in the set....

lots of cool things you could do with D' and Jesse on guitars with that song....could even flip it into a cold solo by Jesse at the end..

It's interesting because when I checked out Sade and John Legend opened for her....Legend did a version of I been watching you during his set...pretty cold too.... I got real geeked out when they started playing it and the wife is looking at me like "what is wrong with you" ...so I explain to her that it's a P-Funk song....anyways now D' is doing it during his live set...

someone honestly needs to like officially cover that song....
2657376, they did keep it in there

and D has a solo on it
Jesse had solos on other tracks
2657423, D'angelo should not have any kind of solo - seriously
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-03-12 12:21 AM
let Jess do his job and save this tour - not that the tour has failed cause it hasn't (hi haters haha)

But the truth is D is simply not proficient enough for a solo.

Learning guitar in public is not a good look considering ppl are saying 12 years to learn guitar but that's hardly true.

She's Always In My Hair has him listed as the guitarist and
wasn't he playing guitar in one of the Brown Sugar videos?

So that would imply about 17 years - definitely not his strong suit.

Anyway, I love Jj - bad motherfucker so having him is a great move.

Oh and I don't think that's Jess, Jess has been back for like one show and I don't think a vid from like 4=5 days ago would be him but I could be wrong.

Stick the keys and vocals D. No diss my brother - just a concerned friend as always.

not sure if you have heard Jesse's last album...but a song like I wanna get next to you... D' doing something like that would be playing to his strength vocally...

2657567, Not just heard it - spent some time talking to the man - he's great.
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-03-12 11:57 AM
I still to this day have an argument looming which Jess wouldn't answer

- that was you on the solo for 777-9311 wasn't it?

He laughs. Why? That was his phone number and prince wrote that song to fuck with him. They say he was pissed as hell in rehearsals.

I love Jessie Johnson.

I told him the guitar solo on Lady Cab Driver was the best Jessie Johnson impersonation I ever heard. He laughed lol

I dunno man, if D wants to grow as a guitarist - then he needs to put in the work. That said, I dunno about on record - in concert tho he should let the guitarists do their thing.
2657737, you ain't gotta lie to kick it.

cause I'd heard it was actually Jess' number - he didn't confirm one way or the other.

Man I wanted to pick that brother's brain.

No lie - and it wasn't a big deal (well probably only a big deal to The Time fans like myself) - they played the music festival in Baltimore (artscape) my girl lives there - my girl at the time was working the stage. WAsn't like they met with me man - they were talking to alot of folks before they hit the stage.

They were down to earth and cool - what's so big about that?

Good to hear......
2657503, Wasn't D'angelo playing guitar during the Brown Sugar vids
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-03-12 09:16 AM
and the Left and Right Vid?

Botton line, he's a solid supporting guitarist, not a lead guitarist. He's no Zappa, Prince, or Hazel for that matter - so that should be let go. Go with your strengths to finish this tour out right.

You know he'll be on Fallon soon enough so the last thing you want is another Lil Wayne guitar solo.

The funny part was all the - "and not that clean shit, that Lauryn Hill shit" - well folks, Lauryn is a much much better guitarist in 2000 than D is right now.

However - let that be, on keys and vocals - D is killing.

He looks good.

He sounds good.

I think he's gonna be alright. :)

I don't know why you're on this crusade. But simply saying he's not a good enough player to solo is enough. Unless I missed it, I've never seen lauryn play anything
more intricate than her unplugged stuff. D's playing outside of the solos was on par with that at least. Without the solos, he at least looks the part.
2657535, I'm not here to argue technicality but my statement was in response
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-03-12 10:56 AM
to a statement about Lauryn.

Lauryn's playing is actually superior - not slight against D, cause his strong suits lay elsewhere. When he's on keys and vocals he's a beast.

So stop monitoring only the negative comments - I have been fair about his work and I'm in support of his tour.

Does not mean I'm not using common sense - it shouldn't be either you hate D'angelo or you think he's God.

There are people like me who are normal about this and have noted both his strengths and flaws. Those people actually enjoy music and are not here to push myths or destroy the man. Thanks.

"He looks the part" - what?

2657581, lol
Posted by thebigfunk, Fri Feb-03-12 12:14 PM
Really though - we *barely* have enough to start drawing conclusions about D's abilities or non-abilities as a guitarist...

A few shows. A few youtube videos. These are dude's first shows in years, and the first shows where he's introducing himself as a guitarist...

Folks are acting like he sounds terrible - he doesn't. He doesn't sound great either, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for at least a while... especially because you can sort of see him trying to find his groove again (not just at the guitar, but in all of those clips... the *only* place he looks totally relaxed is at the piano for those medley clips)

Fans and critics alike need to stop trying to use these videos as a signed/sealed/delivered judgement on D's current talent. Let's let him settle in before we release the attack dogs...

2657591, Actually that's not true - I mean unless you cats simply don't listen

to guitarists stop selling wolf tickets. He's not comfortable or confident to solo - he doesn't have to be. I feel like it's everyone else saying shit that isn't true which is the problem.

It's like telling someone they can act (common) over and over despite reality - the person gets on stage crashes and burns and instead of being real - you wanna keep the fake shit alive.

Let's rejoice in what is real - his voice and his key playing.

The man has strong suit's why that isn't enough is just puzzling to me.

As a result of trying to 'sell' this image it was almost amatuer hour out there a few days ago and trust ppl in Europe were talking and things started dying down. Jj coming on board is exactly what he needed I'm happy cause this tour could be great.

Seriously.
2657693, for the record, I agree with your basic opinion. I just think the lengths

It's not gonna be he's either the greatest thing ever - or he's wack.

There is a healthy middle section and that's where I reside.

I have praised him in every post as well as commented on certain weaknesses.

Also, I didn't do it as much as others so I'm a little interested in why I'm getting singled out? lol...

I addressed it in my other response. The extreme opinions from extreme posters scream attention seeker to the point where I don't even read them. On BOTH sides. Your posts caught my attention because just seemed like an extreme amount of attention placed on something when the rest of your opinions were balanced. Best way to say it I think is Maxx's criticism is akin to a face full of pimples that major skin treatment couldn't even fix. Yours is a basically clear face with a big ass pimple on it. I'm clearisil lol

But it's all good. As much back and forth as this has brought on, I'm not that pressed about it and I know you're not. Just want to hear good music.

Not monitoring. I see comparisons to Lil Wayne and think the shit is kinda over the top.

I'm not sure where you feel this is how I think. I didn't think you hate D nor do I even remotely think he's God. I'm commenting on in what I feel is an overzealous amount of critique. Not a big deal.

>There are people like me who are normal about this and have

I get it. I've just seen you post the same thing several times. He's got a shitload of work to do as a guitar player and has no business doing solos. But the Lil Wayne reference? really? BTW the "looks the part" comment is in reference to the little wayne nonsense. I'm not giving him a pass. But that comparison is silly.

I would like to see Lauryn's playing though.
2657696, I hear you but this is why I compared them
Posted by Artful Dodger, Fri Feb-03-12 03:48 PM
having studio work on guitar is one thing

however taking the stage to play solo's that are being clowned on - that's lil wayne. I mean at the least someone in Wayne's camp should have said "fam you can't play". In d's case someone should have said "ayo, holding down the rhythm - that might work cause that's basic - but leave the solos alone".

Bottom line? He's not ready for solos. That's all. Considering all the D posts are now dead if anything I'm just trying to keep the spirit alive - but I'm going to be honest either way so.

Yes I have criticized his guitar playing - only cause they were pushing that as some amazing feature on Zappas level. Hardly.

However like i said - if they stay away from that which is nothing more than a gimmick - allow the man to be himself, stop trying to have one man satisfy all your parliament and Prince fantasies (not you, just in general) then shit should be cool.

however I have also praised a healthy amount of his show, his voice, and his keys playing.

It may be an issue of what one chooses to respond to - that's all.
2657717, ok well in this case I feel you

fair enough. I was responding to how you were presenting it. And honestly had it come from someone who was blatantly trolling it wouldn't have caught my attention. Everything about your critique I agreed with except the LH/LW stuff. I can accept the Lauryn stuff if shown proof. Based on what I've personally seen, I don't see either lighting the world on fire as guitar players. But the Lil wayne thing (which you've expanded on here) just seemed extra. I'm kinda mad at myself for even getting this deep into it because, while I'm happy dude is back and like the new stuff he's put together, I'm sounding like I'm excusing his play as a stan would.

I know I said on here before...D' has more vocal range than Jesse for sure..he's a better singer...but they have a very similar vocal delivery and phrasing.... Jesse being down with D' can be a real plus to D' overall....

i'm hoping he's open to doing both....

that makes it better for him too..keeps his name in the mix..because honestly verbal penetration was a really solid release by him..
2657584, Verbal Penetration was his best album by far

if you ask me... and I think that was the plan all along really..
another Time record - they were touring when we met - another JJ record and some high profile show ups.

I think however he'd expected both his album and the Time's album to sell more - I kept saying to him 'man ppl listening and following it's just a different time period man ppl don't buy like they used to'.

Jj is so dope man I really hope ppl finally give him his credit.

He's not the best guitarist I have ever seen - but I would maintain he IS definitely on Hazel's level.

i've always been a huge Jesse Johnson fan. however as this tour shows he wasn't cut out to be a solo act per se, but he had moments.

D'angelo is a solo act, however it feels like a chitlin circuit rivial and time warp central.

sorrry but 12 years later for this? and those new songs ain't much.

the band is alright but there is a lack of spark there and it just feels Nostelgia when it shouldn't really because D'angelo ain't old, but that sound and feel feels old.

you couldn't pay me to go see that show.

what next Sinbad and TOm Joyner Cabbage Patching and doing the Running man with D'angelo next? Man that is one tired predictable old feeling show IMO.
2657673, Give em time Jess been wit em one show. They gone get together.
