2529229, Let's make a BIG LIST of Music docs on youtube.....
Posted by denny, Thu Mar-24-11 02:07 AM
So I was gonna write out a list of music docs available on youtube for wasting away the spare hours. Then I figured I might as well make a post with a big list that others can scan over as well. Some of these I've already seen and others I plan to. In other words, I cannot attest to the quality of those listed.

Links are for 'part 1's' and you can find the followups your damn selves. Obviously not hard to find any of these but I thought it'd be convenient to have a comprehensive list for quick access and reference. Listed extremely randomly and whimsically. Please add on.

I don't dig that 'musical orgasm' kinda hippy dippy thing. I also never really liked Mile's foray into the rock and pop scenes.....so the Crouch comment that follows Santana gave some levity to the doc's intro. Indicates that it's not a puff piece and that different perspectives are gonna be considered.

Not Youtube but oh well

One of the best hip hop doc's i've ever seen.

Scratch Documentary (2001)

http://dai.ly/bbpK8Y

Scratch is a documentary film, directed and edited by Doug Pray. The film explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ’s began extending breaks on their party records (which helped inspire break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching and beat-juggling vinyl, to its more recent explosion as a musical movement called turntablism, it’s a story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who have radically changed the way we hear, play and create music. The documentary opens with Grand Wizard Theodore (New York) telling the story of how he first introduced scratching. Throughout the documentary, several artists (like Afrika Bambaataa, Mix Master Mike, QBert, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and many others) explain how they were introduced to the field of hip-hop and scratch while providing stories and anecdotes of their personal experiences.

2529925, Wondering if you've seen that Iron Maiden doc......
Posted by denny, Fri Mar-25-11 02:10 PM
What do you think about them?

I've got to say....when I revisit some of the heavy metal of my youth I find that Iron Maiden hold up a lot better than most other bands. The bass player and drummer are phenomenal....even though Bruce Dickinson is a douchebag.

The doc made me realize that the bass player is the driving force behind the band....principle songwriter and all that. Pretty rare for heavy metal or rocknroll for that matter.
2529936, I never liked Maiden too much...
Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Mar-25-11 02:34 PM
My favourite Maiden is actually the two albums with Paul DiAnno on vocals-Killers in particular is textbook NWOBHM and awesome. "Number of the beast" is great too of course but it's the last Maiden-album I really like; after that, they got a bit too overblown and bombastic for my tastes, the almost punk-rock/Motörhead-inspired stuff disappeared completely and Steve Harris lived out his prog-rock fantasies.

That being said, they were definitely the definitive *pure*/true traditional (as opposed to thrash) metal band of the 80's-they never sold out or compromised and yes, Harris is a killer bassist (one who use the same descending chordprogressions in like every song but still)...

I always felt that Judas Priest was the gods of true traditional metal but unfortunately, their music became SO watered-down in the 80's. However, when Priest decided to play straight up metal (usually on 2-3 songs on every 80's album), they crushed Maiden... Maiden made better *albums* though, no doubt.

BTW, my favourite trad-metal of the 80's is actually Mercyful Fate/King Diamond but Diamonds falsetto-vocals and the satanic imagery means that it's a "you had to be there"-type of music; I cant imagine a regular young kid hearing that stuff without going "This is CHEESE"!

2530119, Disagreed.
Posted by denny, Sat Mar-26-11 05:15 AM
Iron Maiden is WAY better than Judas Priest.

I'll concede that Rob Halford is better than Dickenson....but when I say this I really mean 'less annoying'.

But the bass and drums in Maiden bury Judas Priest in a fiery hellhole of molten lava.

It was interesting.

I like some of their music but the doc is more interesting in terms of the industry...how radio play relates to record sales....how promotion works....the politics and all that. How decisions get made...

that stuff interests me. That Metallica doc has a bit of that too. The band gets forced to do a promotion for a major media conglomerate and it's implied that if they don't do it....a whole whack of radio stations won't play their next single.

I remember reading somewhere that Nirvana was basically forced to play at the MTv awards one year. In addition, they were forced to play a specific song. The threat was that if they didn't do it...not only would mtv not play their videos but would also stop playing other acts with their same managament (sonic youth, beastie boys, a couple others). Kinda fucked up that Nirvana was held hostage by threatening their friends in Sonic Youth. Makes you realize how artists lose control of their own careers.

no problem, I knew nothing about their music but it's a great doc and shows the industries politics and control. It is quite scary...

slight problem that this is the bbc website so viewing may not be worldwide, however make your self aware of the details so you can maybe find another way of viewing it. I personally had never heard of Sister Rosetta...she was amazing!
