2619424, Kendrick Lamar is good but his man's Ab-Soul Better
Posted by Mash_Comp, Tue Oct-25-11 08:37 AM
I'm fond of the bol K.Dot and all his success is pretty amazing to witness. His whole crew Black Hippy -- consisting of Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul -- is tough and it's clear Kendrick Lamar is being shot out as the breakout star of Top Dawg Entertainment...and he deserves his shot.

But I been checking out Ab-Soul since last year and was amazed nobody gave Soul Brother #2 the same listen and shot folks give Kendrick and even Jay Rock (who was signed to a major). I'm gonna try to hip you good people to Ab-Soul if you don't mind.

This track is from Ab's free LP Long Term 2 featuring Kendrick Lamar "Turn Me Up" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WfZ7AQOA8c

This track is from Ab's debut Long Term 1. Dope video actually mirroring the concept of the song too. "Day In A Life" - http://youtu.be/-uowKCItkjI

This is the opening track on Long Term 2, "Still A Regular Nigga" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdXIKGXP3wM

Ab-Soul's first for-sale project Longterm Mentality was dope and here's a song featuring one of his Black Hippy cohorts Schoolboy Q "Hell Yeah" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHApiAnSHx8

Another collabo with Kendrick Lamar, "Moscato" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF0NEkdd4ag

Ab-Soul is on a come up. Let me know what ya'll think.

Bonus: Gonna add some Black Hippy joints too.

Black Hippy Freestyle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ycAvy0ESE0
"Zip That Chop That" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRY1k6aSE0g

The whole Black Hippy crew is dope, but if I had to rank all their releases, Kendricks are easily the weakest.

I kinda agree, but not really.

Lyrics - Ab > K.

Voice - JR > K.

Smoothness - Q > K.

But what Kendrick has that the others don't is the total star package.. He stands out in a unique way, is versatile and intelligent, aims to be the voice of the people, and projects a youthful energy.

Yes, he sounds like Elmer Fudd on helium, looks like he's in the 8th grade, and dresses like he's kindergarten.. but he makes it work for him.

Also, his "albums" stand alone as fully realized pieces of work.. Not just collections of songs with album titles that don't really represent the music within.

Also, it does not hurt that he's from Compton. LOL

White Bronco.
2620424, yeah this is about right
Posted by Mash_Comp, Wed Oct-26-11 07:14 PM
I'm such a lyrics fiend and I think Ab-Soul has had the sharpest bars out of the whole crew since day one. Jay Rock's voice is undeniable. Schoolboy Q is a pleasant work in progress who takes risks and I like that in a rapper.

Kendrick Lamar is a complete songwriter and he's managed to impress strictly on presence alone. He has that "it" factor.

Not clowning, but he really does look like an Australian Aborigine.

I just figured it's short for Absolute, though.

are no where near as good as pineal gland, black lip bastard and empathy. yes, his pain tops those, but it's really BJ's song. Cartoon & Cereal was shoulders above damn near every rap song i've heard this year, until Big Kuntry linked up "Book of Soul" from Control System. That song is so dam vivid, emotional and well written, it's neck and neck with "cartoon and cereal" IMO

they're both just excellent rappers. i take Kendrick right now though
2687244, I'll say this...the lyrics are neck and neck between the two..
Posted by Mash_Comp, Tue Apr-17-12 03:39 PM
...FOR ME, let me stress that. TO ME, Ab-Solo is way doper and more relatable than Kendrick but by no means is Kendrick wack or FAR behind him. I just happen to prefer Ab-Soul as being well-rounded.

I think he's definitely the better rapper of the two.

Lyrically, vocally, and flow-wise.. he just is. I think his presence at TDE may be the thing that pushes the others to step their lyrics and flows up.

However, Kendrick remains the better all-around artist. His music is more captivating, and his albums and songs just feel more complete to me. His releases are what's pushing the crew to step the cohesiveness of their albums and sound as well as the overall theme of their work.

I think the real test will be on the Black Hippy album. Who of the 4 will shine the brightest? Who's going to steal the show?
2697747, I can't think of one song Ab-Soul has outshined Kendrick on let alone album

I think Kendrick covered a LOT of ground in Section.80 but his deficiency vocally detracted a lot. Not to say Ab-Soul doesn't have the same issues (He does, especially on earlier work), but Ab makes it work for him more IN MY VIEW of it. I'll agree that Kendrick has the best songwriting ability of the four Black Hippy members.

>I think the real test will be on the Black Hippy album. Who

I think they'll all have standout moments. But I thik Ab's gonna be the one with the hardest bars.

really though you wildin'. I don't like a single album he's put out and this new one isn't slappin me in the face off the first listen but I'm reserving judgement. I feel his features but I haven't really felt a full project from him.
2697775, honest question
Posted by stone_phalanges, Fri May-11-12 03:02 PM
Can you really listen to illuminate on the new ab soul LP and say ab soul raps better than kendrick? Really? I listened to the track and was like "ab soul went IN" then kendrick's verse happened.

I'm not saying ab soul isn't really dope. I think he's on of the better rapper's out and I think he raps better than schoolboy q even though I like q's music more.

2698542, Control System is meh so far to me...as far as the Kendrick thing
Posted by Stadiq, Mon May-14-12 03:03 PM

its just not true.

People like what they like...and if you prefer Soul that's fine...but there is no way you can say Soul is hands down better.

Its just not true.

Control System sounds like Ab couldn't decide weather to be Q or Kendrick...he should have just been himself.

Terrorist Threats literally sounds like he tried to remake C & C.

I like songs/verses by Ab here and there...but he has yet to release a full project I love.

Maybe this will grow on me but for now it seems like he is benefitting from the Black Hippy love... because this sounds contrived to be honest.

And his flow is actually getting worse to me. Why is he yelling so much?

I'll spend more time with it...

My younger brothers got me on to Black Hippy when they were in their mixtape phase in 2010. If any crew in hip-hop deserved some shine, it's these brothas right here. This is the "clique" I'd rather fuck with musically.

I think Ab-Soul's production is phenomenal. At the moment, Kendrick is a superior lyricist though; Ab-Soul is good too but might need a little more practice with tightening his flow. He definitely is getting better. So yeah, he could be that next dude, you never know.

2827556, Ab is staring down 4th place in TDE right now
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jul-31-13 04:55 PM
Kendrick at the top, Q shaping up to be his only real competition because he's shaping up to make The Leap on this major-label debut, Jay Rock was first out but last in folk's thoughts once Black Hippy really got going but he's been killing features since Money Trees, Ab's still sorta just playing that 'esoteric one with the hair' part but hasn't put it altogether as a stand-alone artist yet.

If you caught a show on that Black Hippy/Stalley/BET tour it really hammered that point home.

Ab, like Stalley, was a dude up there rapping during his set.

Kendrick's was an actual show with pacing, crowd work, songs people knew (before GKMC dropped), in the case of the L.A. shows some big cameos from vets paying their respect, etc.

Ab-Soul is dope.....

But this thread still makes me laugh....Kendrick Lamar is the best young MC on the scene today....His last album made me a believer...
2827535, not only that but he has killed just about every guest verse he is
Posted by Menphyel7, Wed Jul-31-13 02:20 PM
in one of those rare zones for a mc right now...

Just look at the UOENO remix...Kendrick killed that shit..AB soul didn't know what to do with the beat.
2827548, yeah ab was horrid on that UENO remix.
Posted by Mash_Comp, Wed Jul-31-13 03:32 PM
Jay Rock tho?
2827603, Ab Soul has the best line on that remix tho
Posted by justin_scott, Wed Jul-31-13 10:24 PM
kendrick has the best overall verse.
2827540, agreed
Posted by Kosa12, Wed Jul-31-13 02:51 PM
2827617, I like Ab a lot..
Posted by jswerve386, Wed Jul-31-13 11:39 PM
But really hated his Chance the Rapper appearance and that UEONO remix verse was straight gahbage. But then again he'll snap on Mac Miller's joints and that Whale joint etc etc.. He still had one of the best albums of the year last year.

That crew is dope as hell.
2828495, I know this is old, but

?? How come.. I think he's good

I think they are all in a good position and Ab will probably see a release date sometime soon. It's all one at a time over there so he's after Q

He's got 2 projects done already
2864511, I don't mean talent, I believe Soul Brotha #2 is very dope
Posted by Mash_Comp, Tue Jan-07-14 04:05 PM
I just mean in output.

2864517, RE: I don't mean talent, I believe Soul Brotha #2 is very dope
Posted by double 0, Tue Jan-07-14 04:29 PM
I am only talking about output.

The way it seems that TDE works is they focus on 1 artist at a time. They probably understand that they will only get so much love in the Interscope building so they focus that.

Kendrick was up first.. Now Q and next Absoul.

I don't even know if his budget is even open yet
2864523, True..well, I just felt like back then, I saw a lot more of him
Posted by Mash_Comp, Tue Jan-07-14 04:45 PM
But now with the major situation, it's probably a bottle neck effect of sorts.

2864536, RE: True..well, I just felt like back then, I saw a lot more of him
Posted by double 0, Tue Jan-07-14 06:09 PM
yea.. he def had a run. But once they saw Kendrick go. they are probably trying to concentrate their efforts.
2864491, Which comes first: A Kendick sophomore album or an Ab-Soul debut?
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jan-07-14 03:21 PM
I betting on the GKMC follow-up.

>I betting on the GKMC follow-up.

GKMC follow up no doubt. You see how long it took Q to get his release date. Soul probably won't be out until spring/summer 2015
2864521, TDE claims they are releasing 6 albums this year

@dangerookipawaa

WE RAN 2013 WITH OUT DROPPING 1 ALBUM. I WONDER WUTS GONE HAPPEN IN 2014 WHEN I DROP 6.. THEY NOT READY 4 THIS #TDE #HiiiPoWeR TAKE OVER
2864522, LOL. What
Posted by astralblak, Tue Jan-07-14 04:42 PM
you mean Kendrick's FOURTH full length?

and Ab's third full length (technically 5th)

all this "mixtapes" (all with original production, concepts, and in depth lyrics) not counting shit is silly.

but I agree. I think we'll see Q's some time in the first quarter, than Kendricks, than Ab and then Jay Rocks

MASH COMP STILL WRONG TOO
2864524, I knew someone would bring this argument.
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Jan-07-14 04:49 PM
You know exactly what I mean.
Since going major.
2864537, RE: I knew someone would bring this argument.
Posted by double 0, Tue Jan-07-14 06:12 PM
it'd still be his 3rd...

he was on interscope before section 80.. they just didn't want anyone to know
