2617996, Friday Fun Post: Recalling Ridiculous Rumors
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Oct-21-11 11:14 AM
the shit that people gossiped about that was in no way true but still manages to be what you remember about that person/band/whatever.

Been a while since we had any fun on a Friday. Hopefully we haven't forgotten how...
2617999, I remember a gang of stuff about NKOTB
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Oct-21-11 11:18 AM
along the lines of the Richard Gere joke that still won't go away.
2618014, I'm assuming these insinuated the same preferences
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Oct-21-11 11:48 AM
insinuated in the rumor about Rick Springfield?

By the NKOTB era I was so anti-pop that anything surrounding them probably went under my radar.

As far as the Gere rumor, your connections here from way back may recall that Philadelphia had its own version of that with Jerry Penacoli, then a local TV personality. Incidentally, a good friend of mine is a doc who swears that the Penacoli incident was actually true as treatment was sought at his hospital.

a rather funny read on the subject: http://www.jimgoad.net/index.shtml?rectalforeignbodies
2618029, The exact same one.

Unfortunately at the time I could not escape them/talk of them. They were like Bieber is now to parents of young girls...

that one rumor did make me laugh.

LMAO. That's crazy.

annoyed by their soft image.
2618001, The quintessential: Rick Springfield had to go to the hospital
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Oct-21-11 11:22 AM
and have his stomach pumped...

for swallowing a guy's semen.

This was around the time that Rick Springfield actually mattered, so the oldest I could have been was 10 (in other words, barely old enough to have an inkling of what semen is, and not yet old enough to know that swallowing it does not precipitate medical attention.)

If memory serves, in classic early '80s style I was first told this rumor while Jessie's Girl was playing at the roller skating rink. I seem to recall hearing it elsewhere later but memory can't confirm it.

An online search however DOES turn up a reference to the rumor, much to my surprise: http://www.hawkeyelounge.com/archive/index.php/t-75863.html
2618027, i just found out recently that guy was australian
Posted by ninjitsu, Fri Oct-21-11 12:01 PM
that shocked me

he does not sound it - and even his name is american as hell.
2618193, well, shit, this is news to me too.
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Oct-21-11 02:32 PM
>even his name is american as hell.

because... yeah. it is.
I can't explain it it, but it is.
2618200, He wished he had *Jessie's* girl
Posted by lonesome_d, Fri Oct-21-11 02:37 PM
"Jessie" with whatever last name you could imagine seem quintessentially American, so that certainly adds to the feeling.

Incidentally, I looked up the wiki on the song this a.m., and the woman who inspired the song was in actuality *Gary's* girl... another name I think of as very American... But not particularly poetic.

I also read the Wiki on Springfield (checking to see if there was any reference to hospital visits that would have provided fodder for the rumor), and it turns out he was making records as far back as 1969. Wonder what the heck THEY sounded like (but not enough to track 'em down.)
2618046, i heard that about Rod Stewart.

made reference to Rod Stewart as well.

Weird that you would hear that; I would have assumed that the Rod rumor would have circulated earlier, but iif memory serves you're a few years younger than I.

I assume there's also a geographical bent to the rumor distribution as well on a lot of this stuff.

2618003, The Ohio Players attacked/killed a woman on tape and put it in a song
Posted by Ishwip, Fri Oct-21-11 11:26 AM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Rollercoaster

Urban legend

While the song is known within the music community for its distinctive and influential sound, within the popular imagination it remains best identified with a persistent urban legend. During an instrumental portion of the song, a high-pitched scream is heard (between 1:24 and 1:28 on the single version, or between 2:32 and 2:36 on the album version); this was Billy Beck, but according to the most common legend, it was the voice of an individual being murdered live while the tape was rolling. The "victim's" identity varies greatly depending on the version. The supposed sources of the scream have included an individual who was killed at some prior time, her scream inexplicably recorded and looped into the track. Another version tells of a rabbit being killed outside the studio whose scream was accidentally picked up by the band's recording equipment - highly implausible, since professional recording studios are soundproof. The most widespread version of the myth, however, tells that Ester Cordet, who appeared nude on the Honey album cover, had been badly burned by the super-heated honey used for the photo shoot, which occurred simultaneous with the recording session, and her agonized screams were inadvertently captured on tape. A further variation had Cordet suffering permanent disfigurement due to the burns; she interrupted the band's recording session, threatening to sue, at which point the band's manager stabbed her to death in the control room. The latter scenario, however, is impossible as Ester Cordet is still alive.
Casey Kasem reported the urban myth of the woman being killed in the studio recording booth on his radio show, American Top 40, when the song was on the charts in 1976.
Jimmy "Diamond" Williams explained that the scream was nothing eerie or disturbing:
“ There is a part in the song where there's a breakdown. It's guitars and it's right before the second verse and Billy Beck does one of those inhaling-type screeches like Minnie Riperton did to reach her high note or Mariah Carey does to go octaves above. The DJ made this crack and it swept the country. People were asking us, 'Did you kill this girl in the studio?' The band took a vow of silence because you sell more records that way.
__
I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

Flip it enough? Flip these. Flip off. Go flip some f*cking burgers.(c)Kno

2618350, That a ''glam-fag'' was murdered during an Exodus-concert...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Oct-21-11 09:06 PM
According to legend, some poor guy showed up at an Exodus-show in 84-85 wearing a Mötley Crue shirt (maybe it was Ratt, I think I've heard both), Exodus vocalist Paul Baloff spotted him and told the audience to kill the guy in the name of ''true'' metal. Anyway, numerous Exodus fans hunted the guy out of the club and stabbed him to death and brought the bloody shirt back to the vocalist who would continue to wear the blood-stained shirt as some sort of trophy. I don't believe this shit but it has been mentioned several times during the years.

Actually, Exodus-guitarist Gary Holt have said that they did wear blood-stained and beat-up shirts from various ''glam-fags'' that they beat up back in the day but murder sounds a bit too much...
