2598589, Thought this was like a mixtape or something
Posted by ToneNice, Thu Sep-08-11 04:51 PM
not the actual magazine. Kinda bugged but I'm a fan of both said artist and Mag. Nothing wrong with flipping the script.
2598592, but this is definitely a downgrade : (

If you Nina Simone on one side...I don't fault them for put Theopaultius on the other. I'm sure they wanna expand the fanbase, and it's not like it's Machine Gun Kelly on a cover.
2598635, i wouldn't say jumped the shark, i quit buying them a while back
Posted by mr_graff, Thu Sep-08-11 06:41 PM
Maybe they are trying to freshen up something that IMO was getting somewhat stale. *

* EDIT: I'm not saying they were bad, but I noticed the number of articles I was really interested in had been declining. I used to look forward to the whole thing and it got down to 1 or 2 per issue.

2598732, But Doesn't Wax Poetics Have Double Covers Now...
Posted by Dj Joey Joe, Thu Sep-08-11 09:50 PM

2598747, Nina Simone on the other side.

I enjoyed the Roger Troutman and the ohio players issue. since Prince isnt being interviewed on the latest issue, I wont be buying it. unless I hear it from Prince himself, its all from someone else's perspective which is second hand knowledge.
2666011, did they interview roger?

2666040, RE: did they interview roger?
Posted by Strangeways, Wed Feb-22-12 06:14 PM
No, they interviewed Lester Troutman. Roger was killed by his older brother larry back in 1999. I would have had another chance to see Roger live if that wouldnt have happened. I hate that I missed his show when they came to fort valley state university freshmen year back in 1998.
2666110, so it was secondhand information that you got about Roger... n/m

NOOOOOOOO.....ITS COMING FROM LESTER TROUTMAN....the people that were family and closest to ROGER and He knew him the most....thats why He is spokesman for Zapp now.

2711781, it's like a lot of these formerly specialty mags and sites
Posted by howisya, Wed Jun-20-12 03:14 PM
there just isn't the audience there once was for the niche, so they feel they have to pander
2711783, that reminds me
Posted by imcvspl, Wed Jun-20-12 03:17 PM
i wonder how the guy doing the 'one good article' startup is doing. still think that'd be great for music as well.

2711784, I disagree.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Wed Jun-20-12 03:18 PM
These days as the "mainstream" conglomerates into a gigantic amorphous mass, there's actually more value than ever in servicing a specialized niche that can't be authentically duplicated by Time-Warner, Disney or NewsCorp.

Now... whether the money is there is another issue, and depends on your expectations and your operating costs.
2711789, that's not another issue that's THE ISSUE

well, some of the completely independent specialty electronic music sites (news, reviews, interviews) i used to go to occasionally i started noticing were covering mainstream (rap, r&b/pop) music... there was no parent corporation forcing their hand, they just felt they needed to cover these more popular and "normal" musics... so my relationship with these sites completely changed (read: all but ceased to exist)
2711785, unfortunately i stopped checking for Wax Poetics
Posted by astralblak, Wed Jun-20-12 03:19 PM
a little over a year and a half ago, for no reason in particular. imma visit the site and see what ur speaking of.

as for Fader always loved their PHOTOjournalism, as for the writing...
2711791, ehh, i understand why you'd say this
Posted by astralblak, Wed Jun-20-12 03:25 PM
but i always felt from jump they should've balanced the historical/archival stuff, with the comtemporary artist. i'm actually excited to see them cover Nas, Danny brown, Shabbazz and re-trace No Limit/Master P (even though i hated P's image/music when i was a teen)
2711921, the new issue looks really dope
Posted by Options, Wed Jun-20-12 09:30 PM
tho, I can see why some would frown at the lack of older artists covered
2711929, Just got it
Posted by mrshow, Wed Jun-20-12 10:04 PM
It's pretty cool but it's pretty much The Fader now with a lower quality of writing/photography.
