2621948, Grind Date: is there a better new millenium rap album Posted by Invisiblist, Mon Oct-31-11 08:15 AM
by an artist/group who came to prominence before BIG?
I think Nas is the only contender. I know I am going to eat those words.

Out of all the BCC releases the only albums I have ahead of it are "Enta da Stage" and "Da Shinin'".

this one song is more satisfying to me than anything on grind date. but i realize that's subjective.
there was at least 6 dope joints on total eclipse. it was better than their 2nd one.

I place that album in the A- list right behind Illmatic, Cuban Linx, Infamous and albums like those.
Easily Top 20 hip-hop album from the mid-90s, if not 10.

2621976, I made a post about how dope that album was and Posted by Anonymous, Mon Oct-31-11 09:10 AM
it tanked.
I thought is was a great record. That Nottz joint was crazy.
I also liked SNW's Reloaded and I really like Monumental as well.
*shrugs*
maybe that's just because those albums are true to their sound and a lot of people are past that?
I don't know but I liked all of those albums.

Yeah, I guess it might be that.
"Total Eclipse" and "War Zone" both had that thick boom-bap I still love.
"Reloaded" was really good, too.
"Monumental" I only listened to once and it didn't stick at the time, but I'll revisit at some point. It came out around the time I had a lot of other stuff in rotation.

2621984, see, maybe I'm biased but Posted by Anonymous, Mon Oct-31-11 09:25 AM
Monumental is a dope record. I feel Pete gave them tracks that they could excel on.
There are some great moments on that album and really no bad ones.
There are a few songs that if released by (insert popular rapper here) produced by (insert popular producer here) it would be a hit.
Reloaded was really dope imo. The production on that album is great hip-hop.

and when i say better they might not be better albums in the tradional way people try to judge albums. "cohesiveness" or whatever... i got more spins out of all of those either for 1 or 2 songs that hooked or whatever the reason might be than i did out of grind date.
grind date is one of those albums where the instrumental version is more enjoyable than the retail imo.

And it was not meant as knock on the album, as I thought it was a great record.
Just saying, for the way this place hyped it up when it first came out, you'd think it would've been mentioned a little sooner in a post like this.

technically the roots recorded organix in 93, I think. A year before Ready to Die. But I guess they really didn't come to "prominence" before then.

2623047, Grind Date Question Posted by Dariusx, Wed Nov-02-11 12:04 PM
I love the whole cd (one of the few hip-hop cd's I play all the way through). I remember first hearing it and fell out of my chair when I heard the Yes sample ("Ritual" from Tales From Topographic Oceans and the Rick Wakeman sample from The Six Wives Of Henry The 8th.
Someone "borrowed" my cd years ago and I never got it back. I can't remember the name of the guy who spoke at the end of one of the title track "My father had two jobs but he loved his kids" or something like that.
