i don't think phil is highly praised as a drummer, but i think consensus is he's at least adequate and not a detriment to the band. i've always enjoyed him and consider him one of my favorite drummers, but that's mostly an extension of him drumming on a lot of my favorite music. still, i think songs like the dj shadow-influenced "airbag" highlight some skill and creativity on his part.

my point was that at least the 3 guitarists in the band, especially jonny and ed, are considered--by some, obviously not all--to be among the best. i see them listed pretty often in those kinds of lists. of course it's up for debate, but they are recognized for musicianship and not just the songwriting.
