I didn't hear it....cheated by searching on the interwebs....

It's at the very beginning. Just pitch down the opening piano line.
2527196, I think I hear it...

the main sample in Shook Ones is Thackeray Meets Faculty, Then Alone by Ron Grainer
2527202, It's there
Posted by denny, Sat Mar-19-11 07:11 PM
Pitch down the opening. BTW...it's part deux.

2527205, believe what you want, but that's not it

Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Mar-19-11 07:25 PM
like I did when I made up the name of a song Dilla chopped and this dude actually went looking for it
LOL
at least the song I named sounds like it could be it this time
2527210, RE: I know it's the sample, I was trying to see who'd go for it
Posted by denny, Sat Mar-19-11 07:30 PM
I'd be surprised/impressed if someone with eagle ears identified that without pitching it down.

I'm guessing someone was searching for samples....randomly pitching shit down and happened across it.
2527211, I have that record so I've come across it before
Posted by Garhart Poppwell, Sat Mar-19-11 07:32 PM
I wasn't really paying attention to it at first but I had it on repeat and when I came back around with it I heard it clear
2527273, Actually, the process comes from playing records at different speeds
Posted by johnbook, Sun Mar-20-11 02:11 AM
Technically yeah, it's shifting pitch, but it's all about playing 45's at 33 or 16, LP's at 45's, shifting the balance to left or right to isolate drums, bass lines, or whatever. Lo-fi pitch shifting.

They did that with a keymap....playing snippets on different pitches.

You can't just pitch down the 'Jessica' and get the sound.

There's three different semitones being used to trigger the samples. They're triggering them with a keyboard that's been mapped out with speed and pitch reference.

2527338, READY TO DIE COVER BABY FOUND!!!! GREAT WEEK IN HIP HOP
Posted by buildingblock, Sun Mar-20-11 01:09 PM
http://rapradar.com/2011/03/20/ready-to-die-cover-baby-found/

After 17 years, one of hip-hop’s greatest mysteries has finally been cracked. Three weeks after the 14th anniversary of the death of the Notorious B.I.G, The New York Daily News has identified the afro sporting baby on the cover his platinum debut album, Ready To Die. Last year, we asked Puff to I.D. the tyke but to no avail. After all these years, it would probably be cool to recreate the image—sans the diaper of course.

When RapRadar.com, a popular hip hop website, asked Combs about it last year, he said, “That was a baby we just found ….We did a little casting for somebody that looked like Big.”

2527359, dude...WOW...
Posted by tREBLEFREE, Sun Mar-20-11 02:33 PM
I thought the story about that was that it was Biggie's baby picture that they photoshopped!

slowed down to half the speed cause I remember going thru a few JGW albums in '98/'99 an making a few dope beats from 'em and while doing so I remember hearing one part that sounded just like the "Flavor In Ya Ear" song but I could be wrong.

2527709, I never knew what the o.g. sampled either

2527721, I completely forgot that the OG "Flava..." has the same beat as the remix.
Posted by third_i_vision, Mon Mar-21-11 11:33 AM
And no, I don't know the sample.

That and "Crooklyn Dodgers" seem to be at the top of most peoples' want lists. As Garhart said, Easy Mo Bee takes pride in that sample....I think I remember reading an interview where he laughs and says that he's not ready to reveal it. That was years ago.

I mean, we're talking about fucking EARL KLUGH and HERBIE HANCOCK records. People were really overestimating how deep RZA and Havoc were digging (LOL Ron Grainer LOL). Then you have the idiots over on SoulStrut who are spewing shit like:

"People still care about finding samples?"
"I'm curious as to why this is important."

and my favorite....

"Cool. I'm not surprised at all that it's Herbie Hancock."

Unless he was being facetious, EVERYONE should be surprised that it's goddamn Herbie Hancock. While I don't own that VSOP Quintet 2LP, I've seen it multiple times and I'm sure tons of beat heads own it. How a record that common (and don't get me started on the Earl Klugh) could be overlooked for 16 years is beyond me.

Exactly, jabronis got caught up in it being some super obscure shit that they were looking in the bottom of the bin

I really am surprised that it's Herbie, I wouldn't have guessed it, just by that listen and I'm good for picking up a sample that's been downpitched (see: MF DOOM and "Rain Blood")
2527751, People thought RZA was flipping Chinese mandolin private press LPs.
Posted by third_i_vision, Mon Mar-21-11 12:37 PM
>Exactly, jabronis got caught up in it being some super obscure
>shit that they were looking in the bottom of the bin

On the other hand, the "Nas Is Like..." sample really IS some ultra-obscure nutso shit, so I can't blame people for trying to force their brains into believing that "Theray vs. Faculty" was Havoc's secret weapon.

Premier's a really interesting guy when it comes to samples, by the way. I almost made a post about his style a few weeks ago. Turning the last two seconds of Weather Report's 8-minute-plus "Cucumber Slumber" into the Jeru beat on "Speak Ya Clout????" Insane.

For a while, I was under the impression that Primo mainly took whatever was available in the first five seconds of a song (see: "The Shit Is Real" remix, "Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers," "Rite Where U Stand," and "You Know My Steez"). Over the past two years, I've been proven wrong. Very wrong.

2527764, LOL, he was good

about doing that for beats intended for Jeru (see: "Can't Stop The Prophet"). I was just casually listening to some music, and then at the very end of the song... the break.

Premier really showed his Prairie View side with that song and "Da Bichez"
2527776, i nearly pissed myself the first time i heard that.

that's one of those albums that my father used to play when i was a kid...and oddly enough one of the few Crusaders albums i never got around to buying. my homie had the album and i just happened to throw it on one day and...*jaw drops*.

i guess it goes without saying that my father ALSO used to play that VSOP album alot too. LOL. i didn't dig it at the time either.

>Premier really showed his Prairie View side with that song and
>"Da Bichez"

since i'm in snitch mode anyway...YUP! another Crusaders sample. however, i *did* recognize this one when i heard Jeru's song. i thought it was brilliant.

since we're talking Crusaders, how ill was Queen Latifah's "U.N.I.T.Y."???!!

Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Mar-21-11 02:53 PM
>since we're talking Crusaders, how ill was Queen Latifah's
>"U.N.I.T.Y."???!!

I was like, "WTF"...

in that period I raided Dad's record collection. Just threw on some random shit I liked from both Crusaders 1 and the 2nd Crusade.

Then I hear that shit popping up in rap records. Like Ice Cube, Guru (the song with N'Dea from the first Jazzmatazz), and the aforementioned...

they don't get namechecked as a source a lot, but in the '90s, cats was on it
2527937, RZA does go pretty deep for his samples though
