2622372, Along /w them Donny Hathaway has 2b in the conversation !!! Posted by eddietauf, Mon Oct-31-11 09:16 PM
Nobody sung to the soul like Donny !!!!
|
2613421, sure. Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Tue Oct-11-11 04:12 PM
he has 3 distinct voices, all of which are great.
a falseto...
a growl...
and a smooth as silk, not quite a croon "regular" voice.
not only that, he can weave all of the voices in and out to create these awesome harmonies.
so marvin gaye is a good answer.
but then again, so is michael jackson? or al green? or frank sinatra?
etc.
|
2613439, agreed Posted by DickGrayson, Tue Oct-11-11 05:08 PM
Now show me anyone else in the history of music laying on a couch singing with the same voice

2613515, where does stevie rank among best singers? Posted by Kid Ray, Tue Oct-11-11 09:54 PM
I would give the top spot to Sam Cooke, then Marvin I'll put Steve third
|
2614430, RE: where does stevie rank among best singers? Posted by GossipGirl4Sure, Thu Oct-13-11 04:31 PM
I definitely would put Sam Cook first, then Marvin Gaye, but
not Steve I don't even think he would be on my list to be
honest, I would put Al Green next, or Teddy Pendergrass
>I would give the top spot to Sam Cooke, then Marvin I'll
put
>Steve third
|
2613558, luther vandross was a hell of a lot better than nat king cole. Posted by ninjitsu, Wed Oct-12-11 12:50 AM
cole had a very smooth voice - but he couldn't project. he had no power in his voice.
|
2613557, No, because Donny Hathaway is. n/m Posted by Admbmb, Wed Oct-12-11 12:47 AM
|
2613564, I'd say he's the best artist as a whole. Sam might have been a Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Oct-12-11 01:05 AM
better singer, but Marvin's body of work is #1
|
2613569, But.... Posted by denny, Wed Oct-12-11 01:19 AM
I think Sam's had more impact. More revolutionary. Perhaps only because of timing but Sam Cooke is a bigger 'root' than Marvin Gaye in pop music.
From whence the river came wider or something like that.
And Marvin always referenced him in his singing. Marvin is a very real logical extension of Sam Cooke.
|
2613952, Probably so. I'm not gonna go as far as to say it's Aaron Hall + Kellz Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Oct-12-11 06:39 PM
But it happens often...it's basically Dr. J and Jordan. Cooke was first and may have been more impactful...but doesn't make him "better"
|
2613576, no, i'd say Michael Joe Jackson Posted by mistermaxxx08, Wed Oct-12-11 01:34 AM
as a Kid alone and had he retired as child artist this wouldn't even be a discussion because MJ as a 11 year old Boy out sung/Sang nearly everybody. even Ole Blue Eyes Frank Sinatra once said the only Singer he worried about was Michael Joe Jackson.
all the singers mentioned are there as is Jackie Wilson, as is R.Kelly(don't front because Kellz can hang and history will show that)
Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Billy Eckstine, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Steve Arrington and a few more.
but back to MJ he did it all with his voice. Marvin and those guys never sang/sung a Rock Song
never hybrided there voice to Hip Hop.
MJ was singing Jazz songs, had classical songs, his voice was an incredible Instrument period.
i love Marvin Gaye he is a Singing Genius as is Sam Cooke,Ottis Redding, Jackie Wilson, but Michael Joe Jackson had a voice beyond his years as a kid and a young adult that was 2nd to no one IMO.

2613741, Why im rollin wit Sam/Otis Posted by tapedeck, Wed Oct-12-11 11:14 AM
These cats could sing three lines and have you crying. Marvin and a few others have to have a whole song/album to get you.

Is he the best ever? I dunno. But I enjoy his voice more than any other. Yes, more than Marvin, Sam, Al, Otis et al.
I thought of this after the live version of "Superstar" popped up on my iPod.

I spent a lot of time looking all over for this thread while I was listening to the bonus accapella tracks of midnight love lp. he was one of the greatest singers and he knew how to use his voice and thats something most singers cant do....in other words, marvin gaye knew how to go high without straining and the use of the diaphram.....the same goes for luther vandross.
|
2621997, RE: Is Marvin Gaye the best male singer of all time? Posted by Thanes1975, Mon Oct-31-11 10:05 AM

|
2622825, RE: in terms of pure singing he prolly the best Posted by Dariusx, Tue Nov-01-11 07:37 PM
I respect Sam Cooke and acknowledge his place in history but I am not feeling him. I'd take Donny, Al, Stevie and Marvin Anthony Hamilton over him.
|
2622851, I didn't see Frankie Lymon on this post... Posted by Brownsugar, Tue Nov-01-11 09:30 PM
All of the singers mentioned here, living and deceased were great in their own unique way. Christopher Williams is good too...Teddy Pendergrass all over again :-) :-) :-) !!!

|
2678013, RE: Is Marvin Gaye the best male singer of all time? Posted by Strangeways, Mon Mar-26-12 09:00 AM
definitely in the top 5 best vocalists of all times.....I was watching a marvin gaye documentary on pbs called american masters and some white man that owns his master recordings was playing back the original vocal accapella to I want you with all the harmonies and it was LEGENDARY because he was singing 5 ranges all at once.
|
2678049, Yes! Posted by BootyGreen, Mon Mar-26-12 11:36 AM
I love Donny and Sam but they did not have the subtlety and diversity in their singing that Marvin had. His mic technique was meticulous, almost scientific even. Donny had a richer, fuller tone but vocally he did not cover all the bases that Marvin did. It's not an official Marvin album but Vulnerable is perhaps the greatest example of Mr. Gaye's mastery of his God-given instrument.

2678064, Surprised no one has mentioned Stevie Wonder - not saying he Posted by vee-lover, Mon Mar-26-12 12:45 PM
is the best male singer but he definitely has a beautiful voice...
but
Donny Hathaway (who Stevie Wonder was influenced by) gets my vote. He had the technical mastery due to classical training but he also was arguably the most soulful singer of his era and beyond because of the church influence.
There's so many great singers though and it really comes down to a matter of personal taste and choice.
You have singers like Lutha who had one of the smoothest and most unique tenor voices ever.
There's El Debarge who had a great voice. MJ of course. Maurice White, another great singer.
There's so many that its hard to pick one.

2678307, Donny Hathaway & Marvin Gaye are Virtually Tied for Greatest! Posted by J-Elijah, Tue Mar-27-12 01:29 AM
I would say Donny Hathaway & Marvin Gaye could tie for greatest singer of all time. They sing with equal levels of conviction and passion and their musical bodies of work contain numerous prolific emotional masterpieces that have stood the test of time.
Greatest of All Time 1. Donny Hathaway 2. Marvin Gaye 3. Stevie Wonder
Musical Greatness Today 1. Bilal 2. Dwele 3. Maxwell 4. Raphael Saadiq

2678308, Donny Hathaway is the Greatest Singer, even Greater than Sam Cooke Posted by J-Elijah, Tue Mar-27-12 01:56 AM
Sam Cooke was definitely one of the Greats, "Change is Gonna Come" is evident of that, but he does not compare to Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," "For All We Know, "Someday We'll All Be Free," & "Little Ghetto Boy," & Donny's entire Live cd. Sam's music does not compare to Marvin Gaye's masterpiece "What's Going On."
Example of Donny's Greatness Live in Concert Donny Hathaway - "HE AIN'T HEAVY, HE'S MY BROTHER" http://youtu.be/7HFDAp8XVrk
Sam can't touch the perfect rich tone, pain, spirituality mixed with blues, & heartache in Donny's voice.
Donny is #1 and Marvin is #2.
Best Singers Today
Bilal is #1 and Dwele is #2.
