13519688, How do we feel about Jack & Jill? Posted by spades, Wed Dec-31-69 07:00 PM
*ducks*
I know, I know, but I worry about my little guy and his advancement, and if this could help.....
Is this just some leftover respectability politics, talented tenth BS? Or is there something there?
What say the tribe?

It ain't me. No family name, no real money, no pedigree.
All I got is disposable income. lol

13519695, Don't care one way or the other. I guess it is not my social class. Posted by SuiteLady, Mon Jun-09-25 03:51 PM
When it comes to my parents - they were not part of that class. I guess I could be part of that class now with my income level and education, but don't you have to be from money to be a part of it - not just have money.
Either way I don't care.

many worthwhile things to choose to give a damn about. Personally, my answer to this question is "I don't care one way or the other."

13519699, This is where I'm at. Posted by spades, Mon Jun-09-25 04:12 PM
I guess I qualify, but I'm not from money. I just think about how hard I've worked to get where I am and frankly, I've seen some BLOW past me based on connections, etc.
I wonder if my little dude could have it easier than I did.....

13519703, All the people I know in Jack & Jill are cool. Posted by The Bobblehead Man, Mon Jun-09-25 04:20 PM
They are not regular everyday people but they are good people. I had the same preconceived notions as everyone else, but my experiences don't align with that. The extracurricular activities for the young people are def a thumbs up.

13519707, My low class black *ss has been suspicious since hearing about it Posted by csuave03, Mon Jun-09-25 05:47 PM
That said I would think it comes along with great perks and may not create a Black bourgeois individual that doesn’t care about the hood.
I’m also not a parent. I also feel disconnected from J&J, Boule, Linx, Divine 9, etc.
I do believe in the ideal leaders coming from the soil but that may be due to my conditioning.
As an aside, the episode the Bernie Mac show did about J&J was interesting

>That said I would think it comes along with great perks and >may not create a Black bourgeois individual that doesn’t >care about the hood
it actually does. that's the definition of exclusivity. you can't claim to care about something you devalue and exclude

13519726, If I may expound a bit more Posted by csuave03, Tue Jun-10-25 11:52 AM
I think that J&J doesn’t guarantee a child will grow to be an elitist adult and he or she can still enjoy the benefits of the organization
Similarly, MLK Jr. was a member of the Boule but isn’t generally thought to be an elitist. I acknowledge that may not indicate his actual mindset.
Although you may be right and although I feel comfortable with such a stance as yours as I have a natural aversion to organizations that maintain class hierarchy. It may be appropriate to not throw the baby out with the bath water.

all the punk ass folks that where in it back in my days of youth....
highlights from the Membership Page:
*We encourage interested mothers to make contact with Jack and Jill members in their local communities to learn about specific membership guidelines and procedures. If you are unfamiliar with any current members of your local chapter you may choose to network with others in your community to gain contact with a chapter member.
*Legacy status is granted to each child (male or female) who graduates from a Jack and Jill Chapter and whose mother is a member in good standing at the time of the child’s graduation from the chapter.
Them two things right there tell me all I needed to know.... With that said, I wonder how I'd react if we were invited?? We not a part of any social circles....so very slim chance I'm sure....but there IS a couple I suspect is part of the cult based on how they carry themselves....

I had resisted it for years and told my wife not to do it because it's a mother's org and she has no bandwidth to take on new things and she is already doing too much but she was being harrassed by friends to join.
I think the main reason to do it these days if the kids go to white schools and you want to make sure they associate and hang out with other black kids.
My boys have plenty of black friends at there school, but I got particularly concerned that they were not around enough black girls there age. The J&J teens all talk a lot about the teen summit where they take a bunch them for a conference and spend a few days at a hotel and I think it's a good way to expose them to Black girls they could be into. Like Dr Umar says, "Black Queens Forever..."

Yeah.... I didn't think about that. It's probably a no-go on that alone.... :/ > >I think the main reason to do it these days if the kids go to >white schools and you want to make sure they associate and >hang out with other black kids.
This is EXACTLY why I want us to join. > >My boys have plenty of black friends at there school, but I >got particularly concerned that they were not around enough >black girls there age. In a different world MAYBE it could work, but I can tell this isn't going to be "it" for us. Oh well.... > > > > >********** >"Everyone has a plan until you punch them in the face. Then >they don't have a plan anymore." (c) Mike Tyson > >"what's a leader if he isn't reluctant"

13519724, An Answer and a Question: Posted by Damali, Tue Jun-10-25 10:52 AM
Answer: COMPLETE FAKE ASS RESPECTABILITY POLITICS / ELITIST BLACK EXCELLENCE FUCKERY
Question:
>I know, I know, but I worry about my little guy and his >advancement, and if this could help.....
What do you mean by "his advancement"? what does that mean to you specifically?
d

13524310, Bluntly Posted by spades, Mon Dec-22-25 02:00 PM
>What do you mean by "his advancement"? what does that mean to >you specifically? > If this will help him secure a high paying job. When you've "hob knobbed" with these "job creators" as much as I have while I'm making them piles of money that I have limited share in, it makes me think why not me?
and I know why not me. This could be a way to build the foundation of "why him."
If that makes sense. Basically I want him to end up with more money, more connections, more options that I have ( and I have a few....)
Isn't that basically the whole point of parenting - I want them to have / be better than I. ?

13519761, groups like that scream we black and not niggas. Posted by tariqhu, Wed Jun-11-25 03:57 PM

13524312, Well I am 138% nigga Posted by spades, Mon Dec-22-25 02:01 PM
That being said - who does that group scream it to? I don't think I know a white person who even has a CONCEPT of what Jack & Jill is.
|
13524314, niggas? Posted by legsdiamond, Mon Dec-22-25 02:43 PM
|
13524315, Then the message is elitist, not pandering to white supremacy Posted by spades, Mon Dec-22-25 03:35 PM
and honestly, I can live with that. As was done in my household, I will make sure he understands that 1. We ALL niggas and 2.Being a nigga is lit.
:)
but given this is actually a mom org (something I didn't know before this convo ) this is all likely dead for me.

13524468, It's a mixed bag Posted by Beamer6178, Wed Dec-31-25 10:31 PM
Every chapter has its own culture. I've met some really cool ass dads, in chapters other than ours.
It can be a great resume builder showing leadership experience, etc.
Also great for networking in college and beyond.
Because of the cost of entry, there is an (invisible) socio-economic line at play. This usually means that Black children are often in the minority at school, whether in public or private. They also come from families that are better off and more privileged, who have exposed them to more even outside of JJOA. So it's a bunch of privileged kids doing things in structured activities, but activities that their parents usually could afford to do for them on their own, for less cost.
My main issue is that whether by inertia or by active measures, it can replicate the same exclusionary dynamic that white people been doing to us forever. I would have benefited greatly from something like that growing up, cause I was on a motherfucking ISLAND in my academic environment. My parents split up before I was 10 and my extracurricular activities were fairly limited due to $$$ and logistical capacity. Would have been nice to have access to those offerings but who knows whether my mother came into contact with JJOA moms and they didn't deem her worthy enough...*shrugs*
Our kids have gone through/are in it and I've always kept them grounded enough to not be some betterthanothers type of niggas so it's fine.
Also, this, and other groups that have privileged/well to do Black people do NOT CONSOLIDATE AND LEVERAGE OUR POWER AND INFLUENCE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF BLACK PEOPLE. That infuriates me to no end. We could be doing so much more than just for OUR kids, considering why the organization started in the first place.
I will say, one of the most righteous things they ever did was taking in Betty Shabazz and the girls after Malcolm was killed. The irony is that he may have had quite a few things to say about "so called negro organizations" LOL.
