2638041, 25 Songs Where Rappers Got Murdered On Their Own Sh*t (by yours truly)
Posted by DeePhunk, Fri Dec-09-11 11:01 PM
Today, Complex was kind enough to run a list I've been wanting to publish for a long time now. Let the debates begin.

http://www.complex.com/music/2011/12/25-songs-where-rappers-got-murdered-on-their-own-sht/
2638045, I'm not mad at the #1 choice
Posted by csuave03, Fri Dec-09-11 11:24 PM
Although I would have arranged it differently, this is one of the better lists that Complex has done
2638047, RE: Is there any other choice?

~Austin
2639481, I have a problem with that one
Posted by Boximus Crime, Wed Dec-14-11 07:37 PM
Akinyele took that song.
2638048, a couple of those verses aren't even good
Posted by Anonymous, Fri Dec-09-11 11:50 PM
and I'm sure you know which ones I'm talking about.
2638049, no one got murdered on most of these songs
Posted by justin_scott, Fri Dec-09-11 11:52 PM
a rapper having a better verse than you doesn't necessarily mean you got murdered. beanie siegel had a stand out verse, but everyone came dope on adrenaline. no one got murdered. eminem had a ridiculous flow, but let's not act like jay-z didn't have ridiculous lyrics on renegade too. getting murdered on your own shit is really when another rapper sounds good and you had a wack verse.

why would anyone say dr. dre got murdered on his own shit when he isn't a rapper and he introduced snoop on that track. plus, the beat is ill.

and nobody got murdered by busta on scenario. q tip, phife, and charlie brown all had dope verses that stand out too.
2638053, RE: Jeez, don't take the slang so seriously.
Posted by Austin, Sat Dec-10-11 12:09 AM
It's just jargon, mate.

>Nobody actually died.

2638065, I somewhat agree but they kinda had to pick songs that
Posted by csuave03, Sat Dec-10-11 12:59 AM
are popular because that is what their audience is familiar with. I personally wouldn't have included a couple of the tracks including that Rick Ross & Drake joint and the Kanye songs.

Furthermore, if Busta on Scenario wasn't on the list, I probably would have complained.
2638098, Orrrrrr we could use he phrase as coined
Posted by RaFromQueens, Sat Dec-10-11 06:02 AM
2638101, its fucking Complex dude
Posted by Amritsar, Sat Dec-10-11 07:55 AM
this is for the hipsters who LOVE rap oh so much
2638358, you probably could have left Scenario off your examples
Posted by Bombastic, Sun Dec-11-11 07:13 PM
>
>and nobody got murdered by busta on scenario. q tip, phife,
>and charlie brown all had dope verses that stand out too.

because that's pretty much the de facto example for standout/scene-stealing performance on a posse cut for two decades running.

To pretend anyone would cite Charlie Brown or Phife when talking about that song is just contrarianism at its worst.

for fear of getting "murdered", rap music is worse off. Don't love the concept.

2638793, lol i'll take this L
Posted by 15, Tue Dec-13-11 01:05 AM
its like we heard the verse at a friday jam session.
shit was about FIVE times longer than what you got...
like how can a mofo stretch a "and em" verse?
like...shit woulda been 7 mins.
we told him yo...32 bars yo nothing else.

dice actually closed the song with a whole nother verse. (cause his first line "beans pass the mac...") was like a baton jawn....

then me & rich was like "yo riq, change your verse, this pattern to paragraph jawn is cool, but beans flat footed predictable "& em" flow is the winner so you might wanna readjust it.

pride is a mofo.

he rewrote the jawn and made it MORE complex.

we was teasing riq and he was like "take this shit off the album then since yall dont fuck with my verse"

we was like its cool...but we just never dealt with this type of scenario before (i personally think "the lesson" with dice's verse ("i leave niggas missing in action like the dads in the projects") was my favorite riq ether.

dice took heed and was like "nah, im rolling with the flavor, and just do the flat foot jawn so it won't sound crazy after beans"

riq stood his ground and took the L like a man.

and i dont consider it an L so i mean it playful

Posted by makaveli, Sun Dec-11-11 04:09 PM
i thought it was the best verse i ever heard.
2638073, Where's "Making A Name For Ourselves" Or "Beasts From The East"
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Sat Dec-10-11 01:31 AM
Those two songs should've made that list, putting up remixes with multi-guest rappers should be omitted since the whole purpose is to have those rappers guest appear and rip it better anyways.

2638085, i'm disappointed.
Posted by ninjitsu, Sat Dec-10-11 03:34 AM
i thought this was going to be about DeePhunk murdering all those rappers.
2638402, I'm disappointed he didn't bust his guns.

Posted by Brotha Sun, Sat Dec-10-11 09:45 AM
Their pages are annoying.
2638117, Renegade.....
Posted by blueeclipse, Sat Dec-10-11 11:25 AM
This should be #1.....Em went fuckin nuts on this shit. Put this shit onto a time capsule and in 50 years when they clear the rubble and find it they're gonna be like "Who is this dude on here with Em".
2638118, Jay held his own on that track and it shouldn't have even been #2
Posted by csuave03, Sat Dec-10-11 11:45 AM
2638523, ummm.... jay's verses are sick on that song tho. em didn't murder shit.
Posted by mathmagic, Mon Dec-12-11 11:28 AM
2639155, WOW!
Posted by blueeclipse, Wed Dec-14-11 04:04 AM
Y'all need to put Jays dick down. Right now.
2639454, Oh my bad, I didn't know I wasn't allowed to disagree
Posted by csuave03, Wed Dec-14-11 06:45 PM
Em had the stand out verses, not many people are debating that.

However, lets not act as if Jay mailed in his verses. He held his own with the off-beat flow and multis.

There are many better examples of an MC getting embarrassed on a track
2638160, LMAO@ Pimp C/ Big Pimpin!
Posted by thebadnegro, Sat Dec-10-11 05:55 PM
no disrespect to the deceased, but that shit is Luda!

they could've at least said Bun B.

smh@ these bullshit magazines and their bitch ass, irrelevant to real (hip hop) nigga ass opinions.
2638248, Nobody singing along to this is waiting for
Posted by JFrost1117, Sun Dec-11-11 11:01 AM
"It's the...big Southern rap pimp presario" when this shit comes on, even to this day.

They're waiting for "SMOKIN' OUT, POURIN' UP, KEEPIN LEAN UP IN MY CUP" to rip through their speakers/headphones or whatever.
2638281, Yup, technically Bun had the better verse, but Pimp's charisma and delivery bested everybody
Posted by Amritsar, Sun Dec-11-11 01:44 PM
2639111, If u waitin for that bullshit ass verse to come on, chances are
Posted by thebadnegro, Tue Dec-13-11 10:32 PM
u're a dumbass country muthafucka with a 5th grade vocab/reading level, or a dumbass southern rap dickridin mufucka with a 5th grade vocab/reading level... or maybe just a person who enjoys listening to wack shit. *shrugs*

no charisma or delivery can make up for the idea that this bubble gum, "dr. seuss, mother goose" ass verse murdered Jay on his own shit. f.o.h.w.t.b.s.

>"It's the...big Southern rap pimp presario" when this shit
>comes on, even to this day.

... nor was i trying to argue that Bun's verse belonged on this list either, hence my use of the words "at least".

now please, continue to try to justify the notion that Pimp C could EVER body Jay on anything. it's so entertaining when niggas come up in here defending bullshit that is so clearly wack as fuck.

LOL, first Young Roddy in the Jet Life post and now this.
2639170, you wouldn't know a good verse if it hit you in the face
Posted by ChuckFoPrez, Wed Dec-14-11 07:27 AM
2641797, That's some powerful posting right there my dude.
Posted by thebadnegro, Wed Dec-21-11 07:42 AM
almost as impressive as that Pimp C verse.
2638163, take off that Rawse shit and put on The Watcher 2
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Dec-10-11 06:08 PM
Rakim had the better shit on there with 1/2 the mic time
2638413, Nahh Jay got off on their two, might have been his best flow ever
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Sun Dec-11-11 10:23 PM
2638469, nah he was just giving credentials and shit on his verse
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Mon Dec-12-11 08:00 AM
for a minute and a half
his shit was dope but Rakim came with only a 16 bar verse and actually flipped the concept into something more than it was meant to be
2638249, I'd trade OutKast's Gangsta Shit for "Int'l Player's Anthem".
Posted by JFrost1117, Sun Dec-11-11 11:03 AM
It's not a guest verse, but he wipes the floor with everyone that came before him and the 2nd half of Stankonia with that verse. Especially the ending.
2638261, or better yet, "Black Ice"
Posted by DonWonJusuton, Sun Dec-11-11 12:20 PM
2638280, How? Gangster Shit is a Kast song?

2638283, Ok, he meant Andre?
Posted by Oak27, Sun Dec-11-11 02:18 PM

2638284, I thought it'd be implied.
Posted by JFrost1117, Sun Dec-11-11 02:23 PM
-I did say "I know it's not a guest verse"
-The article was talking about Andre's verse on IPA
2638317, lol
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Dec-11-11 04:12 PM
this entire shit is about guests murdering their host so why would you list Gangster Shit and then say "I know it's not a guest spot?

2638294, Nas was not the first non-Wu member featured on a Wu track..
Posted by Original Juice, Sun Dec-11-11 02:54 PM

2638359, Tical features Carlton Fisk and Street Life...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Sun Dec-11-11 07:28 PM
The former relatively prominently-he's on two tracks. Basically, the guest-appearances go even furthe4r back...
2638366, eh, Cappa wasn't really a Wu member early either but he was
Posted by Bombastic, Sun Dec-11-11 07:46 PM
just like Dirty's cohorts aren't Wu members but they're part of the offspring each dude had.

Nas was the first truly unaffiliated MC of record to be on a Wu record, which was perfect for both him & the Wu's legacy.
2638384, anything to shit on Nas

brookly zoo are wu affiliated. While Nas is not.

2638369, is there a list that won't cause 50 OKPs in any given post declaring
Posted by Bombastic, Sun Dec-11-11 07:56 PM
the list author or publication's hip-hop opinion invalid or non-credible?

Bunch of mad, miserable, non-published, cynical, salt-saturated crabs in a boring-ass barrel in this forum nowadays.

The replies in this kind of thread are almost always more predictable & silly than the actual link/swipe that generates the lame paint-by-numbers vitriol it brings out here.

2638393, How was Pimp C's verse the best?
Posted by Starks dunked on Bulls, Sun Dec-11-11 09:23 PM
i could understand Bun B, but Pimp C? what did he say that was so amazing? was it the flow? that wasnt wild either
2638399, I never liked Luda but yeah he murdered "Made You Look"

i got some issue with some of the choices but i aint knocking the effort/shine

2638521, i never understood this concept.
Posted by mathmagic, Mon Dec-12-11 11:26 AM
I never think of two rappers on one song as 'competing'. aren't you on the same team? That's like saying Pippen murdered Jordan in game six. No he didn't. They're on the same squad.
2638526, This concept is Ethers real lasting legacy to be honest
Posted by kwez, Mon Dec-12-11 11:35 AM
And ironically it's also the reason we'll never hear an Eminem/Nas collabo.

************************
2638530, how do you mean?
Posted by mathmagic, Mon Dec-12-11 11:44 AM
2638545, Nas can't do a collab with Eminem for obvious reasons now.
Posted by kwez, Mon Dec-12-11 12:08 PM

************************
2638780, i don't get the jay/em renegade example sometimes.
Posted by k0la, Mon Dec-12-11 11:42 PM
i mean, yeah, eminem wreck that verse for real. but he used some recycled verses/beat. it was basically jay replacing royce, but jay DECIMATED that beat. the off-kilter schemes and all? i mean, when nas said jay got murdered on "ether", it was a statement, and it worked. but ionno if em really got jay that bad, if at all.
2638855, I don't know
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Dec-13-11 10:05 AM
everyone was on Em's part. it could've been anyone on the song and they would've been an afterthought which is a testimate to how dope Em's verses are.

and I agree that Jay also goes in on the song but even then he's still just "whatever".

And you can't really say Em used a recycled verse and beat because Jay took the track and substituted Royce. So Jay knew what he was getting himself into when he did it and I'm sure tried his best to keep up.

2639164, I mean, Nas invented the term due to that verse, even if we
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Dec-14-11 05:43 AM
didn't listen the first time and say "Eminem murdered him"....I think it was more "damn, Eminem got off on that track" without us really putting Jay down. But Nas brought attention to it and made everyone say "oh shit.....he did get served on there, huh???"

And Jay's verse was like 8.5/10...dope, but nothing amazing. Eminem beat him in eeeeevery way on it...the content, lyrics, multis, delivery, flow...I mean it was literally his track with him making the beat. Jay's best contribution was "do you listen to music or just skim through it" which folks still say, so he definitely wasn't MURDERED to that extent. But Em clearly ran that shit.

Em buried that song...And he killed Jay...Hey, it happens to the best...
2639266, i see what both of y'all are saying.
Posted by k0la, Wed Dec-14-11 12:36 PM
i didn't know jay requested to just replace em; i thought "renegade" was just what em' brought to the table.

and yeah, i guess thinking about it, who before em was that close to sonning jay when it's just the two emcees on the track before "blueprint"?.

still, all things considered, i say jay/em were about even
2638856, I feel like on some of these...
Posted by Anonymous, Tue Dec-13-11 10:07 AM
the longer the verse the better people think it is.

like if you go in for 32 or 48, no matter how dope the dude with 16 came, he still is going to get "murdered" because people get that "wow" factor when someone raps for a long time.

2638861, J. Dilla had better rap things than Common on that song.
Posted by Jeff Sexx, Tue Dec-13-11 10:12 AM
The one that was on both Like Chocolate Waters and Fantastic Guys Volume 2.

2639312, of course he did, Boot-Boot Man.
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Dec-14-11 01:57 PM
no snark, Dilla did eat that track alive.
I think I finally "got" Slum hearing that verse too.
2639229, honorable mention: AZ/LAB, Lyte/AFCP
Posted by natlawdp, Wed Dec-14-11 11:22 AM
AZ's verse is arguably the best verse on the album.

dunno if Lyte wrote that verse herself, but she gutted Com with that one line.

2639278, Common on "get 'em high"
Posted by LosOne, Wed Dec-14-11 01:02 PM
His verse was super ill.
2639326, Is Fast Lane on that list?

Matter o fact he killed Em througout the album...

Sorry Em fans tough love from the D....

2639473, Deck didn't murder Ru on that tho
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Wed Dec-14-11 07:25 PM
he came more visceral, yeah, and attacked the track harder
but Guru was dropping some ill shit in that verse
'the righteous man sacrifice to get what they deserve'
cannot afford to be confined to a cell/brain waves swell, turning a desert to a well'
'the brain wake causes vessels to circulate/like constellations reflect at night off the lake'
you can't front on that shit, bro
2639467, Jay did NOT get murdered on his own shit because....
Posted by Boximus Crime, Wed Dec-14-11 07:13 PM
It wasn't HIS shit to begin with. That shit was a Bad Meets Evil track. Point blank. Em used it after him and Royce had that big blow up and went their separate ways. When that article hit the mags like "Em has been in the studio with Jay" and I heard the final result I was like "to do what? take Royce's verse out? Because he sure wasn't in there to produce". Then when Royce dropped the Build and Destroy mixtape we actually hear Em getting murked on that track.
2639562, "Beast from the East" is easily the greatest ever.
