2548193, Is there a more well-loved figure in music culture than Snoop?
Posted by Delajoo, Thu May-12-11 07:11 PM
Think about it. The guy has been around so long, everyone young and old knows who he is, always stayed relevant. He makes some good things, makes some bad things, but even when he's bad...he's good. No one really dislikes him (well except suge), who can compare to this guy? anyone? Bueller?
2548228, stevie wonder, probably..
Posted by DonWonJusuton, Thu May-12-11 09:53 PM
but i def. see your point, snoop is pretty much in w/ just about everyone... now, i don't know if everyone who likes *him* would bump his music tho
2548297, RE: stevie wonder, probably..
Posted by Delajoo, Fri May-13-11 06:39 AM
i was about to say stevie too, and its his birthday, and I've been listening to him the last 3 days heavily, I think I need to make a mix in honor of him..
2548360, i've litterally never heard anybody say a bad word about stevie wonder

2548590, he gave some women herpes.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri May-13-11 08:19 PM
that's the only bad press i remember reading about him.

2548624, the only place i've seen ppl dislike stevie was maybe prince.org lol

Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Thu May-12-11 10:03 PM
...sure he's a likeable guy ..but lets not pretend he's got this unfuckwitable discography of albums
2548287, Nahhh man. Last meal?? Top Dogg???
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri May-13-11 04:55 AM
I'm hella biased, but most folks I know like at least 3-4 Snoop albums...it's almost generational.

2548309, he limited himself (no pun) with those 2 records...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Fri May-13-11 08:28 AM
...he basically had to come back to Dre at the end ...most people say Snoop was "back" in 1999 when Dre dropped his new shit
2548595, 1. Completely and utterly beside the point (read the title)

2548238, Elton John
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Thu May-12-11 10:15 PM
does Pop Music, gets sampled in hip hop left and right still

respected in all styles of music and has a pass for life and does what he wants and still gets that respect.
2548597, Snoop is more well-liked than Elton
Posted by dalecooper, Fri May-13-11 08:22 PM
Some people can't past the gay thing or his flamboyance.

And say, when did you get back??
2548250, michael jackson?

2548358, everybody loves michael jackson*
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Fri May-13-11 11:13 AM
i've said this before.

even people that don't listen to MJ in their free time
will lose their mind when the DJ plays "don't stop 'till you get enough"

even people that don't own a MJ album
will stop what they are doing and watch the "smooth criminal"
video if it comes on.

and when he died,
when cnn was playing clips of little michael jackson singing his heart out... everbody was moved... whether there are any
jackson 5 songs on their iPod or not.

*that being said... i think snoop is a "more liked" artist
in this context... because i think most people would want to
hang out with snoop, given the opportunity.

even before the allegations, i don't think people wanted
to "hang" with MJ.

i don't think many people would turn down the opportunity
to watch a ball game with snoop.
MJ doesn't have that effect on people.

2549975, Nope.
Posted by Freshadenu, Tue May-17-11 05:37 PM
He had some good songs, I'll give you that. But MJ isn't as beloved, snoop aint touch no lil baby buttholes. Thanks. but no thanks.

Posted by Harlepolis, Fri May-13-11 05:10 AM
He's not even releasing music thats up to bar these days, but people of all cultural avenues flock to his shows, young & old.

2548359, i don't know that people think Prince is "likeable."
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Fri May-13-11 11:16 AM
i'm a fan (almost a stan)
and i will tell you straight up he's a prick.

stevie, on the other hand, always comes across as
likeable.

i've litterally never heard anybody say a bad word about stevie
wonder.

which is insane, considering how many people know who he is.
2548367, Prince is the opposite of a well-loved personality.

This post is not (at least as far as I can tell) about who makes the best music... so My_SP1200 is missing the point by trying to dissect the quality of Snoop's discography.

I mean, think about this: Snoop is, by definition, a "gangsta rapper."

A GANGSTA RAPPER.

Actually, a gangsta rapper who has produced a series of pornographic videos.

And yet he gets hired to do TV commercials and invited to appear on "Sesame Street."

He's a gangsta rapper who is known to smoke a lot of weed, to the point that it's the main thing associated with him in the mainstream... yet, how often do you hear about him being busted?

The cops probably smell marijuana smoke coming from a car and pull him over, when they see his face they're like "Oh, it's just Snoop... Ride on, player!"

Snoop could probably light a blunt on a plane and everybody would think it's cute.

And then he's a gangsta rapper who starred in a Cosby-esque reality show and then goes back to making gangsta records and is never criticized.

Snoop just gets a pass all around.
2548379, Snoop status is most definitely my goal in music

Posted by Luke Cage, Sat May-14-11 03:21 PM
Who in the hell in 1993 could have predicted that anyone could claim affiliation with one of the most notorious street gangs in Cali, get charged for murdering a rival crip member before even releasing his debut album and then go on to become a global icon with Film, TV and add opportunities out of the ass? Even the NFL and sports leagues come running to Snoop to do things and they are notoriously conservative.

2548592, Dolly Parton.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri May-13-11 08:20 PM
i'd put her on the list too.
2548601, Yeah, it seem like a certain degree of self-parody is a prerequisite
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Fri May-13-11 08:36 PM
to achieving that status.
2548620, Let's review....
Posted by denny, Fri May-13-11 11:01 PM
We got:

Snoop
S Wonder
Bob Marley
Elton John
MJ
John Denver
Prince
Dolly Parton

So I still like Bob Marley as having the farthest reach to all demographics and cultures in that list.

Elton John doesn't really appeal to anyone under 25. Beyond that, there's lots of genre-stuck fans who would HATE him. Metalheads aren't likely to give him a thumbs up.

MJ was closer in the early 80's....but his inappropriate behaviour with children....call it whatever you want....makes it easy to say he's not the most 'likeable' artist.

John Denver doesn't have any reach outside his own genre imo.

AFKAP already showed why Prince has to eliminated.

Dolly Parton is an interesting one....she's got fans outside her genre....

Stevie Wonder merits alot of consideration too. I'd say he's a close second.

But Bob Marley appeals to EVERYONE. Young people think he's hip.....old people can hum along.....his appeal worldwide is undeniable....his personal life and bad habits have never been thoroughly critiqued by the general consensus. Perhaps this is partly due to dying young.

He is literally the SAFEST choice to play at any wedding or social function. Musicians like him....college kids have his posters on their walls....little children dance when you play 'one love'....Retired seniors will sway back and forth at all-inclusive resorts....Africa, Asia, everywhere.

I can't think of an artist that is so widely respected for ENTIRELY different reasons by such a vast spread of backgrounds and ages. He's a revolutionary to some...a simple tunesmith to others.
2548635, I don't think (long) dead people should count.

2548677, This i could see
Posted by Delajoo, Sat May-14-11 06:42 AM
But he's not touching snoop yet.

The main point of this post was to point out how ridiculous Snoop is when you think about what he does. Guy will literally do ANYTHING that pays out decently, horror tv specials, ads, features that might endanger most artists cred, he is the definition of UNFUCKWITTABLE.

And even then, he can do some shit at an age where most rappers are high and dry, and it isn't automatically going to be dismissed. Honestly, he could be still doing this shit 10 years from now!

And its subtle to. He isn't like the biggest earner, he isn't an arena rapper, he isn't winning grammy's, but he has more appeal to the most amount of people alive today.

That's Winning.
2548683, Cee-lo gaining weight. <---- fixed

people like weedheads, i guess.
2548680, yep.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Sat May-14-11 07:28 AM
Snoop's redefinition of himself from a thug to a stoner is a big part of his appeal.
2548720, i thought about him but i think his politics turn lots of ppl off.
Posted by SoWhat, Sat May-14-11 10:45 AM

especially after the movie. It's kind of hard to find anyone who would say anything negative about Ray at this point. Plus as a kid back when tv would actually sign off his version of America would be the last voice that many people in this country heard.

Posted by lonesome_d, Wed May-18-11 10:50 AM
He's never had quite the wide net that Snoop has had (films, etc.), but as one of the last remaining visible and important of the first generation of electric bluesmen, he's become an integral (and bankable) part of Americana... his name is on a chain of rock clubs, and at 86 he's STILL doing ads:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5tpXWlXZoo&feature=player_embedded

I may go to hell for pointing it out, but it's somewhat ironic that his diabetes ads come at the tail end of an advertising career which included earlier stints for both McDonald's and Burger King. And how about this one that looks like it's from about 1980? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gGB0ZWusgA&feature=related

I'd like to see if Snoop is still doing ads at 86.

2550370, i find it bizarre. considering all the 'questionable' stuff
Posted by GumDrops, Wed May-18-11 04:48 PM
hes said and done and STILL DOES (!) over the years.

but hey.
2550372, this is exactly the proof to my point
Posted by Delajoo, Wed May-18-11 04:52 PM
Think about how many times you've seen Snoop do some borderline crazy weird shit, that Tales of the crypt TV movie, random ads and questionable features. But his exposure always ends up being a good look, cause he just doesn't take him self seriously, he's so obviously cool, you just can't fake it.
