2659361, How much of THE UMMAH was really just DILLA? Posted by DaHumanA8stract, Wed Feb-08-12 01:28 PM
always wondered that....
|
2659364, the beats that sounded like he did them... Posted by Small Pro, Wed Feb-08-12 01:30 PM
...he did them. usually said so in the credits, also.
|
2659365, "mixed by" is who did the beat Posted by liveguy, Wed Feb-08-12 01:35 PM
if u have any album credits, it should be in there.
But you can tell when it's Jay Dee vs. Q-Tip.
Example...Busta Rhymes album "The Coming"
Ill Vibe - clearly Q-Tip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAlptXLnO9c Still Shining - clearly Dilla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8I1fwd9WWI Ill Vibe remix - clearly Dilla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCiBIXoefk8
most of that ummah shit was Dilla tho. lol

2659368, RE: How much of THE UMMAH was really just DILLA? Posted by jaybennie, Wed Feb-08-12 01:40 PM
Always thought the Ummah's direction was influenced from Tip hearing Dilla's tape...I guess inspiration
But there was always a clear difference between Tip and Dilla at the beginning, then dilla began to take more control of the collective's production as years went by.
|
2659396, all of it Posted by judono, Wed Feb-08-12 02:38 PM
The ummah was just one of those shadey '4080' ways fr qtip to make money off jay dee's beats and publishing
|
2659408, that's not quite right, lol Posted by mathmagic, Wed Feb-08-12 02:55 PM

2659432, ^^^^^LoKeyHalfWayProbablyALittlebitCorrectSomewhat^^^^^^ Posted by HIM, Wed Feb-08-12 03:33 PM
on the other hand, I could see Tip just wanting to link up with somebody dope and just make dope music. I mean, who wouldnt wanna join forces with Jay Dee??!?!?!?!?
I only agree with the "4080" thing if Tip was making more doe off of Dilla than Dilla was.
But there is really no way for us to know that.
|
2659447, and Dilla certainly did not do ALL of the UMMAH beats Posted by mathmagic, Wed Feb-08-12 03:57 PM

2659454, youtube the dilla interview Posted by judono, Wed Feb-08-12 04:04 PM
Where jay dee is talking about 'dudes used to come up to me asking me about these ummah beats and thought qtip produced them. And I was like, nah, I produced that shit'.
Those publishing deals will fuck u over every time.
|
2659457, So Q-Tip stopped making beats for Tribe when Dilla came aboard? Posted by Ishwip, Wed Feb-08-12 04:12 PM

. . .and "Produced by the UMMAH" in the credits is his.

BR&L had the ummah...but you had to look at the songwriting credits to see J.Yancey...indicator that dilla did the beat
not quite sure about the love movement...but i'm sure it's the same

2659453, until i hear otherwise, i'll just rely on the names in the credits Posted by cbk, Wed Feb-08-12 04:03 PM

2659644, RE: No "J. Yancey" in the credit. Posted by Austin, Wed Feb-08-12 11:22 PM
But even I will admit that that sounds like a Jay Dee beat.
So, I like I said, despite credits, nobody will ever know FOR SURE for sure.

It sounds just as much a Q-Tip beat as Dilla. In the same lane as one two shit beat that Tip did.

2659702, yeah, i dont think that clearly sounds like dilla Posted by AlBundy, Thu Feb-09-12 07:42 AM
versus qtip
one indicator of that period: jaydee had his closed off muffled rimshot snare, qtip was still rocking the bright crispy atomic snares
of course there was overlap (especially from jaydee), but that's a tell

2659847, tell tale sign for me is that on tips solo albums the beats were not close Posted by judono, Thu Feb-09-12 01:46 PM
Ok. Aside from amplified... none of qtips solo albums really had nice beats like that. And the programming isn't even in the same vein. Still love Q, Q is still an OG, but 85-90percent of them beats were dilla mane. The sound
|
2659855, wrong Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Thu Feb-09-12 02:03 PM
he did 5 on BRL, but the majority of TLM was him with Tip adding things to the beats and mixing them same with Amplified

2659906, EXACTLY!!! Posted by liveguy, Thu Feb-09-12 04:20 PM
It's like, come the fuck on, man!!
We all know that Dilla had a lot to do with Tip's career starting in '95...but uhhhh.....BD (Before Dilla) Tip was BEASTING on the boards!
Arguably the best three album run in hip hop history was produced by Q-Tip.
Every beat tip ever did outside of ATCQ were all retarded DOPE!
ALL! OF! THEM!
He found Dilla and saw the talent and brought him in the fold to keep the ATCQ sound fresh.....
But ask some people, Dilla produced all the Tribe albums and Tip had nothin' to do with nothin' other than taking credit for Dilla's beat.
Uh.....Tip INFLUENCED Dilla's sound in the first damn place!
The student surpassed the teacher (true), but don't sleep on the teacher.
|
2659938, see and on the low i think ali shaheed was producing a lot them joints Posted by judono, Thu Feb-09-12 06:03 PM
But either way. Of course the first 3 tribe records are undeniably dope on the production. Jay had a very distinct sound tho andit ain't hard to tell a jay dee beat onthe BRL and TLM

|
2659978, Yeah, it was one of my favorite albums that year Posted by Ishwip, Thu Feb-09-12 06:58 PM
And honestly, I was surprised at how much I liked it since I copped it more out of a life-time Tribe and Tip love. I figured it would be solid, but loved it off first listen. __ I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

2659951, damn Dilla love is birthing Q Tip hate? If Tip is so shady then Posted by Stadiq, Thu Feb-09-12 06:23 PM
Im no Tribe expert, but if Q Tip is so shady...why did he EVER share a mic?
Why try and put Phife on when he was clearly the star and superior emcee?
Why try and put Cons on?
Hell, why and put Dilla on??
Just seems like for being such a shady dude he has actually helped quite a few dudes out...and some of them their talentwas probably undeserving...
Next we gonna claim Dilla ghostwrote his rhymes? Or we gonna give Phife credit for that?
Cmon
Why did Dilla keep working with him??
Im a HUGE Dilla fan, but this is getting a little nuts. No need to bring down Tip in the process.
