2625553, The most overrated song from [insert great Rap artist/group] is........... Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Tue Nov-08-11 07:07 PM
And to be clear..."overrated" as in the song that you feel is seen as one of their best songs, if not best, whether commercially or by their own fanbase. And try not to do the usual, like "I think ALL 2Pac/Jay-Z songs are overrated"...just name the one that you really don't understand the hype about. It can even be a song that you like, but don't feel is as great as folks say.
So yea...we can do this one for Rappers only...just list the artist as a direct reply to this post.

2625570, "Ain't No Nigga", never liked that song Posted by Oak27, Tue Nov-08-11 07:13 PM
Also, "Empire State of Mind" annoys the fuck out of me, but I think that's a result of everyone and everywhere playing it to death. I've never gotten so sick of a radio single without actually ever hearing it on the radio.

2625596, RE: Nas Posted by Birdzeye, Tue Nov-08-11 07:51 PM
That song on Stillmatic, I think it was called rewind. The concept of telling a song in reverse was good but the story/plot and execution were terrible.. I wish someone like ghosface, biggie, or confusion had thought of the idea as they would have executed it a lot better..
|

similar to Rewind where the concept was better than the execution.
I remember when the album dropped and my boy thought I was going to love those songs and I was just like "they're cool" but the song doesn't live up to the concept.
lol
|
2965976, "One Mic" Was Hyped Up By Eminem/Nas Fans Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue May-17-16 02:35 PM
I see Nas wanted similar production to "Lose Yourself" with the calmness to loud vibe of the beat, I didn't even like Em's song but I can tell hip-hop fans wanted all their favorite rappers to go that route (or jump the bandwagon) and that's what Nas did.
His lyrics were okay but that beat sucked ass, I've heard remixes for both songs that were WAAAAAYYYYY better than those beats.

2626129, No Idea's Original or Blaze a 50 Posted by ChiefRocka, Wed Nov-09-11 04:39 PM
These joints were some of the most hyped up of the I Am/Nastradamus era leaked tracks. They eventually made it onto Lost Tapes and are probably my 2 least favorite tracks on Lost Tapes.
A lot of Nas enthusiasts (and I count myself among that group) will still list these tracks when talking about Nas' best work, but they are both boring to me. Probably because of the lame beats, and the lazy ass flow on No Idea's Original. People love to quote this track as some sort of classic example of lyrical mastery, but I find it to have one of the most disjointed fragmented flows. The first half of the verse is pretty weak, the 2nd half picks up and has some quotables, but this shit wouldn't even be in my top 50 Nas verses.
|
2626154, lol at "Blaze a 50" being overrated, you must be related to that Posted by micMajestic, Wed Nov-09-11 05:14 PM

fullback from the Raiders. The beat might not be everyone's taste but the story is highly engaging. And "No Ideas Original" didn't even get that much hype.

2626155, C'mon fam Posted by ChiefRocka, Wed Nov-09-11 05:20 PM
I didn't say it was wack. Overrated is highly subjective.
Blaze a 50 wouldn't sniff my top 100 Nas joints, neither would No Idea's Original.
And the latter had plenty of hype, especially when Lost Tapes came out. The internets was riding that song hard. I used to frequent multiple Nas message boards at that time as well as places like SOHH and AHH, any place you found Nas stans you found people raving about that song.
All I'm saying is, they're my 2 least favorite songs from Lost Tapes and wouldn't clock my 100 favorite Nas joints.

2722664, I Gave You Power Posted by melmag, Sat Jul-21-12 10:52 PM

besides, OK executed the concept better 2 yrs prior with Stray Bullet.
|
2779321, that beat is lovely Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Mon Feb-18-13 09:28 AM
Primo's piano keys/one note bass hit/offbeat drum programming is masterfully executed and propelled the story moreso than Nas' lyrics in my opinion

2965982, I've Always Like "Gravel Pit" Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue May-17-16 02:43 PM
It's not the norm for them so it fits to me, The Wu doesn't always have to be on some serious shit (ODB for example was fun with it), so to have a fast pace beat with them still spittin' the same stuff they usually spit was nice to me; plus the video is hilarious.

2625732, You Probably Didn't Care For It Cause It Has No Hook/Chorus Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Wed Nov-09-11 03:04 AM
Most music listeners can't get with songs that don't have a catchy hook or chorus; and "Triumph" doesn't have one at all; but to me that's the whole genius of the song cause it reintroduced the members as Wu-Tang for their second album and it was just straight up lyrics being spat.

2625748, It is so damn unorthodox. But that opening verse, wtf??? Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Nov-09-11 07:20 AM
I damn sure wasn't a lyrical head back then, but even EYE learned that shit and was amazed...shit even made me look up Socrates in my Encyclopedia (remember those big ass books that inspired Wikipedia?)

That guitar riff is brilliant in its simplicity - pure hype in music form. And the rhyming is some of his best if you like internal rhyme.

2625928, What? I'm not a huge Em fan but that song was epic. Posted by micMajestic, Wed Nov-09-11 12:58 PM
Maybe a little too epic for abusive radio/video play (it dampens the message a little), but still that song is always going to be a classic. What exactly is your issue with the song? ________________________ Sorry, no candy for you

I'd go with "Elevators" (good song but it's like my sixth favorite on just that one album) or "Ms. Jackson" (again - good song, but about my sixth favorite on that album; also the chorus and the "forever? forever ever?" bit were so catchy that they became instantly over-exposed).

2722925, RE: The most overrated song from [insert great Rap artist/group] is........... Posted by Mossi1, Mon Jul-23-12 02:55 AM
I'd have to say Public Enemy: Fight The Power. Although I regard it as a high-caliber song, it really wasn't as lyrically powerful as some people seem to think. It was a load of angry-sounding sloganeering alongside the one line that grabbed a substantial degree of attention: "Elvis was a hero to most..."

2965984, I've Always Hated "93 Til Infinity" Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Tue May-17-16 02:53 PM
I never cared for SOM either, their voices annoyed the hell out of me, back then east coast rappers had a deep voice while the west coast rappers had high pitched voices that irritated my ears.
Plus I had the Billy Cobham album with "Heather" for mad years since I was a kid so I knew about playing it on 45rpm to rhyme over it, so when somebody finally rhymed over it I was pissed it was these clowns ruining it.
It was six jazz albums I had when I was a young kid and played and rhymed over certain songs before I knew about sampling:
(1)Chico Hamilton "Chico & The Players" (2)Young-Holt Unlimited "Oh Girl" (3)David Newman "Front Money" (4)Tom Scott with California Dreamers "Honeysuckle Breeze" (5)Billy Cobham "Crosswinds" (6)Herbie Hancock "Headhunters"
