youtube surfing i stumbled upon "oh, by the way" by minnie ripperton:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44LF0BwDsO8

i'm utterly shocked i have never heard that intro/breakdown sampled on, like, a talib kweli song. or maybe i just am unaware of its having been sampled.

what are some songs you're shocked have never been sampled?
2550560, i've sampled that before.

Not bad. Just needs a switch up. That's what I was waiting for when I listening to it; another part to come in. Can get a bit monotonous. Unless your using it for a short interlude at the end of song.

thanks. i agree that it's monotonous...it's unfinished from about 4 years ago. never went back to it.

specifically the break from :58 to 1:19 in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwILIXIC3EU

My favorite version of this standard!
2550573, more specifically, the section from ~1:10-1:17
Posted by come on people, Thu May-19-11 09:34 AM
2550577, and that's my favorite part of it for sure
Posted by lonesome_d, Thu May-19-11 09:46 AM
but the percussion & bass only part seems a more likely sample
2550983, i sampled it about 9 years ago
Posted by dafriquan, Thu May-19-11 09:35 PM
and was disappointed with the result. i think it sounded too "live" for my tastes back then. i also wasn't good at filtering samples to get the right feeling yet. that "i'll never go back to georgia" bass line is crazy and if i was to revisit it, i would just replay it.
2551052, I sampled a different version of that.
Posted by denny, Fri May-20-11 02:17 AM
Had the bassline open....I think it was still the O'farril orchestra too but it's been a long time:

A lot of the 80's stuff I sample.

The 80's are so untapped it's unreal.

which is why I loved Freeway/Jake One's THE BEAT MADE ME DO IT and Madlib's REMIXES 2: SATURDAY MORNING EDITION.

they really got me up on my game.
I'm still trying to figure out W-T-F the base of "The Beat Made Me Do It" and "Old To The New" are. Most of the rest I have figured out.
2550658, Madlib sampled that on his Mind Fusion mix CD

these guys were kind of a poor man's The Band, but they've got some good jams.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BlKN4lleAk

The bit where the claps come (2:13) in would make a nice countryfied loop, but the real monster break starts just after 4:20 and contains a bunch of loopables... even after the band comes back in there's some great stuff - that recurring guitar riff that first shows up from 4:55 - 5:07? Could be gold for someone.
2550678, Nice, that sounds like something Kno would loop up...

Maybe because it's a hard to find album.

2550708, Is this Smokey Robinson song TOO easy to sample or something?
Posted by third_i_vision, Thu May-19-11 12:58 PM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bGFz7nBj78

I looped up that breakdown on my 303 a loooooooong time ago, but I ultimately just deleted it because it was TOO MUCH of a jack move. Some beautiful music should just be left alone, especially on a record as common as that Smokey LP.

I'll be damned if that isn't some of the best soul instrumentation I've ever heard though.

Surely 9th Wonder gave this one a shot at one point, right?
2550747, lol @ what records are common in different areas of the country.

2550768, Damn, I thought all the Tamla/Motown would be $1 bin status in the D.

That's crazy though, it's a great album. Speaking of Tamla/Motown shit that never turns up, do you have a copy of that Eddie Kendricks - My People..Hold On? I had no idea that it was so hard to find in the field. Grabbed mine for $5 a few years ago but I've only seen one copy since then ($30).

Oh and disco dj better have been lying when he said that the Don Blackman LP is "everywhere" in Chicago. SMH I'll send him $50 hand-delivered by a goddess on a unicorn if he can ship me an OG copy*

that smokey shits been sampled. its on some scratch break record i have. the name escapes me right now tho. i wanna say doo doo breaks? i remember because theres a coiler on the cover.
2550988, see that break down from 2:19 on is dope but
Posted by dafriquan, Thu May-19-11 09:58 PM
when i was digging it would need to have a key change in order to catch my ear. because its just one note, i'd be more likely to just grab a crisp stab and play different notes to make a melody out of it. by then it could be from anywhere and would lose the character of the sample source. probably end up sounding like a generic primo beat.
2551054, Good stuff.

But those drums are awesome, and the intro section where he's singing over just the drums - if someone could get the vocals off them, it's be fire.

This track is of course from the same (outstanding) album as Get Thy Bearings, somewhat famously sampled by the Biz.

I'm pretty sure the vocals (Huh! Hah!) have been sampled at some point, maybe even on the Kodo remix joint that Laswell helmed in the late 1990s. And the vocals (at the end esp.) present a lot of possibilities, as do most of the rest of the patterns they use throughout this piece.

But for me the piece that would sound awesome layered in somewhere, maybe a more electronica or ambient type of piece, is the jegog (bamboo gamelan) interlude, 2:09 - 2:37.

Yes...when me and my boys used to pretend that we'd be dope rappers (good thing I'm old enough to where anybody couldn't make a song when I was in high school), I had a whole (wack) song written to this called 'louging'. I had one of those long-winded 'Queens' hooks too. If only I could find that tablet from like 94. I coulda had ya'll rollin. Now, I'd have a song to this about a chick I like and I'd call it 'magic' and straight lift the hook. Good thing I don't have free time.

I think when I posted it up stankpalmer (or maybe someone else) chopped it up, but opted out of using the most obvious 'beat' - the 'banging' part of the tune (the dude's using his banjo head as a drum somehow).

Not quite suitable for a hip hop beat perhaps but still he gets a great drum sound out of it and maybe the shuffle could be used some other way.

I've sat on this one for decades but just now came to terms with the fact that I'll probably never be famous and have a chance to use it myself so here it is. It may be expensive to get the license because of who the artist is but I could definitely see a huge hit coming out of this. It has a more commercial feel but is damn funky in my opinion. The opening break and also parts of the extended break starting at 3:18 (with the flute sound and later the ominous guitar sound) to 4:15 is a treasure trove of loops.

Plenty of other jewels on that album, other than "Love You Inside And Out", of course. I mean, c'mon: NO ONE heard *this* intro:
