2619013, What is Prince's BEST B-Side Song?
Posted by vee-lover, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
For me, 'How come you don't call me anymore' is his best b-side record although 'She's always in my hair' is a very very close 2nd imo.

I also rank 'Another Lonely Christmas' right up there amongst his best b-side songs.

Lets say you....

Poll question: What is Prince's BEST B-Side Song?

2619019, wheres the Horny Toad option?
Posted by LAbeathustla, Mon Oct-24-11 12:33 PM
2619020, "erotic city" and "17 days" are two of the best songs he ever did
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Mon Oct-24-11 12:36 PM
not two of the best b-sides...
two of the best songs.

i'd still give the edge to erotic city though.

2619026, '17 Days' to me
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Oct-24-11 12:50 PM
felt like it was the "R&B" track that Purple Rain so desperately needed, but then again, "When Doves Cry" strangely enough did the trick

it's one of my all-time favorite Prince songs; the line in the sand between one "age" of Prince into the next.

"Erotic City" I've grown to like more when I heard it it unedited (for time, that is)
2619029, ^Damn! that's a keen observation...that song mos def felt like it

It seems like a lot of these jams were made in the current recordings of specific albums but he just had no room or they didn't fit the them of the album as a whole. But there's got to be some shit specifically for b sides like Scarlet Pussy. He knows good and well that (and La La La Hee hee hee) aint had no place on any planned album lol.

Posted by kysersozey, Tue Oct-25-11 06:06 AM

qualify... at least I thought Adore wasn't
2619559, b-side = originally released on the flip-side of a single.
Posted by SoWhat, Tue Oct-25-11 12:27 PM
*sigh* i'm old.

anyway, back in the wayback, singles...

there used to be these things called 'singles'. they were released by record labels to promote albums. the singles were actual vinyl records, cassettes, or CDs. up until the late 80s, these singles typically had 1 or 2 songs on them. the main song was often called the 'a-side' b/c it appeared on the a side of the vinyl record or cassette. that was the song the record label was using to promote the album on which the song also appeared. the other song or songs on the single were called the 'b-side' b/c they appeared on the b side of the vinyl record or cassette. these were used to encourage fans to buy the single in cases where the b-side song didn't appear on a current album. in cases where the b-side song also appeared on a current album, they were aimed at DJs who wouldn't otherwise play the song from the current album.

in this post we're discussing Prince songs that were originally available only on his singles, not his albums. most of them were compiled for the 1993 Hits/B-Sides album. ppl still consider them non-album tracks b/c they've only appeared on compilations like that and/or the Girl 6 soundtrack, which was basically another compilation of his past work. these songs didn't appear on his albums like Sign o' the Times or Purple Rain or Parade.

I cant make a choice about a clear cut number #1 but Shockadelica is in my top 5.

That has to be included in the poll.

And as a B-side to Let's Go Crazy, how would Erotic City have sounded on Purple Rain? Where would it fit in the tracklist?

How Come U Don't Call me Anymore

I go with Erotic City, cause IMO, that is the funkiest song Prince ever laid down. And I remember back in the day when it came out. It was a force of nature. It got played so much on the radio you woulda thunk it was a single. Plus it banged so hard, the radio stations didn't even bother bleeping it out. Just played it straight up.
