https://www.tampabay.com/news/nation-world/2023/09/29/man-tied-suspected-shooter-tupac-shakurs-killing-arrested-ap-sources-say/

LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police have arrested a man in the deadly 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur, a long-awaited break in a case that has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.

Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.

The arrest comes two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home July 17 in neighboring Henderson. Documents said police were looking for items “concerning the murder of Tupac Shakur.”

Police reported collecting multiple computers, a cellphone and hard drive, a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, several .40-caliber bullets, two “tubs containing photographs” and a copy of Davis’ 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”

In the book, Davis said he broke his silence over Tupac’s killing in 2010 during a closed-door meeting with federal and local authorities. At the time, he was 46 and facing life in prison on drug charges when he agreed to speak with the authorities.

“They promised they would shred the indictment and stop the grand jury if I helped them out,” he wrote.

He has described himself as one of the last living witnesses to the shooting.

Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip on the night of Sept. 7, 1996. The rapper was in a BMW driven by Death Row Records founder Marion “Suge” Knight in a convoy of about 10 cars. They were waiting at a red light when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them and gunfire erupted.

Shakur was shot multiple times and died a week later.

In 2018, after a cancer diagnosis, Davis admitted publicly in an interview for a BET show to being inside the Cadillac during the attack. He implicated his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, saying he was one of two people in the back seat where the shots were fired.

The shooting happened shortly after a casino brawl earlier in the evening involving Anderson, Shakur and others.

Anderson denied any involvement in the Shakur shooting. He died two years later in a shooting in Compton, California.

Shakur’s death came as his fourth solo album, “All Eyez on Me,” remained on the charts, with some 5 million copies sold. Nominated six times for a Grammy Award, Shakur is largely considered one of the most influential and versatile rappers of all time.

Shakur was feuding at the time with rap rival Biggie Smalls, also known as the Notorious B.I.G., who was fatally shot in March 1997. At the time, both rappers were in the middle of an East Coast-West Coast rivalry that primarily defined the hip-hop scene during the mid-1990s.

Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective who spent years investigating the Shakur killing and wrote a book about it, said he would not be surprised by Davis’s indictment and arrest.

“It’s so long overdue,” Kading told The Associated Press during a recent interview. “People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

Kading said he interviewed Davis in 2008 and 2009, during Los Angeles police investigations of the killings of Shakur in Las Vegas and the slaying of Biggie Smalls.

ots were fired at Shakur and rapper Marion “Suge” Knight. Others were Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown and DeAndre “Freaky” Smith.

“It’s a concerted effort of conspirators,” Kading said, adding that he believed that because the killing was premeditated Davis could face a first-degree murder charge.

“All the other direct conspirators or participants are all dead,” Kading said. “Keefe D is the last man standing among the individuals that conspired to kill Tupac.”

13492097, The simplest explanation has always been the right explanation
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Sep-29-23 01:17 PM
Pac stomped Orlando, Orlando round up the gang and shot Tupac. The conspiracies were all over the place.

And then when Duane “Keffe D” Davis was given the opportunity to knock some time off his unrelated sentence, he spent this yarn about Puffy hiring him to do it. It just kind of blows my mind is that the investigator Kading bought into the Puffy theory. That is, Tupac happened to stomp out the guy who was hired to kill him by Diddy.

13492115, Question...
Posted by Marbles, Fri Sep-29-23 03:06 PM

If Orlando killed Tupac over the hotel stomp-out, why did Suge kill BIG in retaliation? There weren't any connections between Orlando and Puff or BIG, right? Was it because Suge hated the idea of Puffy & BIG continuing to shine while his meal ticket had been killed?
13492129, Not sure. It seems like misdirected revenge for the death of Tupac.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Fri Sep-29-23 05:02 PM
I don't know if Suge thought Diddy was behind Tupac's death or if it has something to do with Diddy kicking it with, and paying crips for protection after Tupac's death.

Run the light, etc. I would do more YouTube
scrolling if you want the details.

I’m not sure it was a Suge hit as much as
general get back.

BIG was warned not to go to LA. He didn’t
want to go to LA.

Guess who talked him into it?

Diddy can make all the reality shows and
fake RnB albums he wants….he’s not the guy
he wants you to think he is.

No better than Suge just sneaky and not as
bold.

Did he put a price on Pac/Suge heads? Did he
say so jokingly? Did he really call after Vegas
and ask “was that us?” ?

I mean…none of it is hard to believe. His own
body guard is spilling shit.

Either way, if it wasn’t for Puff and his backers
there’s a decent chance both BIG and Pac are still here.

If nothing else the 94 shooting was a catalyst
for all of it.

None of this is out of bounds when you think
about what’s happened to other artists/people
around Diddy.

Not sure how anyone- especially hip hop fans-
can stomach him.

13492222, Wait are you suggesting that Puffy had Biggie killed? Why?

13492137, that's not the story though
Posted by Stadiq, Fri Sep-29-23 10:49 PM
the story is Puffy had bounties out on DR chains as well as Pac and Suge's heads. He didn't hire a specific person.

Pac and them jump Orlando because he had one of those chains.

He runs to Keefe, etc....and they figure lets get paid.

Keefe acquires a gun, the shit goes down.

I'm not saying this happened- I'm saying this story (that several have told) makes a lot more sense than he hired Keefe or Orlando specifically and Pac just happened to jump Orlando.

Stop and think about the people around Puffy who either ended up dead, in jail, or careers busted.

And if you have any sense of how Bad Boy was funded, and realize how close the gang ties were there, it is not that much of a stretch.

Puffy is a motherfucking snake, yall.

Posted by mrhood75, Wed Oct-04-23 02:07 PM
And the fact that he likely would doesn't mean he's working for the feds. It means that he thinks it gets him more money through his channel.

Vlad has always been about asking purposely "provocative" questions that will generate lots of clicks for his videos. They all follow the same formula, no matter who he's interviewing.

Lord Jamar? Ask him about white rappers.

Boosie? Ask him if he thinks the Barbie movie is turning people gay.

Any guest of his accused of or believed to have committed some sort of crime? Ask him about the details. If he "confesses"? Great! More clicks for the channel. And more money for him.

Dummies confessing shit on video is just another revenue stream for him.

Fuck Vlad because his platform is evil and a disservice to hip-hop.

Keefe D allegedly signed a proffer agreement to get out of a life sentence. He gave up information on the 2pac case initially in that agreement. He probably thought his life was at it's end when he dealt with cancer in 2018 when he spoke on this again. He kept talking about 2pac's murder going into intricate detail until they had enough evidence to indict him. Bragging about this murder for years made Las Vegas police look bad to the extent they reopened the case.

He did this to himself.

As Greg Kading said (also on Vlad), a proffer agreement is not total immunity. It is confined to that interview only.

He has never been protected by any agreement since his initial interview.

It's a weird focus on the story that one of the biggest "unsolved" hip-hop mysteries is finally leading to some arrests.

Gosh, that guy has always been so compassionate. Always thinking of others.
13492282, There was another guy in the car. I forget his name.
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue Oct-03-23 10:41 AM
And there is a strong case that it could have been him who was the shooter (he better matched the description) but who cares. There were three people in the car riding around with an intent to kill Tupac, 2 of those guys are dead, now the last person in the car is being arrested.

Also, don't believe Suge or Keefe at this point. These are terrible people.

Mainly because Keefy D tried to invole Diddy in it YEARS ago but it never pans out.

Like the idea that DIddy tried to pay for the hit but the dude Zip never delivered the money doesn't make sense. Someone gonna steal a million bucks from the bloods and they let him live?

Keefe D has been trying to bring in Diddy to get his time lowered for all this time but there isn't a single person who was there and knows what happened who is publicly pointing their finger at Diddy.

I think if the feds could have stuck something on Diddy, they would have been done done it.

Or charges could be announced next week, who knows.

Nearly 30 Years Later, Tupac Murder Case Ends In First Conviction

Duane 'Keffe D' Davis was found guilty of orchestrating attack

Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was killed in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting, the long-running case has finally produced its first conviction.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former South Side Compton Crips leader who was the only person ever charged in the 1996 murder, was found guilty Monday (Aug. 31) of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. The Las Vegas jury reached its verdict after less than three hours of deliberation. Davis, 63, could face life in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October. He said he plans to appeal.

Davis was not accused of pulling the trigger. Prosecutors argued that he orchestrated the attack, obtained the gun and directed the younger men in the white Cadillac from which Shakur was shot. Their case centered in large part on Davis’ own words over the years, including statements to investigators, appearances in documentaries and his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend.

The defense maintained that those accounts were exaggerated or fabricated for money and notoriety, pointing to the absence of physical evidence independently placing Davis in the Cadillac that night. His attorney also argued that investigators had failed to corroborate important details of Davis’ various accounts. Davis himself did not testify during the trial.

The prosecution’s narrative dates back to an altercation earlier on Sept. 7, 1996, when Shakur and others beat up Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, during a casino confrontation. Later that night, Shakur was riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside them at a red light. Gunfire struck Shakur multiple times; he died six days later at the age of 25. Knight survived.

The shooting unfolded against the backdrop of the gang and record-label rivalries that had become intertwined with hip-hop’s East Coast-West Coast conflict. Witnesses described the rivalry between the Mob Piru Bloods, associated with Shakur and Knight’s Death Row Records, and the South Side Compton Crips, with the latter linked to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records. The murder of the Notorious B.I.G. six months after Shakur’s death was also revisited during the trial; that case remains unsolved.

Davis’ own evolving account ultimately helped bring the case back into focus. Prosecutors presented statements from a 2008 federal interview, a 2009 interview with Las Vegas police, a 2017 documentary interview and his memoir. In those accounts, Davis repeatedly placed himself in the Cadillac and said he handed a gun to the men in the backseat, though he did not consistently identify the person who fired the fatal shots.

The verdict brought an emotional conclusion to a trial that had drawn Shakur’s family, longtime fans and a steady media presence to the Las Vegas courtroom. After the verdict was read, Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, cried and hugged prosecutors, while Davis’ son covered his face with his hand.

13528338, Congrats to him. Seems like he got what he wanted.
