13523366, Why is Beck giving tribute to Sly Stone for the R&RHallofFame? Posted by 3CardMolly, Sat Nov-08-25 09:31 PM
Aside from Loser (20+yrs ago) what else is he known for?

13523367, Cause Beck is that Dude Posted by Adwhizz, Sun Nov-09-25 07:13 AM
He was probably at the height of his fame and influence in 96 when "Odelay" dropped, but he's been steady putting out albums this whole time, won a handful of Grammys and has generally been well respected this whole time

13523369, I call bs Posted by 3CardMolly, Mon Nov-10-25 07:27 AM
Even if he has been dropping songs a day for the last 2 decades, there’s nothing about him that translates ‘oh yeah, lets get Beck to honor Sly Stone!’ Also from what I read, he’s not a behind the scenes producer to anyone and aside from Loser there’s nothing that stands out about his records.
But there seems to be a need to paint a picture of his connection to Black artist, the greats at that. From handing Prince his last award to this tribute to Sly, not to mention someone on twitter was trying to connect a working relationship with D’Angelo via photographs, no music.
That shit is weird and unsettling.

13523368, Beck - Stratosphere is my shit Posted by DJR, Sun Nov-09-25 09:18 AM
I’m not all the way up on his catalogue, but he’s made some stuff that I like.

13523375, Who do YOU propose? Posted by handle, Mon Nov-10-25 11:22 AM
Beck put out two hugely popular and critically lauded albums in the last 7 years. Colors and Hyperspace were very popular, and very good.
Also Midnite Vultures from 1999 is *amazing.*
And 2002 Sea Change is that break up album a lot of people go to.
He's worked with a lot of very influential folks too: The Dust Brothers Emmylou Harris Air Pink Charlotte Gainsbourg Thurston Moore The Lonely Island Gorillaz Phoenix St Vincent Danger Mouse Pharrell Williams
Heck, he covered INXS record 'Kick' in a very fun way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_LowdZvozw
Played at Paisley Park too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xCIt40BUas&list=RD-xCIt40BUas
Who would be better?
And you might have a trat in front of you - listening to a string of really good records by Beck.

13523498, Nice list.. Posted by RagOnMe, Mon Nov-17-25 09:26 AM
>Freddie Stone >Raphael Saddiq >MonoNeon >Jesse Johnson >Nile Rodgers >Van Hunt >Gary Clark Jr. >India Irie >Lenny Kravitz >Candy Dulfur >Steve Lacy >One or two guitarist from Snarky Puppy >
Now which one of those was gonna play harmonica for "Higher"?
Ok, Gary Clark Jr? (I'll save you the googling) So instead of using the guy that has referenced Sly as an influence over a 30+yr career of fairly experimental, definitely genre-bending creative output/has sampled, recorded, regularly covered Sly songs throughout/spent entire podcast episodes talking influence of & paying homage to him...plus happens to already live in LA where the tribute was done------fly out the guy that lives in Texas (and wasn't even alive when Sly was putting out records..) instead?
|
13523509, Who didn’t Sly influence??? Posted by 3CardMolly, Tue Nov-18-25 08:24 AM
There’s nothing funk about Beck. He could be wearing all of Funkadelic outfits unwashed from 76 live show in Cali and still wouldn’t resonate funk.
Ya’ll trying too hard for a dude mainly known for one damn song in the last 30yrs.
|
13523376, so you don’t know the history of Sly Stone Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Nov-10-25 12:13 PM
that man didn’t give a shit bout what a musician looked like.
and Gamma Ray is my shit.
|
13523472, If you think this is about looks, you way off point Posted by 3CardMolly, Sat Nov-15-25 09:17 AM
. Its about the music. I replied to ‘handle’ with my list.

13523378, What's your favorite Sly Stone song? Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Mon Nov-10-25 02:21 PM
Who do you think should have done the tribute?
I'm trying to see something real quick.

13523419, Raphael Saadiq would be the obvious choice to me. Posted by Original Juice, Wed Nov-12-25 04:23 PM
He was surprisingly absent from the Sly Lives! documentary by Questlove as well.. not sure if that was by choice or not, though.

13523420, Isn’t he on tour? Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Nov-12-25 04:27 PM

What did the White Stripes do besides that Seven Nation Army song 20+ years ago?
What did Radiohead do besides that Creep song 20+ years ago?
There is this Wikipedia that can help out time to time.

13523475, They both had impact Posted by 3CardMolly, Sat Nov-15-25 09:23 AM

Ok geezus. You dont know that Peppers whole get down was they were influenced by Jimi, George, and Sly? And implemented that influence into their music and attitude. Nevermind the audience of meatheads that came but the band itself at heart. Sop yes it makes sense that Keidas as a mai spokesman and yes even Flea be one to present for Sly if they aren't going to use the other black artists proposed posted earlier. More than Beck, yes.

Lulz, "whole get down.." the only thing George about their early albums is he produced one of them--that shit's all Talking Heads/Gang of Four, sung by someone doing an Iggy Pop imitation (and if he rapped like Melle Mel)
I don't get why one guy in that^ band also idolizing Larry Graham auto-shoes them in as the more deserving Sly tributary.. (than the multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter/record producer guy..your dissent here makes even less since you're a Prince fan..)

13523476, Cause he funky af Posted by 3CardMolly, Sat Nov-15-25 09:25 AM
Definitely no Victor Wooten, and MonoNeon would’ve been a great choice as well but Flea is still solid and a funkman.
|
13523483, lol.. so you just posting to post Posted by legsdiamond, Sat Nov-15-25 03:43 PM

13523511, I like Flea Posted by 3CardMolly, Tue Nov-18-25 08:41 AM
I like his style of playing and his crackish ways. He aint no MonoNeon (much more preferred) but he’s fun, is part of a legendary band and plays funk-styled bass.
Whats your hangup?
|
13523521, lmao.. you like Flea and 5 other people in here like Beck Posted by legsdiamond, Tue Nov-18-25 03:25 PM
what is your hangup?
|
13523567, However, I aint stuck on Flea or vouching Posted by 3CardMolly, Thu Nov-20-25 07:38 AM
For him as a great choice. Once again, I would’ve chose Mono or Pino for sure. But Flea’s aiight.
|
13523576, ehh, you were kinda vouching for Flea Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-20-25 11:27 AM
and that’s fine.
I don’t think anyone in here was demanding Beck play beforehand but I wasn’t offended or thrown off by it.
|
13523654, Not really but I dont mind that he was there. Posted by 3CardMolly, Mon Nov-24-25 07:31 AM
Also dont mind that ‘I’mma dog/mutt’ dude was there either, although Gary Clark Jr. I think would’ve been a better choice.

13523481, Generally, I would say they just gotta include a white person... Posted by Boogie Stimuli, Sat Nov-15-25 01:10 PM
but Sly, being one of my favorite MUSICIANS ever (don't confuse that with favorite people) was one of the biggest c00ns to ever grace the music industry, rivaled only by maybe Jackie Wilson who did a tribute album to blackface performer Al Jolson. I was so disappointed when I saw Sly arguing with Muhammad Ali on some "what about black on black crime" shit on TV, so I wasn't surprised when reading his memoir and finding that he was damn near the anti-black power advocate of his time. With all that said, I did like how he didn't care anything about a person's race of sex as far as inclusion in his band. It was quite beautiful reading the story of him recruiting Cynthia for the band. As for Beck, I think the Midnite Vultures album alone would've caused Sly himself to handpick Beck for a tribute to him. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if Sly handpicked all white people just to be contrarian and piss Black ppl off. It's why I'm not a huge fan of him as a person. He's an incredibly creative musician tho.
|
13523512, Points noted. Posted by 3CardMolly, Tue Nov-18-25 08:50 AM
I think I’ll check out band of vultures and see what I may have been missing.
On another note, Sly was def an asshole. He truly fucked himself the most and perhaps that can be a little solace considering his halfassness w/Black folks.
|
13523518, Damn, I could've gone my whole life without knowing none of that. Posted by spades, Tue Nov-18-25 12:11 PM

13523568, AshleySaySo Posted by 3CardMolly, Thu Nov-20-25 07:45 AM
Put all his business out. Sly love fucking with people’s heads. White brown eyed brunette girl he was dating in late h.s. had stars in her eyes for their future kids and dashed all that by telling her he wanted a blonde blue eye white girl to have his kids, and 9x’s outta 10 it was probably after fucking.
|
13523577, RE: Generally, I would say they just gotta include a white person... Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Nov-20-25 11:50 AM
yup.. its the “Rock & Roll HOF” so of course they will add a white face or 2.
I remember seeing a tribute on BET for Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake was up there faking the funk. I didn’t like it but Charlie looked happy.
Its also a bridge to the younger generation.

Most honored artist dont state how they feel when being honored if nor Prince and Marlon Brando. Even Denzel had to play it off.

Wait he got flack for the kumbaya shit yes and on that cavet show with Ali he was a bit drugged out and worrying about changing the color of the flag while Ali clowned him about worrying about that nonsense than more serious issues of the day but how was that coonin? He stated he was Anti black stance in his memoir? Explain
