface right now. Brazil, France, Korea,
lots of countries had and still have thriving music scenes.

Jazz Raga is a fun album. We had a nabe party the other night
with some friends and i threw that jazz raga album on and
it fit right with the mood. it's unique sounding album and
probably one of his i'd file (maybe 'dreams' or 'spellbinder')
but some songs hit like dorothy ashby-lite.

and every time I went to the 'big city' (Morioka, sometimes a day trip to Hachinohe while visiting friends on the coast, Sendai once in a while, or Tokyo when I was lucky/traveling home) I'd make sure to hit the used CD stores (vinyl was impractical for a # of reasons). Loved seeing 'chuukoo CD' on a window and stopping in randomly.

This was in the late '90s,and there was a ton of stuff up my alley going on in Japanese music, so given the price differential (I'm assuming a used CD there still costs as much as a new CD here? Maybe the .mp3 has changed that a bit, but I haven't seen any fluctuation in import prices) I was pretty much only looking for Japanese stuff I knew I wouldn't be able to find when I got home.

traveling around there, miyagi: higashi-matsushima & sendai, and
also rolled over to yamagata. Tohoku is a very proud, historical
area with a deep tradition. Good people up there.

Yeah, I'm a record guy, but I totally understand why people switch
to the compactness of CDs (even more so in Japan where lack of
space is a huge issue). I'm locked in over here for atleast the
foreseeable future and more likely forever, so for me vinyl was it.

CD prices have come down quite a bit since I've been here. Even Japanese stuff. Yeah Chuukou is where its at. Disk Union and Coconuts
are both amazing in Tokyo. They have the best overall selection
and price combination. I use amazon for new stuff now and again,
and the prices aren't much different from the states now. I'm
constantly seeing lots of pretty amazing CD titles in the 100-300 yen
boxes at disk union (even used japanese cds).

Glad you got up there... the whole area is so little regarded there, culturally or even geographically, and the scenery can certainly compete with anywhere else in the country. I remember reading a Japan Times article calling Morioka a small backwater... it had 350,000 people! I got MAD. Maybe perspective has changed a bit since last year. Still breaks my heart.

I did a post on local music & dance traditions from Tohoku after the tsunami last year - oni kenbai, shishi odori, sansa, taue odori, kagura, stuff like that. I was also involved in the taiko scene up there and it's a lasting regret that our group's supplier refused to take me on as apprentice after my JET term expired.

I have a nice vinyl collection, and I lived in a big house (space is at less of a premium in the sticks), but being on JET I was there for three years, lugging vinyl home wasn't going to be an option.

I used to shop at I think it was Phalanx? when I was in Tokyo. They had a few stores and a boutique punk label that was putting out lots of the ska I was digging.

Ha, I missed you by a good bit. College 92-93 in Osaka-fu, then on JET in Iwate from 95-98. Hard to believe I've been home so long - it still feels so immediate to me. I would gladly have stayed on, but I'm not a city person and felt like I would have had to move somewhere bigger to get a long-term kinda job.

Musically, the stuff I went for (and still love) tends to stick to the roots-rock or world-rock formula that had a resurgence of sorts there in the early/mid 90s, but was never really mainstream except for 'shima uta'... I have a few jazz albums as well, and still have a very soft spot for the Japanese ska scene from that time as well. Used to post about that stuff all the time back in my early days on here.

Esp. since Japan already has the entire city of Kyoto designated, and there are plenty of other deserving places there.

Looking on the website, I'm seeing the Shirakami range, which is just west of where I lived (I was in a valley in the Oou)... I didn't get to hike there since there was a ton of great hiking closer to home.

Minor brush with fame: after my JET tenure ended, I hitched around Hosnhu for a month or so, and once got a lift with a songwriter who'd just gotten his first big break - he'd written UA's debut single.

Both are good, but that Ellington record is especially good - a wonderful version of Solitude that leads right into Ibrahim's own "Blues for a Hip King" and then back again...

Seven That Spells, "Future Retro Spasm." Not ashamed to admit I found out about these guys due to a thread on another forum titled something like, "Are there any good albums with naked chicks on the cover?" This is indeed good - psych/space rock freakout stuff with a jazz influence. Reminds me at different times of Mahavishnu Orchestra and NRG Ensemble, but maybe less intellectual than either of those.

Coven, "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls." This a weird little curio that once I found about it, I just had to have a copy. Basically imagine Jefferson Airplane, in 1969, deciding to make a soundtrack for a Hammer horror movie - one of the Satanic ones adapted from a Dennis Wheatley book (e.g. "The Devil Rides Out"). Except it's not a soundtrack, it's just an album. About devil worship. With their 16 year old frontwoman naked, stretched out on an altar, on the back of the LP jacket. ...Yes, this got banned and is pretty hard to find nowadays.

George Clinton, "Hey Man... Smell My Finger." Slept on this for far too long. This is actually one of the best Clinton solo albums, I think, now that I've given it a real listen. It's no "Computer Games" but then again, what is? For its era, a solid release.

Black Sabbath, "Black Sabbath." One of those albums I should have owned long ago, but I just knew most of it and felt like I didn't need it. Saw it in my local shop for $7 and decided I needed it finally.

Danny Brown, "XXX." I kept reading about him here and after a spell of not hearing any good new hip hop, I checked him out. Liked what I heard, bought the CD. Definitely been spinning this off and on.

Not too much lately. I did buy a death metal 7" split between two underground bands I really like (Undergang and Funebrarum). Otherwise I've slowed my vinyl consumption... turntables are a pain.

Homeboy Sandman, "Subject: Matter." I think this might be his best stuff yet. The label move might be a good one for him; he's a great rapper but his biggest issue so far has been weird/bad/annoying beats on too many of his songs.

Real Estate, "Days." I know they're one of the trendy indie bands and I know I'm a day late on them; and I also know that a lot of people have been critical of them for not really writing songs. But fuck it on all counts. I just like the vibe they give off. This is a really pleasant listen - a little slice of summer in February.

Striking that the song titles include both 'Black Sabbath' and 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.' And of course a member named Oz Osbourne.

That gatefold pic is HILARIOUS, too... at least the guys all look like they're having a good time.

...not too great IMO even if I have friends who swear by it. It's a bit similar to Black Widow in that it's a satanic band who's music is actually pretty bland and standard for the time. It's funny but understandable that Black Sabbath-who of course wasn't satanist but got the inverted cross placed in their gatefold without their knowledge or co-sign-attracted the most coverage because their music must have hit like a ton of bricks then; the real satanists meanwhile sounded more like fairies, LOL!

The supposedly real ritual-song on the albums is amusing though... Anyway, I don't think it's BAD but the whole story behind it-and the cover-makes it one of those records that's more fun to own than to listen to IMO...

I enjoyed listening to it but it's very much Jefferson Airplane-lite. A few good songs, the rest is just OK. It's very hippie-dippy. I'm happy to own it though - it falls right in the middle of the intersection of a lot of my interests.

Sort of tangentially, this kind of thing is undergoing a serious revival right now and some of the records that have come out of it are a lot better than this one. Sabbath Assembly "Restored to One" for example, and all The Devil's Blood stuff.

so i picked one up as well (not the 2011 reissue).

. . .and I haven't really even thought of discussing them on my blog yet, but I have wanted to say something.

The first is Andrew Bird's Break it Yourself. I got the super sweet deluxe edition and man, it is gorgeous. Heavy double vinyl, buncha artsy fartsy packaging, hand numbered — beautiful. Haven't watched the DVD yet, but the album is just incredible. I can't say right now where it stands in the bigger picture of his catalogue, but it feels like he is more unique than ever on this album. The subtle creativity is what's really great about it. Just the atmospheres that he creates in his songs are something unfamiliar and fresh, but masked behind the guise of a sort of roots rock presentation. His lyrics are a little less dense this time and the songs are all the better for it. Really into it. Been playing it a lot.

The other is Poor Moon's Illusion EP. This is Christian (bass) and Casey (keyboards) from Fleet Foxes. Sub Pop was giving it away on digital for about a day or two. Not sure why it's gone now (they're back to offering the 'People In Her Mind' digital single for free; go here: http://www.subpop.com/artists/poor_moon — requires an email address), but I'll still be buying the vinyl when it comes out. I am glad that I was able to get it, because now I will have a reference point when I go see them in a couple weeks. Anyway, it's really good, but short! It has a very Buffalo Springfield, late 60's roots rock sound to it that I of course love. It does exactly what an EP is supposed to do: present a snapshot of a band doing its strengths in as little time as possible. And that's what's great about it: only at sixteen minutes short, it feels very cohesive and creates a wonderfully eerie atmosphere. I guess it will inevitably invite comparisons to Fleet Foxes and while there are some harmonies about, its really a much more concise overall presentation (but I will admit that there are shades of similarities). Tuneful and moody, with a great layered approach (especially on 'Anyplace' and 'People In Her Mind') and book-ended by two sparse acoustic numbers, creating a really solid listen. I was excited as hell after just hearing 'People In Her Mind' a month ago, but now I'm just kind of shocked at how good this thing actually is.
