very slyish and a bit underwhelming. probably some outtake or work in progress.
2644738, a cute little cover

if this turns into something tangible (i.e. released), I imagine a scene not unlike the Mike Jack acquittal, with doves being released with every chorus)
2644768, haha... this dude said d'mumblo

True.. but still funky tho.. just don't ask me to recite a single stanza

It doesn't make any pronouncements about itself, stays in its subtle lane. The guitar line is nice and memorable, but yeah who knows what d'angelo himself will do with this.

hell, i'm not a d'angelo stan, but that swing?

shit, timing-wise, this is a pleasant curve in the world of music

hell, i know producers who would KILL to chop well enough to merge swings in this manner...

Posted by ReZilYaVic, Tue Jan-03-12 11:34 AM
when's the last time you heard 10/4 and 21/6 measures in this type of music? come think of it...which R&B (for lack of a better term) artist would have the balls to do so after being away for so long!
Besides an artist like Van Hunt or Bilal who takes chances like this?
I mean it would be easier to pull a Brown Sugar type song.
Tthe current marketplace does not want these kind of songs...they would rather have Brown Sugar allover cuz Voodoo was all about "How Does It Feel" and not about the album as a whole, at least not for the "general public"!
Like it or not but that album changed the game for ALOT of artists!

except "black hole sun, won't you come"

2644826, Very shitty cover.
Posted by BigReg, Mon Jan-02-12 12:10 AM
But as a demon it could be a good song since song structure wise it's quiet different. The chorus tho sucks: it's kinda wierd hearing a dark grunge-era song about the apocalypse get turned into karaoke rambling.

that they weren't supposed to hear in the first place.

y'all woulda chopped prince's head off if you'd heard his demo of "Kiss" in '86 before the song came out.

2644923, they ain't hearin'...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Mon Jan-02-12 01:28 PM
..listenin', but not hearin'

knowin' how much d likes to flesh out material. knowin' the process often evolves. knowin' he's never put out an album with filler.

nah

they'd rather focus on what they don't understand. they've been complainin' 'bout mumblin' all along, as if that's ever gonna change. never realizin' that its just as much a part of his soul as his falsetto. knowin' that he becomes an instrument.

not foreground, not background... the merge

perhaps they should listen again? except this time, they can listen with somethin' more than expectation.

and just listen

you don't have to know the words to a song to understand its power.

just listen...

Posted by bentagain, Tue Jan-03-12 10:33 AM
speaking for myself

to wait and wait and wait and wait for material, to where it is a decade out since his last album is frustrating as a fan of his music

and then compound that frustration with hearing a rough cut of some track where he sounds like he could have been doing this the whole time we got nothing

that's what has people butt hurt

he could have mumble his way through an album or two over the past decade, and this just proves it

2644866, ...
Posted by Crash Bandacoot, Mon Jan-02-12 10:20 AM
sounds like they were f*cking around and popped this out. not bad for someone who has been MIA for the last decade. sounds better than most of the stuff that's out here now and this is relatively old (2010)

2644912, this is just an outtake but dangelo isnt really the R&B vanguard
Posted by GumDrops, Mon Jan-02-12 12:19 PM
anymore is he? he seems to have just settled into his little niche. which is cool, but this sounds a bit dated/kravitzy even. the synth lines and vocals are interesting on this, but i expect something a bit more... wrongly i know, lol, but i do (my personal little fantasy is to hear dangelo do a cover of james blakes wilhems scream, mainly cos blake obv tracks his vocals like dangelo, and dangelo can actually sing, and id like to hear him do something outside his now pretty familiar comfort zone). its a cool little studio outtake though, and the ending vamp is good - i could prob hear this a good few more times. sounds like part of a live jam session.

btw, im sick of that same old roots drum sound. i dont want to hear those snares anymore.

edit - actually, fuck it, this is just a great groove, kravitzy crunching and same old rim shots aside

does take me back to around 1998 though
2644919, RE: D'Angelo - Black Hole Sun
Posted by akeldama, Mon Jan-02-12 12:58 PM
this track sounds pretty much like a voodoo outtake, because of that hard groove style, i agree with what some people said here previously, but i must admit that this high pitched voice is a no-no. that sounds like chipmunks voice. or did he want to sounds like prince in some of his works or what. d has a precious voice, and we all know that, so im hoping it is a demo (or is it that 97% made song still missing normal vocals? who knows)
also, cant wait for his shows! im sure he'll release a single before the warm up tour

Still...
I don't like it as much as the other covers mentioned above, but if this represents the general tone the album is going for I'm alright with it.

I, for one, think this track is pretty cool.

But...you can TOTALLY understand someone wanting to hear more than a cover after 10 years of, well, sporadic covers and guest appearances. Even though this wasn't supposed to be leaked, it sounds like it has a little more production involved than stuff like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" (which really does sound like nothing more than D and ?uest fucking around in the studio).

D'Angelo SHOULD care what fans think. He should really be thankful that he has a fanbase that still gives a shit.
2645033, Well then don't listen to anything D'angelo until you know it's official.

But you're sounding like a Jay Electronica stan right now.

"Take what you can get."

"You weren't supposed to hear it anyway."

"Just don't listen then."

In 2012, that all just sounds ridiculous. Especially for an artist who hasn't done jack shit for a decade. Everything is fair game for criticism after you take that long. I bet you were in all those posts for the Dre "Detox" leaks too, SMH.

That surely has nothing to do with his soon to come official release.

I mean just as desperate as it seems for some to act like this is the like the official return of D'angelo.... Its even more desperate..... And strange really it is to act all music critic about it.

Trust.... The shows are coming shortly.... The album is coming
Soon after..... There will be plenty of time for you to
Provide snark filled lesson-hate in that bitter contrarian manner
You've mastered over the years....

Patience.....D' and them will be getting funky live on stage
Very soon and you'll have plenty of opportunity
For said funkiness to go directly over your head again

Lolol

Taking 10 years just to sound like a funkier Lenny Kravitz is an insult to his fans, if anything. His "recent" output has been cool, but seriously....LOL at the thought of attacking D'Angelo FANS who give enough of a shit to comment about a "demo." I put "demo" in quotations because you can't exactly tell me that Voodoo was a bunch of fully-realized SONGS either. If you listen to stuff like "The Line" all the way through yet dismiss this shit as nothing but a mere "demo," then maybe you've overrated Voodoo as well.

And of course I love Voodoo.

But come on.
2645130, what makes you think D owes you anything?
Posted by AlBundy, Tue Jan-03-12 07:14 AM
because youre a fan of his music?
2645191, Hmmmm...can you show me where I said he "owed" me anything?
Posted by third_i_vision, Tue Jan-03-12 11:41 AM
Also, forgive me for assuming that this dude is still considered a MUSICIAN. You know....someone who puts out music.....regularly (that's a fucking stretch-and-a-half for D'Angelo).....for people to listen to and discuss.

A ten-year hiatus would be enough for almost anyone to dismiss this guy as a lazy/overrated bum who couldn't live up to expectations.

Yet we're sitting here almost 100 posts deep, talking about the music. I don't give a damn what D'Angelo "owes" me or any of his fans. I just think it's worth mentioning that people still care, and fuck anybody who says you can't criticize a "demo" from D'Angelo at this point.
2645234, this isn't an official release
Posted by Deluge, Tue Jan-03-12 01:46 PM
this isn't something you were supposed to hear
nor were we supposed to hear any of the other solo d'angelo stuff from the past few years

so yeah I don't think it's very fair to have such an outspoken opinion of where he is at musically right now based on that
2645123, Thing is: I didn't critique the track.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-03-12 05:01 AM
I critiqued the overreaction to the track by fans who are talking about how their minds are blown and are shouting down anybody who expresses anything different.
2645156, i suspect the D'Fenders up in here would have 0 to say if all of us
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Jan-03-12 10:30 AM
were heaping praise on this 'demo'. LOL i doubt they'd come in here and tell us all to reserve critique b/c this is 'only a demo'. but some of them would still put on their 'above it all'/'too cool for school' air and scoff at anyone bothering to listen to this months-old trifle.

>anybody who expresses anything different.

I don't see any of this that you are referring too..

I see people saying "I like it"

**shrug**

not sure how that's an overreaction..

nor do I see anyone being shouted down...

you're exagerating people's reaction to justify YOUR reaction.

That's what Lesson Hate is all about.
2645235, Of course you won't see it.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-03-12 01:46 PM
You have a reputation for seeing what you want to see and conveniently ignoring facts that invalidate your position... so why expect any of that to change now?
2645242, or you could just give an example to support what you're saying
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Tue Jan-03-12 02:02 PM
that's what most people do that actually desire what they are saying to be taken seriously.

honestly... a glance up this post sees a bunch of responses on some "I like it" or "this is cool" type of thing..

you exagerating what people are saying about this demo player.
2645249, LOL @ me being interested in impressing you or taking you seriously
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-03-12 02:10 PM
You really got me fucked up if you think I'm rolling like that in 2012, son.

If I were talking to an individual of sturdier intellectual or moral fiber than yourself (or if I actually gave a damn about this non-argument) then perhaps I would provide examples to illustrate my "point."

But there's really no need to do that... especially when it is CRYSTAL clear that you lied when you claimed to have read all the responses and seen no such reaction as I described.

*smh*
2645278, lol...I'll make it easy for you....

point out to me where I claimed to have read all the responses....
I said I looked at the posts.... not that I "read all the previous responses". I give a cursory glance at the responses and see a bunch of 3 word responses to this song, and ask YOU to point out where you see this "overreaction to the track" "people stating their minds are blown" and a "shouting down anyone with a different opinion"

I asked you to show me where you see that my nigga...lol... and once again you can't..

I prove my point that I've been saying on here for years.... You're a side-buster who comes in here exagerating what other people are saying about something they dig, and then attack that exageration.

that brings a level of "fiction" to musical conversations with you. Where people aren't really talking about the music or the subject at hand, or even debating their own personal views about issues... It turns into a platform for you to just exagerate and make shit up....

in 2012 you still doing that shit.....and I'm still calling you on it....

nigga you playing Rex Reed over a years old D'Angelo demo.....lol.

don't be mad at me....
2645296, 2 of those J*nus songs WERE better than most of Voodoo, though.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-03-12 03:15 PM
I don't know why you keep on bringing that up to discredit me, as if I have ever backed away from my statements.

J*nus had better melodies than most of the material on Voodoo.

The fact that J*nus is a crazy idiot doesn't have anything to do with the quality of his music. I'll give him props for that, regardless of how I feel about him as a person (or an online presence).

Just goes to show what a starfucker you are, though.

btw where did I "play Rex Reed" over the demo? I commented primarily on other people's reaction to the track... not on the track itself.

Once again shows what a liar you are. And I would say that you had a huge hard-on for the man KAP if your piss-colored pecker were so tiny.

*double-sprays Bitch-B-Gone*

I certainly don't give a fukk what you think really about anything... You been exagerating and making shit up on here for so long..it's funny to me to point that shit out.

Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Jan-03-12 03:37 PM
Which is why in a post featuring multiple posters explicitly pissing on the demo, you skipped every reply and jetted directly to mine... when I didn't even offer any kind of substantial opinion on the track itself beyond "I *kinda* liked it."

You're fucking obsessed and it creeps me the fuck out. So just... just stay away from me, you weirdo.

It's an interesting approach that could be realized into a great arrangement and it's actually good to hear D'Angelo's creative process. I'm confident the new album, whenever it drops won't disappoint. Good post.
2645142, as much as i wanna pull my dick out
Posted by revolution75, Tue Jan-03-12 09:10 AM
and piss on this
i just can't
for one, i know this is a demo and for that its not bad, mumbling and all (what up Claw)
its a work in progress, perhaps the way he was doing covers to get the vibe flowing during Voodoo..one can only speculate
second, even if if i thought it was crapola, im still going to support this brother
this demo (new or old) beats most released stuff by a black male artist of last year
Sure he"s wasted 10+ years of his career AND contributed to the fucked up state of black music as we know it in 2012
(those mofos HAD the chance to really change shit but FUCKED up)
But soul/funk is a dying genre and D just might be our last chance Johnson
This moist movement within the r&b community has to stop or at least get some balance
who's gonna take the weight??
better yet who's going to allow someone to take the weight??

Posted by NastySpice96, Tue Jan-03-12 08:40 PM
This kind of seems to make sense?

8 years old would mean that this song was recorded around the time of "really love".

and they have a similar feel.

I actually really like this track tho. very cool, very inventive, kind of serene.

I do not see it as representative of the new album whatsoever, given the 8 year gap. Using this to judge the new album is a profound stretch, lol.

Nonetheless... cool track! Glad we got to hear it.
2645469, it sounds like the bridge between "really love" and "1000 deaths"
Posted by howisya, Tue Jan-03-12 08:49 PM
i hope the rest of 'james river' gets leaked since the J album is supposed to be some mark ronson/john mayer/cee-lo bidness last i checked
2645494, i exhale deeply at this.
