im not sure about your idea that country has ambiguous lyrics to the point where love songs can seem political - that just sounds like something cool to say. but i used to have a few dobie gray albums that were pretty great cos of that combination of country being sung by soul singers. bobby womacks 'goes C&W' album is good too imo, though i know some soul purists hate it.
