2065015, too kitsch
Posted by howisya, Fri Apr-17-09 05:07 PM
i know everyone around the blogosphere is raving (no pun intended) about it, but the silly dubstep synths and ragga chatter take away from the song for me. the original slays. first of all, that's a good team: mark bell, matthew herbert, brian chippendale, and thom yorke. second, bjork should sing in icelandic for a while. having gained a little too much insight into her english language lyric writing methods, i imagine she probably writes more meaningful songs in her native tongue, and anyway, she sounds great singing in it. some of my favorite songs on 'medulla' weren't in english. there was a project she started a few years ago of rewriting and singing all her songs in icelandic, but i guess that was scrapped.

i do like switch, and this is a cool remix for what it is.
2065148, hmmmmm
Posted by imcvspl, Fri Apr-17-09 07:54 PM
honestly i barely hear it as a remix. for me its like a new song that samples bjork. in fact you could remove the bjork bits and let it stand on its own to my ears.

i'm less impressed with the remix as with the attention to detail on the production. it's like a flawless execution. *shrug* there's enough going on and constantly changing to keep me in it, which is more than a lot of dubstep does for me. though i have to say, as i'm going back and listening to more and more i'm becoming more of a fan.

all of that said, the original is of course the biznezz. for all the reasons you detail. if you had posted this thread when it originally dropped i would have named it.

that's not uncommon for remixes, especially in the 2000s, though.

>in fact you could remove the bjork
>bits and let it stand on its own

it might even sound better. bjork over a trendy dubstep track just sounds weird to me. bjork over trendy house music sounded natural, but back then, bjork was a lot more connected to what was mainstream, or rather what was popular underground music. today, she's a genre unto herself more than ever. that's why it was funny when she worked with timbaland NOW as opposed to 10 years earlier. bjork had become just too bjork for it to really work.

Just because it's a 100% perfect (old-school) death metal composition regardless of the retarded title. No, it's not original in the slightest but it's dope as fuck in every regard and doesn't sound THAT derivative either. Anyway, it's on thier myspace: http://www.myspace.com/soultribulation as well as on their fabulous debut-album...

Old Song:Bram Tchaikovsky-Can't give you reasons(1980) (EDIT:The "any" I originally wrought don't belong in the title): Just a perfect power-pop-song that preceded Weezer's style with almost two decades and managed to sound better IMO. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a link of this one but it's on their largely wack "the russians are coming"-album from 1980 which, at least here in sweden, is the type of record you'll find for about $0.5-$1. Don't know about its value in the states but this song at least makes it worth about $3 even if (most of) the rest of the album is ass...

Another banger from the same band though (from their otherwise VASTLY superior debut, not the type of song that makes me lose my mind thugh, just a good pop/rock-tune from a could-have-been-great band)Sarah Smiles (1979): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIXR9d-7I1Q&feature=PlayList&p=DB6FDC12685078A5&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=36:

It's actually the same riff/melody as the mid-section so, no, it's not a transition, it's a coda that's a repetition of a previously featured melody. The next (read:last) song starts like pure old shcool swedish death metal worship almost immediately...
>
>i like all 3 songs, although since you set up the comparison,

The thing is that about half of Bram Tchaikovsky's songs were boogie-rock/pub-rock songs so when they actually wrote "pop"-songs (like 30-40% of their material) it was almost an afterthought. Maybe that has coloured my opinion on their songs but really, I think their pop-songs were dope as fuck and actually influential as way (honestly, I used this thread to prop them up) but they are not a great band as a whle; the debut is good but the next album has FAR too much pub-rock...

It's the same thing with the Motors: You might know (and dig) this track:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKvFhnvFcls but a large portion of their albums were just pure pub-rock...

Posted by Jakob Hellberg, Fri Apr-17-09 05:36 PM
...is because Bram Tchaikovsky is a spin-off from that band so I just used that as an "excuse" sort off (LOL!). Anyway, neither of those bands are exactly classic british rock bands and the music they represent has been overshadowed by both punk, post-punk and new romantic/synth pop but the fact is that they made some dope songs and I've actually collected the british pub-rock/new wave/power-pop cross-over (believe me, it's NOT an expensive habit!) and I honestly think it's dope sometimes...

That said, it sounds like something he may have written more for himself than the audience. Maybe that's why it's just accompanied by piano.

I think I have heard the James version before. However, I didn't mean that I literally had heard a song like this before - rather the idea presented. I mean, I know all ideas and songs can't be unique, but I didn't feel what he had to say was all that remarkable.

anyway, i respect your

I had to YouTube this b/c I'd never heard it before. Interestingly, this song sounds more (to me) like they are portraying a character rather than themselves. (Unlike the Newman song which comes across fairly sincere.) I don't know much about XTC, but the song comes off a little theatrical, so I can't buy that they truly believe this. But they are still willing to present the idea.

yeah, i know. it did get me to thinking about it though so i searched and saw a prominent cover version that i didn't know about, so i thought i'd ask.

>I mean, I know all ideas and

fair enough, and i wouldn't use the word remarkable myself, as these are questions we all have to or at least should ask ourselves about our faith and beliefs, but i really like the lyrics and the whole aura of the song.

>I had to YouTube this b/c I'd never heard it before.

what?! nah, sometimes i have to remind myself how idiosyncratic the rock station i grew up listening to (WHFS) was.

boards of canada's 'geogaddi' :) a minute in it sounds like that flying lotus mr. oizo "stunt" remix (i guess it's actually a version of onra's "robots"... you start to see why i'm not really a big fan of all these nu-electronica artists). what is this anyway, assorted outtakes stitched together?

anyway, when i loaded the page, the tracts started playing in a different order, but it's a good sign that everything's been enjoyable so far.

"sitting back" is cool, like an ambient wash of chopped up '80s pop r&b...

Yeah, the last couple of new tracks he's added on his page (Change of Heart, Long Distance Love) have been in that vein, which I find neat.

"My Comet" is still the jewel, tho.

(I do like the song you posted)

....if you were politely pointing out that what Onra's doing isn't all that novel of an idea, I still prefer his "thicker" way he goes about it, plus the way the vocal samples are mixed (that wobbly effect.....most noticeable on "Change of Heart"......the way the word "heart" sounds).

But of course, I appreciate your opinion, which is why I posted it.

Here are some other opinions on the man Lone, btw:

"With it's lovingly crafted textures and sun-stroke melodies (not to mention deliciously dope drums) the album seemed to encapsulate the sound of forgotten childhood holidays, utilizing faded lounge-esque samples sounding like they had been lifted from warped cassettes which had spent too much time out in the sun on a car's dashboard".

Perfect^.

"If it had a smell, it'd be seaweed on the breeze. If it had a taste, it'd be saltwater. If it had a texture, it'd be scratchy coral. 'Sea Spray' is about as fitting a title as you could get for a Lemurian track. As well as filling your ears with faded loungey chords, bursts of weathered VHS stings and Hawaiian musical postcards, Lemurian is caked with the thickest punchiest soulfully- shuffled hip hop beats that would satisfy anyone who simply has to nod their head to enjoy themselves. This is also daydream music, you can't listen to it without going off somewhere. Personally, I slip into the daydream of being sucked into the 80s arcade game 'Outrun' and tearing around a looped pixellated parallel to Miami or some other palm-tree-avenued sea front, with Lemurian pumping out of the car stereo of course."

:-)

The funny thing with both of these is my reaction is the same, especially in regards to daydreams or childhood memories. His stuff takes me back to England in the summer, riding trains to London or walking around Peterborough.

i think that the value of nostalgia in making us appreciate music (more) isn't to be underestimated; unfortunately, the only mental association i get listening to lone is OKPs such as yourself recommending it and my own impression of the music (BoC ripoff). anyway, i'm content to remain in the quiet minority of opinion on him, but i do keep an open mind when i hear something new by him.

http://www.last.fm/music/Charlene/_/I%27ve+Never+Been+to+Me?autostart

Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream about the things you'll never do
But, I wish someone had talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you.....

Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me

Please lady, please lady, don't just walk away
'Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived million lies....

Oh, I've been to Niece and the Isle of Greece while I've sipped champagne on a yacht
I've moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things that a woman ain't supposed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

SPOKEN:
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we'd like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It's that little baby you're holding, it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you're going to make love with tonight
That's truth, that's love......

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free
Hey lady......
I've been to paradise, (I've been to paradise)
But I've never been to me

(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to Neice and the isle of Greece while I've sipped champagne on a yacht)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to cryin' for unborn children that might have made me complete)
I've been to paradise, never been to me
(I've been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I've been to paradise, never been to me

Garfield "A Private Affair"

http://www.zshare.net/audio/63314737f4bcb789/

there's something about this that i like but can't quite put my finger on. dude (garfield?) sounds beyond mad emo; he sings like he's having a breakdown. i like the lyrics, particularly the refrain in the second half. i like the guitar. i don't even know what kind of song this is. it doesn't seem right to label it prog or psychedelic.

anyone?

The strings that come in... then the total switch up from the slow brooding 6/8 to 4/4 at 2:15-ish, I never liked Zero 7 from the bit I listened to but Mozez's voice is amazing on this, the mix is perfect, the just kinda "jamming" in the middle goes on for the perfect amount of time before you get sick of it, then back to the slow 6/8, the entire thing is just perfect to me.

Dare I say it reminds me of a less gloomy version of the trip-hop-soul-ish tracks on UNKLE's Psyence Fiction, but is just as good

Well that definitely makes the Aaron Jerome one quite a bit less impressive, but I still like it alot. As a cover I think they did it justice. I'm gonna have to check out that Terry Callier album just off the strength of that song

>the song was sampled on that album

Hmm didn't realize that obviously, but I meant the entire drums and vocals and overall production and sound as well

Did you check for the Terry Callier one because you read it in the UNKLE production credits? + Had you heard the Aaron Jerome/Mozez one?

cool. i need to revisit that song and album. i didn't take to the studio version of the song initially. also, when i first heard the debut live performance of the song some years earlier than that, i thought it sounded kind of generic and boring, like dashboard confessional or some other then-current "emo indie rock" like that. it was just the structure of a whiny voice over acoustic guitars though (which is weird because there are acoustic radiohead songs i love, but this version isn't one of them). the full band version is so much better and actually has a very nice groove to it.

I've heard the song and even have a copy of the record, I think. But I hadn't listened to the record in two years, and my brother put this song on a mix for me. I still haven't gotten past it on the mix, I just keep listening to this one over & over.

(Link forthcoming in a few hours)

as far as i know it hasn't been released as a single; i heard it on dubstep allstars vol. 7 disc 1 (DJ CHEF!). perhaps that's why I like it so much. the mix pretty much stops before the track comes in and it only plays for a minute or so before the next track is blended in. maybe only hearing the part of the song that the dj deems is best is altering my perception (it's a really good mix btw)

anyway, it's dubstep (half-step?) perfection: punishing bass, every sound in each bar serving to accentuate the impact of the snare on the 3, an awesome distorted flute (or empty jug) on the upbeat. it's completely retarded & i can't get enough of it

i'd like to hear the full track as well. on his album "city limits vol, 1", silkie develops his tracks well, with tons of layers, good phrasing, nice melodies, beat/bass drops, etc. it's a great album and it's a testament to silkie's talent that he creates 6-8 minutes dubstep tracks that are very listenable. i read one review that describes his tracks as "dubstep as viewed through a telescope" and i think that's right on the money

>btw, wb.

2337195, why
Posted by Robert, Sun Mar-14-10 12:24 PM
(and this applies to the whole album)

i've recorded in a studio before, and my opinion is nothing tops the energy in the first take. of course, the first take has the most mistakes... so while you're re-recording/overdubbing/whatever, the energy is slowly just getting sucked out.

'bee thousand' sounds like the entire thing was recorded in one take. like they were like "fuck it, the guitar part completely dropped out there but we'll leave it as is". it's ugly & shineless, but it's also kinda beautiful? (it actually reminds me a little of cody chestnutt's 'headphone masterpiece') and in spite of whatever shitty equipment used to record it, the melodies come through. "tractor rape chain" is possibly my fave tune on there, but that could easily change.

2336312, Ok, in response to our friend howisya's suggestion below:
Posted by Ishwip, Fri Mar-12-10 11:38 AM
The way elements of the song seem to be fumbling and folding on top of each other is too ill to me.

Anyways, some specifics:

1. Listen to what the snare does from :21 to 28, the one's around :24 and :27 specifically. I'm a fan of stuff like that, where for whatever reason, the producer f's up a drum or sample or something just once and then never does it again for the rest of the song.

2. The hook, with the "it felt so good" and "oh" fighting to be heard, getting pulled, twisted, and smashed all over the place. Son, yes.

3. That bassline is nice and thick.

4. The overall warmth and layered feel of the track. Put on a good pair of headphones or listen on a good stereo and there's a lot going on in the background you might not catch initially.

5. Best moment: 1:22, when he sings "I'm sorry I couldn't name the color of your eyes" and then that wave of "baby" and some sound I can't really pindown, might be strings or synths, all wash over his extended "eyeeeeeeeeess".

6. And yes, of course, the spectacular compression. :)

Favorite song from my favorite album this year so far.

SO ahead of its time and dope as well:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj7D4qTS-ig

This song was apparently released as early as 79 on a 7" single of early 70's outtakes and it also appeared on "the last album" comp in the 80's. The reason I didn't hear it until now is because it did not appear on the "71 minutes of Faust" CD which combined ''last album'' and ''munich and elsewhere'' but deleted one song each from each album.

I knew the record wasn't complete but I didn't know the songs left out were this dope until now... Sometimes I wonder if there's ANYTHING the kraut-rockers didn't help innovate in the context of modern music...
