Demdike Stare.

Just got their triple cd Tryptych. It combines three vinyl eps from last year with bonus material. This stuff is basically a dream come true for me. Sample-based dark ambient with beats. Spooky stuff, but not in a cheesy way, or for that matter an overly disturbing way. They go a lot of directions, but I'd say think of DJ Shadow's Hindsight off Preemptive Strike. More decayed, much less hip hop (no Roy Ayers breaks here), but a similar vibe.

Of course the beats are broken up with straight drones and noise, but all of it's rhythmic. I know these guys are getting lumped in with Salem and witch house or whatever, (and the occult is certainly a big part of what they draw from) but this is something much more disciplined and patient.

It's a lot of music to sift though, but damn if this isn't some of my favorite electronic-ish stuff I've heard in a long time.

Here's a few songs that show their style and range.

as much as i enjoyed that 500+ post topic last year, it did prevent some of you from making new topics about specific artists, releases, and even genres that would have got the usual 3 or 4 people in there talking. maybe individual topics that fizzle out after a day and <10 replies are better than a reply that gets glossed over in a gigantic thread. certainly no one is restricting their conversations about other types of new music to one thread.

>Demdike Stare.

you make it sound really good, so thanks, and i'll check it out.

i'm glad you said that because so much of that "witchhouse" stuff is really cheap and obvious even if not necessarily bad.

I'm more excited to check this out than ever, watched the hashashim chant video the other day and was feeling it, from what I recall it seemed a lot more frenetic than anything on the previous cd -I'm glad to hear the good words, sounds like it might be a step ahead of previous? I had been a little disappointed that their recent releases were vinyl only, impacting my ability to listen, so happy about this release. You've assured this should my next purchase, thanks for the sample selections...

What I ordered instead of Demdike Stare this pay period was a re-release of three albums by Thomas Köner on the Type label. I wasn't familiar with him, but apparently an ambient artist who made his mark in the early 90s, using processed organic sounds like slowed-down gongs. The clear high regard and descriptions of 'dark ambient' together with youtube samples encouraged me to check, although weather has prevented me from receiving as of yet (though it would have been appropriate for being snowed in):

It occurs to me how common of a musical theme it really is, snow & ice brings out certain moods... I also keep thinking about this post-surgery photo I saw last year of a guy's toes that were all clipped off due to untreated frost bite, all lined up in a row, unexplored inspiration for winter music.

I noticed those Köner reissues. They sound really great and are definitely on my list. But I think my next ambient purchase will be Alva Noto Xerox 2.

Very cool about the slowed down gongs. I discovered a cool ambient noise recently. For the holidays we had a bowl filled with jingle bells on the coffee table. I noticed when you picked it up and moved it slowly, they created this very light rustle that was somewhere between rain falling and wind blowing through trees. I'll have to see if my USB mic can pick it up.

that's awesome and ridiculous at the same time, and I don't mean that in any insulting way. just the sort of thing that needs to be included in the description of the release of this as-yet-unreleased track, which I'm sure will be wedded to a loftier concept e.g. a failed historical expedition, chinese mythology, etc. :)

i was into his music a decade ago but lost interest in and track of him as time went on and he ventured into all kinds of other music

with him having joined soundcloud and begun unleashing new music, i've been listening, and most of it is pretty amazing, very violent, dark, and primordial, and well worth checking out, especially since it's available to download as well

on the 'tall dark and handcuffed' album and maybe elsewhere

that was when i really started to o_O at the wild directions his music/career went since it was right after a couple great "IDM" albums, 'role model' and 'oops i did it again'

his forays into other musics, including rapping, haven't been bad at all from what i have listened to, but i guess at the time i wasn't enough of a fan of/believer in HIM to keep up with everything, so i tuned out for years

>My local record store always has a few of his albums that I'm
>tempted to give a try. Actual F**king, Being Ridden and

unfortunately no, although i've always wanted to hear the rest of 'being ridden' (have heard some), which wasn't long after he started jumping genres

if he puts an album out this year that isn't vinyl or digital purchase only i would happily buy it just based on these soundcloud freebies

my regret is never seeing him live because it seems like his shows were constantly evolving, almost like totally different performers, from what he's said and the reviews i've read

i also checked out 3 tracks from his last album, 'bataille royale' (2009), which is digital and vinyl only, unfortunately. pretty different from the soundcloud stuff but also really good and a great evolution from the early sound i'm more familiar with. these 3 tracks were one that was a very interesting/weird take on baltimore club music (he's a baltimore native and true fan of the genre, not an outsider getting a fake picture of what it's all about), one that was sort of modern minimal techno, and the other was a bit more general electronic with probably an old school house influence. i definitely want to hear more, but alas it's not in my fav format.

i also revisited a little of his old stuff, and one of his rap songs i hadn't listened to in at least 6 years sounded great, like a hybrid of mobb deep and anticon, something i'm sure i didn't appreciate at the time. i'll probably play catchup on some of the music i skipped.

i guess what i'm appreciating is the nuanced production and composition. he's approaching various styles of music and making them his and also really putting in a lot of unexpected detail.

NIN was never dead, he just didn't want to tour any more. that's cool that something is coming. i only expected the girl with the dragon tattoo soundtrack and maybe another how to destroy angels release. i gave up on waiting for a 2nd volume of the social network soundtrack since the film versions are up on the sony web site, and it's already been so many months. peter christopherson was supposed to remix or work with HTDA according to his last interview, which would've been amazing to hear. i wonder how far he got with the parts trent sent over. probably not very.

in my area, i've always had luck with cd/game exchange. it wouldn't have modern niche artists (maybe cex because he's local, but probably not), but i've picked up copies of albums i was never willing to pay full price for and all for decent to incredible prices for pretty much anyone who was a "name" in the '90s and early '00s. if i can find these, i'm sure NYC has a similar store somewhere. check yelp or something.

Kuniyuki Takahashi - Walking in the Naked City

Sometimes slow to catch up w/ albums on my wishlist, this is from 2010 just now finally bought it. He alternates between this and his Koss alias, the latter for more ambient-style projects. Under his birth name it tends to be labeled 'deep house' although that suggests something more danceable than what it usually is, organic-sounding electronic music. A few bars here and there suggests aimless improvisational noodling over percussive loops, but long term it becomes more clear that the music involves more gradual or subtle dynamics, jazz textures in electronic dance-derived forms, rather than electronic textures in jazz forms. Some of the tracks are heavier on atmospheric grooves rather than instrument-guided textures. Nice overall, I like this artist and feel he is getting better with time.

one of the more atmospheric tracks:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcWRv261sCw

Rise - Messages

Loop-and-sample-based album seemingly more in the hip-hop tradition in terms of composition, based around 60s/70s jazz, seemingly the underground Sun-Ra/community-minded/spiritual type - lots of inspirational quotes and speeches are interspersed from various musicians and related figures, music and ideas make for a united-feeling album, like a tribute to the time. Some of the percussion is more consistent with break-beat-derived, head-nodding material, but not afraid to build off of percussive loops that are not overtly dance-oriented. Pianos, horns, etc., contemplative moods.

opening track (not counting a brief spoken segment):

Pretty fcking phenomenal. It wasn't until I got there that I realized there would be no visuals. Just a dark theatre. It took a minute for it to set in, but eventually it was perhaps one of the most engaging listening experiences i've had in a while.

While Demdike's piece wasn't the best (that'd go to Bryan Jacobs) it was absolutely incredible hearing them in loud suround sound like that. Apparently it was the first time they had worked in 5.1. Here's hoping the next release follows the format.

It's like they were directly inside my head when they conceived this project. I've really grown to love the ECM label in last few years, and thought so much of it sounds compatible with modern electronic music.

(didn't know where else to put this; it probably doesn't warrant its own post)

the music is not particulary complex; he just layers some woozy synth lines on top of each other over 4-to-the-floor kicks but it's pretty effective and catchy. i guess it's the quality of the sounds themselves and the melodies that makes it work. maybe?

the title track is just sublime

i've noticed that i get sucked into some songs without realizing it. i'll get distracted by the weird textures he creates with those vocal hiccups, not really "feeling" the song and wondering what it's all leading up to then suddenly i'm waist deep in the song and finding it very beautiful

Posted by bearfield, Sat Nov-19-11 12:14 AM
he has some cuts on the "best of tectonic" double album from earlier this year (of which the 2nd disc is basically about 1/2 of pinch's fact mix) that i really like; the way his tracks are construced is really intriguing to me (the percussion in particular i find very interesting). i find them very finely observed and fussed over

is it worth listening to?

Posted by bearfield, Wed Nov-23-11 12:32 AM
it's cold, amelodic, it *moves* (i love the percussion), and the album as a whole flows very nicely. no real "bad" tracks. it also recalls and/or incorporates a lot of styles: drum n bass, garage, dubstep, techno, house but manages to stay pretty cohesive

'relapse' makes me think of go plastic/ultravisitor-era squarepusher gone dub. it's nuts, but in a subdued way. that probably doesn't make any sense but it's a standout track anyway
2631442, thanks for the tip :)

my apologies, as this is really better suited to an old topic of mine that got deleted, but:

Lou Rhodes (of Lamb) "doesn't think she will ever return to electronica. 'Music goes in cycles - you reach the highest point in one cycle and then it bursts in to a whole new one. I think dance music and dance-based technological music has just been done to death. It's funny, because all those electronic producers who are used to writing very beautiful instrumental music suddenly want to write songs now, but because they come from a completely different tradition they can't do it. Just putting vocals over the top doesn't make it a song.'" -The Guardian, Thursday 2 March 2006 < http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2006/mar/03/werejammin >

2651872, the lego feet reissue
Posted by howisya, Sun Jan-22-12 06:05 PM
now having heard twice as much from this era as before, i can say pretty confidently that this and the "cavity job" single are the sound of autechre before they were deeply influenced by the ambient music that was so big in the early to mid '90s and informed what came to be called IDM, including the first few autechre releases on warp. here, they are pretty strictly in acid, hardcore techno ("rave"), and (electro) hip-hop mode, and it's awesome.

EDIT: also, if you enjoy the lego feet sound, the orbital and meat beat manifesto releases from the same time are worth your while. i'm pretty sure that's a MBM 12" cover shown in the studio photo in the album art.

similar to lego feet? the early stuff:
1989 Storm the Studio
1990 Armed Audio Warfare
1990 99%
1992 Satyricon
1997 (but mostly much earlier recordings) Original Fire
if you do like those, there are later archival releases of more early material and even a new release in similar early style

that said, my favorite is 1998 Actual Sounds + Voices, which is different sounding than what we're talking about

during the time when i was rediscovering* his music, i was also in the beginning stages of a phase when i didn't want to share new music in the lesson because i felt like nobody noticed or cared (now i just do it anyway because it's funny to me and i can tell myself at least i tried, even if i do bury everything in an old topic). one of those artists goes by the name Sidney Looper and for the last couple years has made juke/footwork. GumDrops is my guy, he was always on the electronic music tip long before it caught on here, so i couldn't help but share it with him: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2542176&mesg_id=2542176&listing_type=search#2629376 (you can see i recently recanted and said who it was, again into the deep vacuum of space). (one place i was generous with sharing his music was the listening room, http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2561116&mesg_id=2561116&listing_type=search , to the point that i got clowned a little for playing so much of it, but it was mostly well received.) now, to my ears, this chicagoan is just as enjoyable as anyone in juke/footwork, and more than that, he brings experimental, industrial, IDM, and just plain fun and wacky elements to the somewhat codified juke sound that i really appreciate. he also makes other kinds of music and does remixes, blends, and edits. most of the music is still on his soundcloud for free download. most of it is juke, and i strongly encourage anyone who likes that to check out his page, but also check out this collaboration with smojulation under the duo name eluqtrix:
https://soundcloud.com/sidneylooper/eluqtrix-dead-qowboy (banger IMO)

*i once posted about his "Share This Ecstasy." he made it in 2007, but i discovered it (and this artist) accidentally in 2009. you see, i had this idea in college circa 2004 (rare peek into the notebook of young travis):
Sample ironically:
Michael Jackson - Baby Be Mine "And we can share this ecstasy / As long as we believe in love"
much to my chagrin, in my laziness in getting around to making music, someone had beaten me to this idea a few years later before i could do it. i couldn't even be mad because i discovered an artist on the same wavelength who isn't scared to be prolific and share his music even if it's not noticed much (but don't let that deter you, check him out).
