Posted by rdhull, Fri Apr-08-11 10:30 AM
"Prince called into “Lopez Tonight” during the taping of the show earlier today to announce he will be appearing on the show next week and will be performing 21 nights in Los Angeles at The Forum. This is the info we were told.

George Lopez tweeted this earlier: You must watch tonight, TBS @ Midnight – Royalty calls with big announcement!

So, 21 nights…in Los Angeles? At The Forum? Wowsa! Wonder how the shows will be spread around.

We hear the first show will be next week.

More info as it becomes available….-Dr.FB

It looks like he will have quite a few smaller venues in there. 1000 to 2000 seat venues most likely. He could definitely sell those out.
2536564, Prince could sell out the Forum for 21 shows today...sure he could

I don't know if any living artist could sell out 21 shows at a 15,000 seat venue all in the same city right now.
2536663, Depends on what the tickets cost

I mean he's done it once in London already and LA is a destination city... I hear what you're saying but he could come damn close if the price was right.

And it's not going to be all at the forum which is good IMO. I saw him at Staples the last time he was here and at the Kodak the time before but the best Prince shows I've seen are the smaller venue ones. I went when he had his residency in Vegas. 3 hours in a club venue was a once in a lifetime experience.

might be close to 10 years ago now... any way in it I said Prince's music was suffering because he was trying too hard to stay away from sounding like himself. Thing is now he might be trying too hard to go back on his records but in concert it's just what the people want.

PRINCE ANNOUNCES WELCOME 2 AMERICA LIVE “21 NITE STAND” IN LOS ANGELES

Tour Includes $25 “All In” Tickets

“He had the crowd panting as soon as he hit the stage… It was unbelievably great. Do you go to a Prince show for predictable consistency? Ah, no. You go for moments of divinely inspired madness — and last night, he delivered as many of those as a fan could expect.”

Rolling Stone, December 16, 2010

LOS ANGELES, CA (April 11, 2011) – Prince, one of the most prolific and groundbreaking artists of our time whose recorded music, live performances and powerful artistry have affected music and pop culture like no other, has declared a string of purple days in Los Angeles. He will bring his extraordinary Welcome 2 America Live tour back to the West Coast with the announcement of a “21 nite stand” in Los Angeles. The Live Nation produced tour arrives on April 14th, 21st and 22nd at the world famous Los Angeles Forum. Tickets for this once in a lifetime event go on sale Tuesday, April 12th at 10am PT at Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com. Additional dates to be announced soon.

Prince kicked off the Welcome 2 America Live tour in New York with a celebrated six night stand in the New York area which received tremendous acclaim by fans and critics every night. Prince followed up with three intimate nights in Oakland and six special nights in the Carolinas where he performed many of his fan favorite mega-hits which had fans in every market screaming and dancing for more.

In an effort to make the show affordable for all of his fans, Prince has declared that roughly 85% of all tickets will be available at $25, inclusive of all service fees. Prince has taken a different approach with his concerts, announcing shows a matter of days before they happen, but the fans have come out in full force and shown their support. The first 2 Madison Square Garden shows sold out in 30 minutes and over 45,000 tickets were sold in the first 3 days for the string of Oakland shows.

Every show is unique and a night to remember. Special guests for the Los Angeles performances are expected to be announced shortly but for his previous shows Prince has been joined by the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Maceo Parker, Graham Central Station, Santana, Cee Lo Green, Cassandra Wilson, and Sheila E, so many surprises should be expected.

Much like the man himself, the reviews for Welcome 2 America Live have been over the top. “He looks great in heels, in glitter, in silk, in gold, in black, in purple. His voice can go high, it can go low. He can dance on top of a grand piano and not look stupid. He turns restless leg syndrome into an asset. His New Power Generation band is electric, his three backup singers are eclectic, and he is savvy when it comes to choosing openers.” says the Charlotte Observer. The New York Daily News raved, “Prince is worthy of all royal accolades…The hit-friendly show had a kinetic confidence and racing pace that spoke of his singular place in pop history,” while the New York Times said “It’s easy to envision Prince as another Chuck Berry or James Brown, barnstorming for decades to come.” The San Francisco Chronicle raved “spinning, strutting and swaying in his towering heels as if no time had passed since the days he dominated MTV with his angular suits and perfectly sculpted hair… neither his fantastic voice nor his dynamic legs showing any signs of slowing down.”

Citi® is the official credit card of the Welcome 2 America Live tour. Citi® cardmembers will also have access to preferred seats through Citi's Private Pass® Program. For complete details visit www.citiprivatepass.com.

I might have to see about whether we can move down once we're in there, I can already imagine what's gonna be going through my girl's head as we head up to the top of that joint but I'm gonna let her know we're in nosebleeds beforehand.

Posted by Bombastic, Tue Apr-12-11 03:47 PM
me feel better (then again she's a Forum vet who grew up in Inglewood with access through her pop so she does know the place up & down).

Staples nosebleeds (and their concert sound in general) I'm not even sure I'd bother, I hate that places for shows anyway. It's where sound goes to die.

The Forum I'm hoping will be kinda like the old Spectrum in Philly, that kind of old-school arena where everything feels fairly close & holds sound well.

Fuck it, $50 for two P tickets & no service charges. That's crazy & I feel silly having pangs of regret.

When I woke up this AM I had no tickets at all.

2540599, Best Vegas show I've ever seen
Posted by MothershipConnection, Fri Apr-22-11 03:57 AM
I didn't have any great expectations of this being the rawest shit I've ever seen. Dude is older now and has a pile of money and out to please a bunch of fans.

I'm too young to have compared this to his 80s prime.

So he came out, did a bit of all the hits, gave us a big flashy stage, and gave Sheila E. a big drum solo. Then he masturbated on guitar. And he worked up a bit (a lot) of nostalgia being in that dusty ass Forum.

But really? It's Prince. I've loved that dude since I was a young buck driving around with my pop's old cassette tapes in my beat up car in high school. For $25, he could have come out on the Lakers old hardwood floor and played basketball for 2 hours and I'd been OK with it.

2546202, Thursday 21 April with set list
Posted by Rolo_Tomasi, Mon May-09-11 09:56 AM
I went to the Thursday 21 April show at the Forum. It was my fourth time in the last few years to see Prince and each time he has been brilliant. This has included two shows at the 02 arena in London and then the Saturday night headliner spot at Coachella.

I think this was my favourite show, also helped by me having a great seat.

Prince is the musical master, no-one should be able to dance like him at 53 years old, the man has moves. And the best guitarist currently alive, anyone want to argue with that?

He wasn't getting the sound he wanted for Little Red Corvette (one of my all time faves) so on the fly he got the audience to participate getting call and response from the male/female crowd. It was awesome.

The man has so many hits, its kind of fun that he'll play one of his best known tracks for 30 seconds but c'mon playing the track in full would be so much better. I don't mind if we are there for five hours! Oh an Sheila E, wow on every level.

Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sat Apr-23-11 06:43 PM
Sheila was there but she only came on stage to dance with Cuba Gooding Jr.

It was a solid show...Alicia Keys came out and sang and duet with prince...

but we sure didn't get the song list...and the length of a show that others were talking about prior to Friday..

we did get Mint Condition as an opening act....and they rocked it... one of the nights highlights for me was Mint doing Sometimes off of definition of band album.... probably my favorite non-ballad Mint song, and I've never seen or heard them do it live..

but overall... wished Prince had given us the show others got earlier in the week.

in reaction to him being on until 1:30 the night before.

I think that's why he started last night a bit earlier than he has been (right after 9 rather than 9:30) but luckily he still rocked that stage for close to three hours for us last night with a Chaka 'Sweet Thing' collab & a healthy dose of Sheila both assisting on songs along with Glamorous Life early & Love Bizarre to open the last encore.

Caught the show at The Forum last night, P killed it.

- Chaka Khan opened for him
- Sheila E..
- Larry Graham

just sick!

He played until midnight and pretty much hit every song, at one point during the 3rd encore even told the crowd "I'm outta hits!!" (he did not do Thieves in the Temple)

I'm still stunned. I saw the Musicology Tour at Staples years ago and liked this show even better, although Maceo was his horn player back then, which was also dope.

I talked to a few people that caught that Staples run for that tour, all of them said this was far better. I think part of it is the venue itself, the Forum is just a much better place to see a show than Staples.

2543285, what time did it end? 12ish?
Posted by buildingblock, Sun May-01-11 06:12 AM
how many encores?
2543335, Yeah 12ish. 6 encores I think.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun May-01-11 10:57 AM
We bounced after the 4th I think. I had seen a setlist or 2 with him finishing with Hollywood Swinging so we tried to beat the traffic. The forum is a perfect venue but what a clusterfuck of a lobby area/parking. I haven't been there in like 9 years.

So I missed Doves, Love bazaar, and Jungle Love but the rest of the show was way strong. I'm going back. And staying til they kick me out.
2543286, I just looked up the set list, 'Jungle Love' with Gavin Rossdale?
Posted by Bombastic, Sun May-01-11 07:06 AM
that sounds strange as shit.

But glad you got to see The Midget.

That motherfucka still puts on a show.

And The Forum is a perfect venue.

That 'Whole Lotta Love/Something In The Water/Strange Relationship/How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore/If I Was Your Girlfriend' first encore sounds strong as shit on paper.
2543313, because Gwen was there/did a duet with him too from Rave cd

It's crazy.

Show I was at she did Glamorous Life early, then P came out with Chaka & she did Sweet Thing immediately after, Sheila was in & out after that then finished with Love Bizarre at encore 4.

he made up for giving us only an hour the friday before..

He came out and played on Mint Condition's new song

Sheila performed with him the entire night..

very very funky concert...

I plan on going back..
2543355, wild he did a rick james tribute, huh?
Posted by buildingblock, Sun May-01-11 12:41 PM
even sang his song
2543377, yeah...he gave it up to Rick right after he died
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun May-01-11 02:00 PM
during the musicology tour.

Prince gained a lot from being in the business when Rick James was running things. Rick as a solo artist was a Funk Superstar like we really hadn't seen ever...He set a standard as far as record sales, attitude, and Live show.... Prince coming into the game during that time made Prince raise his game....Rick gave prince the opportunity to open for him during a tour also.

Rick James opened a door that Prince would eventually go through and take to another level
2543520, do u think the time's tigs against funk were prince's thinly disguised
Posted by buildingblock, Sun May-01-11 08:34 PM
attacks on rick?
or was he attackin' george and james as well?
2543531, they all dug at each other....
Posted by Warren Coolidge, Sun May-01-11 09:04 PM
Rick had protege's before prince....and was comparable to Prince in a lot of ways..

I'll tell you this...if you listen to the Great White Cane album..the album Rick did when he was in Canada ...before he came out as a real funkster.... at that point in Rick's career he sounded more advanced musically that Prince did in his earliest recordings.... as a singer, songwriter, musician, producer....band leader... Rick was ahead of what Prince was at that same time in their careers...

by the time Prince was on the rise...and fukkin with rick on the same tour...Rick was passing his prime.... and Prince took off after that....

but there was digging back in forth....I mean Vanity and Jill Jones were Rick James jump offs before they left to go fukk with Prince... If I was Rick I would have had an attitude at the guy just for that....

Rick jabbed back and forth with P-Funk a little too..it was all in good fun.

I see u Block.....lol

I guess its really true you haven't been to a lot of concerts over the years...
2543914, i'm just sayin'...from what i've read of other people and their experience
Posted by buildingblock, Mon May-02-11 03:39 PM
they enjoyed it
but the concerts aint' the end all to be all
maybe an introductory to prince
if you ain't up on him
or icin'
but it ain't the cake
i had fun
but at the same time
i was left wantin' more
maybe that was the goal
but left wantin' more in the
way where i just had a big ass meal
and i'm still hungry
eh
2543912, prince's 21 night stand in LA doesn't feel "legendary"
Posted by buildingblock, Mon May-02-11 03:38 PM

i like the concert
for what it's worth
the experience of seein' him
but after persusin' a few of his
forums and blogs about his bootlegs
and concerts and it confirmed what i felt
it's a cool concert, but no where or way
is it legendary
and just as i thought
that let the crowd sing shit is lazy on his part
niggas ain't pay to hear the fuckin' crowd
sing his songs
nigga, you the artist, you perform AND sing
if we sing, then it's singin' along
BUT NOT IN PLACE OF!!!!
that's like if you pay to see the roots
and black thought lets you rap the fuckin'
lyrics to all his classics
now, it might be fun for one song, but a whole
fuckin' night of that shit?
naw b
anyway, foh all the people actin' like
this shit was the ascension of jesus or someshit
for 25 bucks, it's cool, but anymore and you got gypped
2544202, i agree with this
Posted by GumDrops, Tue May-03-11 11:32 AM
>and just as i thought
>that let the crowd sing shit is lazy on his part

i also hated it when i last saw him when he let individual people sing. i mean, i dont pay to see a talent discovery show. its bad enough when he lets people dance for about half an hour, never mind actually sing.

but yeah, i wouldnt expect a new prince show to be as good as the 80s or even 90s. its a diff era. hes allowed to relax now. now you just go cos its prince.
2544210, nigga, it's 25 tho
Posted by Madvillain 626, Tue May-03-11 11:51 AM
i could see if you dropped a bill on it

people pay 40 bucks to see a bunch of cats wave t-shirts around and half-spit lines over a macbook connected to a speaker

the atmosphere alone, with all those people goin nuts, everyone singing along. maybe i'm not jaded enough yet, maybe i don't have a 80s/90s P concert to compare it to.

2544212, for 25 bucks you cant complain
Posted by GumDrops, Tue May-03-11 11:53 AM
for 25 bucks id be happy with just an hour long set, considering how much most musicians charge these days

plus 25 for prince is cheap

thats kinda generous of him to not charge that much in fact

still, im all for the nicer prince you get these days, but old prince would never let anyone, not even respected artists, on the stage if he didnt think they were gonna be good lol

i guess hes trying to show hes not the mean spirited (tho it was always funny imo) guy he used to be, the guy that would tell his own sax player to shut the fuck up at the end of a solo!
2544215, imagine if he did ONE show at staples center
Posted by Madvillain 626, Tue May-03-11 11:58 AM
he could sell that out in an hour and charge U2 360 tour money for it. Be glad he's giving the entire LA area a chance to see P.

And he's still a dick. Some girl tried to take a pic with him when he had the crowd on stage, and he straight chucked the camera into the crowd. I was dying.
2544220, yeah hes being generous which is nice of him
Posted by GumDrops, Tue May-03-11 12:20 PM
most artists would just be milking it however they could

still..... it would be cool to see him do some guerilla gigging

shows on public buses, trains, park benches, at homeless shelters, old peoples homes

lol

Prince and Stevie Wonder Perform Surprise 'Superstition' in L.A.

Posted on May 14th 2011 3:30PM by Steve Baltin

Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRVhlDwirGY

During his current 21-night stand at the L.A. Forum, Prince has had an array of guests, from Alicia Keys to Gwen Stefani. But on Friday night, during an epic two-hour-and-45 minute performance, the Purple One raised the bar by bringing out living legend Stevie Wonder for a rendition of 'Superstition.'

Opening act Janelle Monae hinted something might be up when she dedicated the Charlie Chaplin-penned 'Smile' to "Our friend, Stevie Wonder." And early in his set Prince called out "love and respect to Stevie Wonder." After the show was seemingly over following a glorious 'Purple Rain,' Prince's stellar band came back out and kicked into 'Superstition,' to be followed moments later by Prince rising from underneath the stage holding Wonder by the arm. It wasn't a total surprise but that didn't keep the place from going justifiably crazy at the sight of Wonder playing his harmonica while facing Prince, who rocked out on his guitar.

Energized by sharing the stage with one of his musical heroes, Prince then led the crowd in singing, "Oh, Stevie Wonder," as Wonder's smiling face absorbed the love. To reiterate the greatness of what had just occurred, Prince reminded everybody, "You've just seen Stevie Wonder."

Coming after a hits-laden set that ranged from 'Let's Go Crazy' to 'Cream,' 'Rasberry Beret' and a duet with Monae on 'Take Me With U,' the guest appearance of Wonder and subsequent onstage dance party was more than enough of a show. But still, Prince wasn't done. At nearly 1AM, he said, "I can't go home" -- and he wasn't kidding.

Musically, Prince and his gifted band are always going to deliver. He remains the peak of musicianship, a hybrid of decades of pop music who incorporates everyone from James Brown and Little Richard to Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. But on Friday, Prince was also feeling particularly playful, and when the showmanship matches the music he is almost without peer.

During the fourth or fifth encore -- we honestly lost count -- he quipped, "I've got too many hits." And then before the 1989 ballad 'Scandalous,' Prince warned the audience, "Oh, we can't do this. Do you know what's gonna happen if we do this?" The place would once again erupt, as they had all night long.

Thank you, Prince.

Thank you, THANK YOU. Not JUST for doing 21 shows at the Forum, Troubadour, and House of Blues in LA. Not just for being a hell of a musician and performer. But for the $25 ticket price.

It's incredible. Yeah sure, dude has way too much money and likely doesn't even give a shit about it any more, but still...$25 for a show is just a flat out DEAL. I went to 2 of them and gladly would have done more (should have, truthfully). I've never gone to 2 shows on the same tour.

I probably wouldn't have gone if not for the price. And I got GREAT tickets for both shows.

Thanks Prince, for an experience I'll never forget.
