I'm not even gonna be there, but even if he just stepped on stage and said a few words, I'd be happy.
2662991, * cough cough cough *

2663003, Said something?? Sheeeeeeeeeeit...
Posted by revolution75, Thu Feb-16-12 01:23 PM

But speaking? Whoa!!
Playing?? Double whoa!!
First a hangout with the girls at the treehouse a few months ago and this?
How much is a flight to mpls? lol!!
2663019, Nice...But if no little Purple dude, who'd do most of the singing?
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Thu Feb-16-12 01:32 PM
Split between Mark and Dez?

And Bobby has that sheisty mob lawyer/car salesman look.
2663022, (St.) Paul Petersen.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-16-12 01:34 PM
LOL

j/k

Wendy sang lead at the last Revolution show, i think. or she sang most of the leads.
2663028, Wendy, St. Paul and that cat from Mazarati right?
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 01:39 PM
sidenote: heard Mazarati and Sheila E cover America during the Parade era and two things...

they sounded exactly like the record - odd
he sounded exactly like P on the record - doublely odd.

Oh and he also look like a cross between Wanda and james Brown.

Triply odd.

2663032, LOL

i don't recall all the details about the last Rev show. i defer to your recount.
2663051, a musclely James Brown at that.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 02:01 PM
who talked like he was Prince and somehow adopted all his mannerisms.

And wore pink lipstick.

Jesus.

Mohammed.

Iron man.

2663071, sounds like you're talking about Sir Casey Terry, LMAO
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Feb-16-12 02:45 PM
2663074, hahaha.. 'sir'.. exactly. One part singer/two parts Runningback
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 02:51 PM
2663691, Sounds like he talkin about Sir Casey Terry Tate, Minneapolis Linebacker
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Feb-17-12 08:09 PM
.
2663031, Lol. Please no....I HATED The Family. lol
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Thu Feb-16-12 01:44 PM
2663034, Prince's demos w/guide vox >>>> Family releases w/Paul vox.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-16-12 01:45 PM
totally.
2663043, Funny thing is, some of his solo stuffin the 90s was listenable...
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Thu Feb-16-12 01:51 PM
...once he stepped away from the Prince sounds. There were still traces, but it was more scaled down.

I should say mid 90s...
2663047, Yep and the early 90's stuff has some real gems on it...
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 01:58 PM
The Symbol album
Diamonds and Pearls
Chaos and Disorder

2663058, The Family's version of "Screams Of Passion" >>>> Prince's studio demo
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 02:17 PM
I wish I still had P's version (not the rehearsal... the guide vocal)

but yeah... St. Paul & Susannah won that one.
2663066, nah son. Can't agree. The difference if I recall was no Claire Fischer
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 02:37 PM
on the demo version - the song was stripped down.

If I recall or at least the version I have.

Totally changes the makeup and emotion of the song.
2663076, so you prefer Prince's solo
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 02:52 PM
falsetto version over the same backing track that the Family used...

oooookay.
2663078, Um no. The original foundational track was there but no Claire Fischer
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 02:57 PM
that immediately changes the tone as the version with the Family is fuller cause of Claire Fischers orchestral string arrangement.

So the P version is unfair to compare cause it's just the rhthym section and some keys with his vocals.

When you read about the recording of the song with St. paul and how it took him hours and hours and hours just to get a full sentence down right - it makes you look at the final alot differently.

They say that session was painful.
2663102, RE: Um no. The original foundational track was there but no Claire Fischer
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 03:30 PM
i was going solely on vocal performance.

not one of prince's best.
2663103, Ah - ya know it might be the version I have is different from yours too
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 03:32 PM
I have the rehearsal one but I was referencing the studio version with no Claire. I mean compare that to the album and yeah by far.

For the record I like the Family but prefer Prince's version cause of Mutiny. Sheer heat.
2663106, yeah i was referencing the studio version with no claire n/m
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 03:35 PM
2663112, That's what I thought - I gotta find the full vers and send it to you
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 03:38 PM
I think you must have the demo demo demo lol.

yeah that sounds like P woke up and yawned in the vocals.

There is also another number on there that didn't make the album... a instrumental that's so so cold.
2663079, yeah, I would agree
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Feb-16-12 03:01 PM
the rehearsal was cool (loved the tone of that electric grand he used)
but the guide vocal... eh.

there were a number of those I remember the -other- artist doing it better
2663116, that's the only one.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-16-12 03:46 PM
2663125, what's the only one?
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 04:01 PM
2663136, SoP
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-16-12 04:22 PM
2663158, i figured that
Posted by BrainChild, Thu Feb-16-12 04:57 PM
were you referring to the rehearsal being the only one or the guide vocal?
2663161, dunno.
Posted by SoWhat, Thu Feb-16-12 05:01 PM
i've only heard 1. it wasn't remarkable.
2663374, we have already identified at least two versions -
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 09:12 AM
the rehearsal
and the guide track.

there is also another version floating with Claire Fischer strings if I'm correct - I have to find this purple cassette that was passed on to me by my uncle. It should be fun going thru that.
2663456, ok
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Feb-17-12 11:26 AM
2663166, The family is touring now as FDeluxe in europe and they
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Thu Feb-16-12 05:13 PM
sound pretty good actually....better than I thought they would.
2663249, I actually thought they sounded better
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Feb-16-12 10:22 PM
in some ways when they weren't tracing Prince songs
granted, the Prince songs were more memorable

but still...they sounded more alive without the reins on them
2663252, That's the same way i felt about St. Paul's solo material.
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Thu Feb-16-12 10:41 PM
The stuff in which he didn't go full on Purple mode, was much better.
2663379, Considering most of us have never heard them at all - yea
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 09:15 AM
I mean the entire Family album was P.

Outside of that one concert at First Ave that I have on file - I don't recall them ever playing again. Could be wrong but that was pretty much my take on it.
2663506, that was Prince The Prospector trying to see if he could strike gold again
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Feb-17-12 12:51 PM
>Outside of that one concert at First Ave that I have on file -
>I don't recall them ever playing again. Could be wrong but
>that was pretty much my take on it.

I don't think they played after that, either. At least not in that config.
2663530, Right cause I think almost right after that St. Paul and Jellybean bounced
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 01:43 PM
so yeah that was about it.

Now why Jerome was there at all... well...
2663251, Yeah, I stumbled upon a few of their videos a few months ago...
Posted by Taye DiggumSmacks, Thu Feb-16-12 10:38 PM
I was amazed how much I was able to tolerate them now. Hearing the songs live definitely helped. I saw that Eric Leeds was with them too.

I read that Prince is sticking it to them namewise, like he did to The Time.......I mean the Original Seven *sigh*.
2663380, I'm sure it's more than just that - publishing, liscensing, WB...
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 09:16 AM
probably way more to consider than we realize.
2663378, don't they have an album an everything?
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 09:14 AM
2663072, between those two, it wouldn't be a bad idea
Posted by Dr Claw, Thu Feb-16-12 02:47 PM
I forgot that Brownmark could sing pretty well until I saw a video of his on Youtube not too long ago
2663073, They should have Andre Cymone do it.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Thu Feb-16-12 02:50 PM
2663127, The Revolution without Prince is like a Hot Fudge Sundae....
Posted by OldPro, Thu Feb-16-12 04:05 PM
without the ice cream

2663244, the same i say about the Family Stone without sly..
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu Feb-16-12 09:56 PM
it just ain't even the same
2663377, Oh definitely. It's like an odd celebration of their work. smh.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 09:14 AM
2663442, I felt the same way about the Commodores with Lionel
Posted by OldPro, Fri Feb-17-12 11:13 AM
Now in now way am I comparing them to the Revolution but once McClary left I was pretty much done.

2663446, Yep - there was such a full dynamic with Lionel involved - sidenote
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 11:17 AM
there was an incredible article about Lionel in GQ detailing how powerful he's regarded in Arab countries. There was even this piece about him having dinner on the Mediterranean and the head of the army for Syria was on one side of the restaurant and the head of the army for Israel was on the other. Apparently both parties eat there all the time (extremely wealthy folks only) both with their families and they were not allowed to interact or even glance at one another. When Lionel was there - both men ended up at his table and even exchanged fond words for one another although it was a bit uncomfortable. According to the writer of the article - that has never happened before and has never happened since.

2663455, Damn
Posted by OldPro, Fri Feb-17-12 11:26 AM
Maybe Obama needs to bring dude to the next peace talks lol

2663459, hahaha.. .right... they'd said one of the things
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 11:32 AM
that made him so attractive to that part of the world was the fact he always sung songs about love, peace and people coming together. That he never exploited women, he never dressed disrespectfully or had disrepectful back up dancers. He achieved succces in a honorable manner minsu any gimmicks. I rememeber thinking "Maxx is gonna love this".

I think he's Muslim now too cause in the article he mentioned "Allah's grace" but it could have been just a sign of respect for the culture. A really eye opening read. He'd been playing Arab countries quite a bit and his fandom there is as strong as ever.
2663503, Yep
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Feb-17-12 12:48 PM
>Now in now way am I comparing them to the Revolution but once
>McClary left I was pretty much done.

Thomas McClary is the 2nd most important Commodore
he farmed that sound out to other acts as producer (see: Michael Henderson, Klique). His solo album wasn't bad (actually it was quite good, in a George Duke-sort of way).

Losing Lionel was a crushing blow, losing Thomas put them on life support, losing Ronald (LaPread) was pulling the plug

When Clyde decided he was gonna be Miles Davis Jr. as front man and start singing over thin, so-beige-it-makes-Dancing-On-The-Ceiling-sound-like-Super-Freak pop music... that band was dead in the water. He needs some heavy music to sing over.
2663445, Would Prince heads be offended if Bilal sang wit the group?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Feb-17-12 11:16 AM

**********
Peace to the Gods.
2663450, Considering Bilal blew up by singing International Lover at that
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 11:19 AM
Prince concert in the early 00's... I wouldn't. That's a great call.

I remember clearly people leaving the spot saying "Who... the fuck.. was that???"
2663469, RE: Considering Bilal blew up by singing International Lover at that
Posted by eldealo, Fri Feb-17-12 11:54 AM
I've yet to hear this. Always wanted to check that out.
2663470, I was really fortunate enough to catch it - I don't know if audio exists
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-17-12 11:57 AM
it must. He REALLY went in that night - I think that's what scored him his deal.
2663698, That was the BK Academy Of Music 'Party At The End Of Time: 1999' right?
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Feb-17-12 08:21 PM
Bilal killed that shit there.

As did Corey Glover on 'Lady Cab Driver' with Vernon Reid sitting in on guitar.

Man I might have been on some good shit at that show but I swear that was one of my favorite concerts from a pure musical level I'd seen up to that point.

When was that, 2000?

I don't think First Born Second was even out yet.

I made a point of telling Kamal that in my most Okayplayeristically descriptive ways while he was likely waiting for the valet & trying to get the fuck outta dodge.

Off topic, but why does Larry Graham STILL have to be present at EVERYTHING that P. has going on?
