Memphis has the largest Black population in terms of number of people

Memphis’s total population is only a little over 600,000 - of which 60% of the population is Black. That’s about 400,000. Detroit is smaller, has a larger Black population both by percentage of the population and total number. Other large cities like NYC, Chicago, Philly, and Houston all have larger or equal numbers too.

Mississippi is in a class of its own for a variety of reasons though…

Atlanta, Houston, NYC, LA, Philly, DC all seem like they would have more Black folk.

Maybe he meant highest % in the metro area? I could see that bc of Memphis’s location. But the sheer volume of AA’s living in the NYC, Chicago, Philly, DC, ATL, Miami, Dallas, Houston area has to be much higher bc those are much larger (population wise) metro areas.

NYC does have a higher number of Black people than any other city. The other large cities you mentioned also have larger numbers of Black residents than Memphis.

Additionally over 50% of Black people in the US live in the South.
