“It’s Been You” seems to be a song about a friendship that slowly blossoms into a romance. It’s about realizing that a love may have existed “for years and years” without the speaker knowing, and how knowing that has transformed her life.

The first version, performed by the Perry sisters Perri, has such a jubilant energy that it really drives the song’s point home, complete with its near-mid-tempo groove and an excited saxophone solo. The cover, performed by Anita Baker, is more reserved and contemplative in comparison, making the song more of a ballad complete with an electric guitar solo.

The first version was Perri’s second single from “Tradewinds”, but for some reason, it was overlooked until Anita Baker covered the song from her former background singers (from her tours and the “Giving You the Best That I Got” album) in 1994, charting as high as #32 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart in 1995.
