2603112, These two

Atmosphere - Watch Out (2005)

and

Fat Joe - Damn (2006)

I didn't see it as a jack though. I just figured it was a coincidence. I was young and didn't know much about sampling, plus this is still like 5 years before mainstream artists and underground artists started collaborating frequently. So back then I honestly would've assumed that someone like Fat Joe would have no fucking clue who Atmosphere was.

Apparently both beats were created using samples from this song.

...who is more than willing to cash in on that formula in the hopes of gaining attention. Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" sounds too close to 10cc's "I'm Not In Love", Elton John's "Rocket Man" is very close to Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig In The Sky".

Artists try to recreate what is hip, and a lot of times they fail. Sometimes they make it through, but barely. Let's not forget that some felt R. Kelly's early work sounded like rehashed Guy. Say what you want about R. Kelly, but he eventually moved away from that and created a style that may not have been unique to him, but he became his own artists so that when you hear him, you think of him and only him.

I mean I guess I can hear the Gmaj, Gmin thing, but they are in different keys and structured a little different...I guess there are a few similarities but I never caught that...now that I think about it the phrasing is suspect...
but 10cc's tune just plays on major/minor relationships of chords, which is something that a lot of songwriters do...
I think that one could just be coincidence...but its not like I would be surprised if it were a blatant bite...there are only so many notes on a piano though...

...MIA is a far better song, and Stay Real was better too ...Dre's shit isnt even debatable because its incredibly corny sounding (rhymes & beat) ....Stay Real beat just sounds way better, the hov song was decent but Jay sounds forced over it (typical HOV steez I know)

PSA is regardeed as one of Jay's top 20 songs, Stay Real is barely remembered within Black Moon's catalog

but okay

2613468, I tried to pretend 'Stay Real' was better because I sided w/Black Moon
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Oct-11-11 07:20 PM
in that debate plus had already been bumping Total Eclipse at the time but c'mon, 'PSA' is murderous.

That song holds up as one of Hov's better bangers ten years later & I can't recall the last time I put that particular Black Moon album on & I'm a big Bootcamp fan.
2613881, PSA is only considered good because of the beat...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Wed Oct-12-11 03:32 PM
....and the beat is a half assed version of the Black Moon joint ...i get it, when people finally hear Hov over decent beat they get a little silly ..but really, that song isn't that special besides the fact that its far better than most of Hov songs
2613953, Shiiiiit....that verse is one of the dopest anthem type club verses
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Wed Oct-12-11 06:46 PM
of the decade, probably Top 3. SOON AS folks hear "Allow me to reintroduce myself.." folks go NUTTY and sing word for word.

I mean, you hate Hov so it's no way to expect props...so it's no reason to argue it. But yeah.
2614220, lol if you say so...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Thu Oct-13-11 11:10 AM
...i dont hate hov ...BP is a favorite album of mine ...but its like thats the ONLY album of his where he gave it his all ...not only is the beat selection top notch (for once) but the vocals are great
2612638, It is also said that Just Blaze wanted to straight jack the sample
Posted by j clyde morris, Mon Oct-10-11 07:39 AM
because of supposedly not being paid for some work he did on Buckshot's BDI thug album.

And Blackmoon's version is definitely NOT better

Bar Kays in there prime live was the sho nuff truth even White boys gave them dap and took a cue from them ask David Lee Roth and Axel Rose about Larry Dotson on stage?

Bar Kays were the truth on stage and kept hits, etc.. 3rd tier to me is a act who might have a out of body hit or two or album and maybe a few decent tours and then faded, but the Bar Kays were in the running for quite a while.

>Which is why to me they are 3rd tier at best, despite the fact
>they sold a lot of records.

I think their records before Allen A. really went hard w/the biting other acts were worthy of a tier above 3rd... but when the late '70s and '80s hit... dude was not ashamed at all who he ripped off. Which is kind of funny to me, because Leroy Dotson was kind of like Rick James before most of (Black) America knew who the hell he was....

on the subject of Allen, man. that biting. I remember OldPro tipped me to some of the records he produced. Ebonee Webb, Kwick...

Ebonee Webb's first album was hilarious. When they weren't biting Prince, they were biting EWF. And sometimes, those two concepts were bridged together ("Keep On Steppin", where you had a dude singing like Prince's falsetto... but on the chorus a dude who sounded just like Maurice White). Like, what kind of Nutter Butter shit...

Kwick had a straight up BITE of 2 Michael Jackson songs, wholesale. There were some original cuts, but I couldn't believe how badly they went at MJ. Then they did Rick James (vocal styling) and all on another cut. Won't even talk about how both Ebonee Webb and Kwick were vying for the title of "who can bite The Time" more. I love that album FOREPLAY (and it's getting reissued soon), but man. Put the Purplesaurus Rex down, man.
2614264, LOL I gotta hear that Kwick record, dude

rips off "Working Day and Night". Might be on Youtube...

the other one, I can't remember the title, but I think it was their second album, it was a Jacksons song that was ripped -- I want to say "Shake Your Body".

What about the Police ''Every breath you take'' vs. Puff Daddy's ''I'll be missing you''?

Or Zapp's ''More bounce to the ounce'' vs. EPMD's ''You gots to chill''?

Or Jean-Jaques Perrey's ''EvA'' vs. Gang Starr's ''Just to get a rep''?

I THINK there's a couple of other Hip-Hop songs that jacks older songs but i'm not sure...

Same chord progression....
Same bridge...
Same exact vamp at the end???

Sheesh!
LOL

Matter of fact:

Glenn Jones' 'We've Only Just Begun' and Surface's 'Closer Than Just Friends' sound like dead ringers for that song.

Led Zeppelin are the rulers of straight up jackery. They stole from way too many people to count.. and its made even worse by the fact that they would use the same exact title or a slightly different one... and the same lyrics and melodies.. cant believe they were the first inductees of the "rock and roll hall of fame" and continue to get a pass for this shit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiiY4ciKFQA is a decent rundown of some good examples but there are more.
ps. bert jansch is the shit

Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Thu Oct-13-11 03:52 AM
(among other stuff)

Diehard Zep apologists continue to argue that the fundamental raison d'etre of Led Zeppelin was to cover and update old blues tunes to begin with... but that don't explain why they jacked more recent stuff like "Dazed & Confused" and "Taurus." Or why they credited all compositions (and publi$hing) to Page & Plant.

Fucking disgusting.

I mean, the things I like best about them are the things they **didn't** steal.

Houses of the Holy contains no plagiarized material, to my knowledge. And that's clearly their best album.

**shrug**

I-IV are all pretty spotty albums, if you ask me. I hate I and II. III and IV are uneven, at best. Just musically speaking. With the plagiarism, they're worse off.

Houses of the Holy is a really good album though.

in fact, Ray and 'em were in a real zone from like '79-81 (well, that was the last year of Raydio). The way they arranged their music, and when Ray produced/wrote for others (Herbie Hancock, Cheryl Lynn), that feeling carried over.
