you're saying "blackstar" is better than "reasonable doubt," "blueprint," or "black album"? what a fanciful idea!
|
2544364, yeah, that is exactly what im saying Posted by Kosa12, Tue May-03-11 06:26 PM
IMO RD is the best out of those three(which are all great album btw), between RD and Black Star its close, but I gotta give it slighty to Black Star, though I do really love reasonable doubt aint nothin on reasonable doubt like: respiration, KOS, Theives in the night
|
2544489, yeah, i disagree. Posted by Guinness, Wed May-04-11 09:45 AM
i don't even think black star is a good album, let alone one worth mentioning as the best from BK. talib kweli was unlistenable, there were a bunch of songs about rappity-rap shit, and the beats were yawn-inducing. it's an album that only has significance to people who were too young to enjoy BDP, public enemy and cube, but craved something "substantive." the idea that it's better than "blueprint" or "black album" is wildly absurd to me.
|
2555815, sure it was... Posted by astralblak, Fri Jun-03-11 11:37 AM
cauthe reality of ur post shows u got really shitty taste in music "GUCCI GUCCI" "BLOW BLOW BLOW WAKAWAKAWAKA". if u found Talib unlistenable and the beats yawn inducing there is nothing to debate. also that album wasn't rappity-rap at all, it was a social and political rap album. Reasonable Dount is much better than Black Star, and the Blueprint and Black Album may be better but that depends on taste and context

It feels like Florida has heeella hits, mainly on the club/partying tip, but not many ALBUMS that are respected nationwide. I got there in 02...so all the Tampa music, up to the modern Bing Ah and "I'm so high" shit was based off singles, and the albums all had weak album cuts.

2543702, here are five-plus from MN Posted by el guante, Mon May-02-11 10:32 AM
This wouldn't be my personal top five, but it's a good guess at the more canonized top five based on the general feelings of everyone I know:
Atmosphere: "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having" might be their most solid album front-to-back, but I think most people love the older work like "Overcast" and the Lucy Ford stuff the most.
Brother Ali: "Shadows on the Sun"
P.O.S.: "Never Better" (or "Audition," depending on taste)
Eyedea and Abilities: probably "E&A," though I never really got into their stuff that much so I might be wrong about which album most people consider their best. Eyedea also has a bunch of solo material.
Toki Wright: "A Different Mirror" would be my pick, though it's newer, just because I think Toki is super underrated nationally and he's spitting with the very best out there.
Others worth a mention: The Abstract Pack (TC hip hop pioneers), Kristoff Krane's "Hunting for Father," No Bird Sing's self-titled debut, anything from Kill the Vultures, Dessa's "A Badly Broken Code," Big Quarters' "Cost of Living," the list goes on. And then there are acts like Hieruspecs, Maria Isa, Muja Messiah, Junkyard Empire, Ill3, I Self Devine, the other Doomtree acts and many more who have great material here and there, though I wouldn't list specific albums.
Minnesota has one of the strongest indie hip hop scenes in the country, and has for a long time.

2544041, I was gonna post five but you pretty much nailed it Posted by simpsycho, Mon May-02-11 09:35 PM
I think a lot people might argue for God Loves Ugly but YCIHMFWH is the better album, IMO. And I prefer The Undisputed Truth is the better album from Brother Ali but I get preferring Shadows on the Sun.
A Different Mirror definitely deserves to be mentioned with the best albums made by any Twin Cities rappers. It's excellent and terribly underrated.
I think Cecil Otter's Rebel Yellow deserves to be mentioned too, I love that album, front to back. Doomtree's self-titled album as well.
