I’m not linking it because it’s from twitter, but Raekwon was at Palantir’s offices. If I had an Immobilarity CD, maybe I’d go outside and give him the chance to spy on me frisbeeing that bullshit.

Cats can rap about selling drugs all day but investing in Palantir is the bridge too far to cross.

But once you consider the relevant context, they're two very different things.

13528318, Of course they are very different things. What they share are... Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Aug-31-26 04:00 PM
They are both morally reprehensible things, done for money.
Why are we shocked/surpirsed the person who sold drugs to make money would invest in Palantir to make money? Or own an AI company? Or side with the NFL versus Kap.
And I am not coming at you personally, but I always find it funny when people are shocked that cats who dealt drugs or rhymed about dealing drugs and other crimes do other greedy, capitalistic things.
I think it's hypocrisy to only now be turned off by these guys when they told you all along who they are.
That's my only point.

13528330, I’ve never been a fan of drug dealing unless it was weed Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Sep-01-26 11:40 AM
or mushrooms..
I never knew Rae when he was selling drugs but I would frown on anyone selling crack, coke, heroin, ect to our people
now, I believe what you are trying to imply is bumping Rae’s purple tape is the same as celebrating drug dealing. This would make no sense at all and would be like shaming folks for liking Scarface, a horror movie, or an audio book about selling drugs.
|
13528334, That's not what I am saying. Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Sep-01-26 03:36 PM

This >would make no sense at all and would be like shaming folks for >liking Scarface, a horror movie, or an audio book about >selling drugs.
My point is that people seemed shocked when a person who used to sell drugs invests in questionable legal companies.
My point is that people took offense at someone for investing in Palantir but never voiced offense at that same person for drug dealing.
Seems arbitrary to me.

13528335, Like legs already said, no one's "shocked." Posted by Brew, Tue Sep-01-26 03:40 PM
But we are, and reserve the right to be, disgusted by it.
Furthermore, how can you be so sure no one here has ever voiced displeasure about Rae rapping about dealing drugs ? I'd argue that many of us here have expressed our exhaustion with coke rap on multiple occasions. Maybe/maybe not about Rae specifically, but I know for a fact multiple people here (myself included, most likely) have complained about, for example, Clipse's overreliance on coke raps. Specifically Pusha T.
Lastly, as many of us have already outlined, when considering the context it is not *at all* unreasonable or arbitrary to be more upset by a 50+yo millionaire investing in (and partnering directly with) a massive surveillance system like Palentir than we were at a teenager rapping about finding a way to make money in the hood by dealing drugs (and subsequently, getting out of the hood by rapping).

13528339, Without Googling, can you tell me what Palantir actually does? Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Wed Sep-02-26 01:40 PM
And in all honest I didn't really know until I went down the rabbit hole last week. After learning, I am pretty sure a lot of people outraged by Palantir actually knows what they do.
Not saying the outrage isn't deserved, but folks should know what they are outraged about know who else deserves that outrage.

|
13528356, RE: Even with hindsight Posted by seasoned vet, Thu Sep-03-26 11:32 AM
as morally reprehensible as a pawn shop right outside a casino, same thing
they are both profiting off someones addiction
one, we dont even blink an eye the other causes pearl clutching whether it is or not (morally reprehensible), i could not care less, its what the customer wants
ill worry about if its right or not on a case by case basis
i had an uncle i used to sell to this uncle wasnt taking care of his kids or home instead of me watching him throw money away, i sold to him and used the money he gave me to clothe and feed his kids when i sold dope it was it was very much so a business transaction i didnt sell $5 and $10 pieces of rock on a stoop or corner to a walking zombie i sold $50 and $100 pieces to an extended family of yt folks with good jobs that preferred crack i was that dude like Dangelo on The Wire that asked Bodie why cant we just sell the shit and walk away without all the violence and bad treatment

>as morally reprehensible as a pawn shop right outside a >casino, same thing > >they are both profiting off someones addiction > >one, we dont even blink an eye >the other causes pearl clutching >
Nah it's levels to it that's why some get a pass. >whether it is or not (morally reprehensible), i could not care >less, its what the customer wants >
That's a bad take. The customer is an addict with no self control.
>ill worry about if its right or not on a case by case basis > >i had an uncle i used to sell to >this uncle wasnt taking care of his kids or home >instead of me watching him throw money away, i sold to him and >used the money he gave me to clothe and feed his kids >
That's like a short term fix to justify enabling someone.
>when i sold dope it was it was very much so a business >transaction >i didnt sell $5 and $10 pieces of rock on a stoop or corner to >a walking zombie >i sold $50 and $100 pieces to an extended family of yt folks >with good jobs that preferred crack > >i was that dude like Dangelo on The Wire that asked Bodie why >cant we just sell the shit and walk away without all the >violence and bad treatment > >
Even without the violence you still end up with destruction and damage.

13528321, allegedly selling drugs to get by as a teenager Posted by DJR, Mon Aug-31-26 08:38 PM
and making an incredibly cinematic album where selling drugs is a main theme as a young man isn’t really the same thing as running cameras surveilling everybody in these fucked up times. I don’t think they’re just going to catch “the bad guys”. Do you?
Also, young Rae didn’t create the conditions to where teenagers/young men felt they had to sell drugs to get money in the 80s-early 90s. The people running Palintir, Flock, etc. and their ancestors created those conditions though, and they all profit from the pain of the people just trying to survive it all.
I can think of a few reasons to get with Palintir- sabotage and to get their money and spread it around to people who need it, and to slap the dogshit out of Peter Thiel, and that is about it. Profiting off of their fucked up practices is something else though. Peter Thiel is like one of those fucked up Inspector Gadget ass cartoon character villains. But he’s real.
|
13528325, ^ this was exactly what I was getting @ above. Posted by Brew, Tue Sep-01-26 09:05 AM
And to answer Buddy's response, I think the reason it's disappointing is that you'd hope a man in his 50s worth millions of dollars may decide not to take part in the destruction of his fellow humans just for money, whereas a teenager with no money and no options can be excused for not understanding how destructive his money-seeking behavior is.
|
13528327, Agreed, and also…. Posted by DJR, Tue Sep-01-26 10:53 AM

not condoning selling drugs by any means, but selling something to somebody who wants to buy it(even though it’s fucked up when people have addictions) is quite a bit different than monitoring people who don’t want to be monitored. Nobody signed up for this.

13528341, I'm assuming Raekwon isn't a luddite Posted by Numba_33, Wed Sep-02-26 03:40 PM
and is fully aware of how embedded Palantir is with the current military industrial complex and how literal bloodshed and death is lining his stock portfolio.
It's entirely possible dude is a right leaning hawkish dude in terms of the international politics. Pretty hard to imagine he isn't since it's glaringly obvious how Palantir makes its bones; even moreso if dude was an original investor and had no problem flashing his veneers when he visited the Palantir offices recently.

13528313, Where’s everybody’s cities/towns at on the Flock timeline? Posted by Oak27, Mon Aug-31-26 10:11 AM
My town put them in around the end of July. Not even sure when it was decided to put them up or who was a part of that decision, I only found out because I was on the DeFlock map and saw one right at the end of my street. I googled “<town name> flock” and all that came up was a Facebook post (I don’t have Facebook) from the town’s police department saying they were installed (comments disabled, plenty of negative emoji reactions).
They were gone within a month.
I’m sure they’ll be rebranded or some other surveillance company will move in when the temperature around Flock dies down.

one during his time spent as a petty hustler/dealer. We love those tales. But understand he was in his mid-20's when Wu got on. At this age the god's neck is hurting from all that panoramic movement. So this is probably a dream come true for him. Criminals love surveillance just as much the people who are paid to fight crime.
|
13528331, no.. what was cool was RZA’s beats and the flow Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Sep-01-26 11:46 AM
This is the problem with hip hop vs other forms of entertainment.
Every tale is 100% true when its rap but fiction when its TV or a movie.
Lastly, drug dealers usually hate cops unless they are working for them. Even then.. they usually despise that they have to pay that tax.
Palantir tho, that’s a bit different. They are watching everyone. I invested and made a little money off then but once I heard what they were about and heard the CEO talking crazy. I sold that shit. Same with Tesla and anyone else in my portfolio. If I hear they are doing shitty things and proud of it. I sell. Might be foolish but I don’t want that in my portfolio.

13528397, RE: C.R.E.A.M. (Cameras Record Everyone Around Me) Posted by 3CardMolly, Thu Sep-10-26 05:59 AM
Honestly we all invest in the destruction of others and ourselves with much less of a return on our investment. Doesn't make what Rae do right but it's way more upfront and profitable for him and that seems on brand for most Americans.
Unfortunately we're not the kind of society to fight evil beyond complaining or pointing fingers. On a slightly smaller scale of surveillance when red-light and speed light cameras were predatory in most urban areas, very very few physically fought back by spray painting or destroying those cameras. As usual we eventually gave in. That's not to say Rae is right but what's the counter to a billion dollar industry such as Palintir and why hasn't it been done yet?
Kudos to Mangione.
