I flew out to New Jersey to see him for my b-day on the first night 12/15 at the IZOD Center. It was so good that I said as soon as he comes here to California I am there. Tickets on sale Friday. Two shows announced so far....

Anyone going?

She's seen him twice so far but she has been waiting for this tour to hit out here. I told her we could go if so but I thought I'd have more time to prepare... making it harder to say no is the fact we are in Oakland on Friday for a Chromeo show... so basically we just have to drive down 3 exits to pick up Prince tickets.

I'm looking at a 90 mile drive each way.... during a work week.

btw, have you been down to the fox theater lately? I'm heading down Friday night and was wondering what the parking is like over in that area. That's where they been talking about putting the new A's park and I know they said parking might be an issue.

My job is like 10 minutes (at the most) away from Oracle. The show would mostly be a royal pain for my girl, who works out in Burlingame, and who's boss is an asshole who wouldn't let her leave early.

LOL, you're going to that Chromeo show, aren't you? I couldn't get it together to get tickets to it. Um, there are lots in the area, as well as some street parking. It's not phenomenal but you should be able to find something. Actually haven't gone to a show there yet, so I don't know exactly where to point you.
2506884, Yeah we are going as part of my daughter's birthday
Posted by OldPro, Thu Feb-17-11 12:21 PM
Man it would have been cool if you had got tickets... I just know I'm going to be the oldest one there by at least 8 years lol

She wants BBQ beforehand so I think I'll hit up Everett Jones down in Jack London.

I just realized that 19th street BART station is right around the corner from the Fox... I think I'll take the train in.

And yeah, BART isn't a bad idea. Shoot, even park at MacArthur BART and take it down one stop.

I didn't even think I was going to make it through on the phone, I called on a humbug just while I was "waiting" for Noon to hit, and got through on the first try.

Ah well, I'm not sure whether I want to blame Prince or Ticketmaster for making this difficult. It's probably both their fault.

"Graham Central Station" was the opening act (don't know if there were any other O.G. members of the group up there besides Larry Graham). They were solid, but shit didn't really get real until Oaktown-native Graham did his extended bass solo. They finished with an extended Sly and the Family Stone medley, then left the stage, only to have Prince come out. He launched into "Mountains," then finished off the set (with Graham making his way back to the stage) with really dope renditions of "Everyday People" and "Take You Higher."

Then there was a 20-minute break. Then Prince took the stage for real, launching into a medly of "Uptown," "Raspberry Beret," "Cream," Time's "Cool," and "Let's Work." What made it REALLY dope was Shiela E. being up there on stage with him; she played her ass off. After finishing off with "U Got the Look," he left the stage, and then Sheila did "Glamorous Life" for dolo, which was one of the best parts of the performance.

Anyway, then Prince takes the stage again, followed by Carlos Santana, who does "Soul Sacrifice" and rips it. Then the back-up singers got some shine, doing a few solo numbers. Then Prince and Sheila E. did a duet of "Love Bizarre" (again, banging) and followed it up with "Controversy." He finished off the "set" with "Purple Rain," which had the crowd going absolutely bananas.

The first encore was like 30-45 minutes, with him doing "Kiss" and "If I Was Your Girlfriend," and then finishing it was a slow jam set ("Insatiable," "Scandalous," and "Adore.") He come out for one more encore, doing "Bambi" and "Welcome 2 America." It was a little bit of an anticlimax ending the show with a song most people probably hadn't heard before. Part of my thinks he was planning a third encore, but since the show started late (Graham Central Station was still doing their soundcheck when they opened the doors), it ended late, and I suspect the Oracle Arena was happy about paying cats for overtime.

So yeah, it was REALLY dope. Eaisly one of the top three or five shows I've ever been too. I'll say this: for someone who apparently has a bum hip, that little motherfucka can move. He didn't do the splits or anything, but he did just about everything else. And as I mentioned before, Sheila E. was one of the extra highlights of the show. That woman played her ass off, and, if I may be so shallow, looked damn fine while doing it. Shoot, I don't care if she's 55, she looks smoking. And, more importantly, she's still got it musically.
2514978, Thanks for the break down
Posted by OldPro, Tue Feb-22-11 12:19 PM

Only downside to these shows is you're not going to get anywhere near the supporting cast or acts the NYC shows did which I think is lame. Outside of that, everyone who I have spoken with who attended Monday's show absolutely loved it.

Ha. I'll take Sheila E. onstage for the entire act (with her singing "Glamorous Life" on her own and then "Love Bizarre" with Prince), plus Carlos Santana, plus Larry Graham, PLUS sing "Everyday People" and "I Want to Take You Higher" over Cee-Lo and Janelle Monae everyday of the week and three times on Sunday. I can see the Cee-Lo and Monae whenever they decide to tour ago. Sheila E. playing with Prince? Notsomuch.

dope. i'll be there tonight. can't fucking wait.

did he bring any special guests on stage?
2516200, yea
Posted by __Spread__, Thu Feb-24-11 12:23 PM
Sheila E did Glamorous Life toward the beginning and pretty much stayed out there on Timbales, singing or dancing the whole rest of the show...she even got on the drum kit and played drums for Purple Rain during one of the encores...
Larry Graham and GCS were there of course and Cynthia and Jerry were playing horns with him and when Prince was on he called them all up along with Greg Errico and they did a little Sly medley...for a minute it seemed like they were gonna get Sly out there but that was just my wishful thinking...I woulda lost it...I almost lost it and then they were like "Greg Errico!" and I was happy to see him but, ya know, Sly would've tore the roof off...
Prince was talking about Santana earlier in the show making me think I'd see Carlos but he never showed as far as I know...I'd find it hard to believe if Santana wasn't there tonight...I bet he will be...I'm almost considering going again but i doubt good tix are left and I got some shit I have to do in the City this evening so I might just hang over there in hopes he does an afterset in SF...

but guests or no guests the shit is worth it...and he's got this grand piano out on stage but when he plays it, its gonna blow your mind because it isn't just a normal piano...
2516234, Fuck all yall

I called my daughter a little while ago and told her to be ready when I get off. She said "For what"? I told her "To go see Prince"... She said Don't play about 3 times.. then shut up another 2-3 times.... once she realized I wasn't joking she let out a scream lol. It's almost better I did it like this.... she was sure we weren't going.

yep...its a great setup

>
>2. What time did the show end?
he played two encores...I was on the Richmond bart by 11:45...the show prolly ended around 11:15-20...his first exit was about 10:30-45...he got started around 9:05 or so...well over 2 solid hours of music

eh...wasn't trying to f with the lines...one thing i do know its expensive...garlic fries smelled pretty bomb though...8 bucks for buds, 10 for import beer, 12 bucks for a large...once i shelled out 12 bucks in the beer line i said 'fuck it' to the food

2516365, Thanks man

Yep. He paid attention to all four sides, but paid the MOST attention the front and what I guess would be his left.

>2. What time did the show end?

I got out around 11:15/11:20. Back in the BART parking lot by like 11:40.

>3. How is the food at Oracle? Looks like Im going to be eating
>dinner at the arena.

As said above, pricey. I got something right when I walked in. And in the section I was in, the conession stands were kind of "separated" from the rest of the arena, so the lines weren't as long. But shit was expensive. It cost $6.50 for a bottle of water, and like $9 for a turkey burger with chips on the side.
2516407, the food is always pricey.
Posted by BigSlickMick, Thu Feb-24-11 06:20 PM
they rape you at the concession stands. i have season tickets for the warriors, so i always try to eat before going to the game. it hurts paying so much for so-so stadium food. but i still can't help myself from getting a $11 brew or two or three.
2516408, I hate Cali concessions
Posted by OldPro, Thu Feb-24-11 06:30 PM
I thought it was like that everywhere until I went to other ballparks in Seattle, Phoenix, & Denver. In Denver they sell food right out in front of the park and let you take it in... In Phoenix they have Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway etc inside the stadium with prices just slightly higher than the normal prices at those spots.

Cali and New York seem to be the worst places for concessions.

2516736, See, that's why I parked in the Colleseum BART parking lot
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Feb-25-11 01:09 PM
I figured taking the BART there and back would be kind of a pain, but parking in the BART lot and walking over the bridge and past the "Net" seemed easy enough. And free. I could see how traffic getting out of the Oracle lot was going to be a mess.

what did I just see last night........ I'm still not sure it's sunk in

I've seen dude 7 times now and that was easily the best show Ive seen from Prince or anyone. (The overly long Sly set was the only flaw to me)

Just shy of 3 hours.... 4 encores. The last one came as a total surprise since the house lights were up and about half the place was empty. My daughter was in line to get a shirt and we heard Let's Work kick in... my daughter summed it up when she looked at me and said "He's going crazy". He followed that up with a funky ass version of U Got the Look before finally sending the rest of us home drained but happy.

And hood thanks for not spoiling the "piano". That was great and dude really looked like he was having fun. It really helped bring P history into the show... almost everyone I talked to cited that part as the highlight. But damn that arrangement of LRC ... Kiss too. So much that as I said I have to let it sink in before I say much more.

we missed the last encore. i wish we would have stayed for that.

that was easily one of the best shows i've attended. this guy is a showman. he had the oracle jumping. prince's crowd control is amazing. he had the crowd in the palm of his hand. i also appreciated the way he used the whole stage.

sheila e is still looking hot. she killed it on the drums.

and prince's blouse game in on point. he almost had me wanting to rock that gold blouse. those furry boots were off the hook too.

and how did he happen to pull the finest woman in oakland on stage? that chick was bad!

what section were you in... we were up in 230 row 10. Not a bad vantage point at all actually and the ticket was only 47 (plus that damn 17.50 handling fee)

Did you see the big tittied sista that had her jammies pop out during cool? They had her on the big screen and everything... the look on P's face when he walked by her was priceless lol

my first big arena show

came in with high expectations and he still exceeded them.
pleasantly surprised when he pulled out "she's always in my hair."
i was only familiar w/ half the songs maybe, but that didn't matter.
his showmanship, musicianship and sheer funkiness was so remarkable.

and seeing larry graham playing the bass line for "thank you (falettin me be mice elf again)" live in the flesh is not something i'll soon forget.
(sidenote: why was he dressed like a black mage from final fantasy tactics? http://www.creativeuncut.com/gallery-04/art/fft-black-mage-male.jpg )

what made this series of shows sound so good... There were no horns. Instead of relying on Maceo and other horn players to cover some of the synth parts they were all played they way early 80s P would have played them. It really takes shit like Controversy, Kiss and Cool to another level.

because yes, THAT sound is what makes Prince music "Prince music".
at least for those particular songs.

I don't think that would work for a song like "Adore" or some of his post-'80s material that doesn't use synths.

but there are but a few songs that don't sound right when played with actual horns.

2517921, I just found out Prince got the purple piano from someone...
Posted by mrhood75, Mon Feb-28-11 11:47 AM
...in my building. Or, to be exact, a former resident in my loft complex. This apparently happened a months before he started the recent "tour." The dude took the piano, tricked it out, and painted it purple. I don't know how Prince found out about it, but he did, and got in contact with dude, telling him he was going to pick it up at 2 a.m. He of course showed up instead at 2 p.m. the preceding afternoon, so no one would be waiting around for him. Good to see Prince hitting up Bay cats to keep his show popping.
2517924, So did he buy it or just rent it?
