And abstract enough that you're often wondering whether what sounded like a sad love song was really a political protest song.

Meanwhile, R Kelly is simply talking about your booty. Or at best comparing it to a jeep. Literally.

So I'm not hearing alot of diversity in thinking in black music today. Come to think of it, even the 80's were littered with simple ass song-writing from black artists. It's like "soul" artists start with a sheet of paper that says "Love Song" and just build on from there.

The 80's are interesting because so much great pop music from white artists of the time was beautiful lyrically. (I'm only saying this now coz I've been on a Tears For Fears binge all day today :-D)

There are alot of counter-examples of course, but I think if it was possible to number them, they'd get dwarfed.

That said, there's alot more to music than lyrics.
