13485161, Piggybacking offa nother post-- hip.hop artist that exemplified... Posted by Somnus, Thu May-25-23 05:59 PM
the region they claimed as opposed to where they were originally from
biggest example to me is Digable Planets and their repping of Bklyn
most notable offer is "NOISE" off of Blowout Comb
it just reaks of BK back when BK was REALLY BK
honorable mention would of course be Luda and his contributions to the already deep soundscape of ATL
add on.

kurupt shaped some of the culture in a way that I was surprised to learn he didn’t move til his teens. gucci up there but he from the south so it ain’t really as anomalous.

East coast kid, moved to Oakland late in adolescence, and is now one of the first people that comes to mind when you think L.A. / SoCal Hip-Hop.

13485193, Not sure if "exemplifies" applies, but Jay Worthy is an interesting case Posted by mrhood75, Fri May-26-23 11:45 AM
He's originally from Vancouver, moved to Compton, and now makes some of the better late '80s/'90s-influenced So Cal gangsta rap shit out there. He's a West Coast Griselda affiliate, just put out an album with Roc Marci, and is Grimes' step-brother. Kind of a fascinating situation.

13485214, agree but it probably does depend on where you grew up Posted by bearfield, Fri May-26-23 06:29 PM
i grew up in the mid-south and not even in the one city in that region that had a distinct hip hop scene so this kind of regional provincialism never made much sense to me. it probably matters more if you grew up listening to local groups with their own style based on the greater regional sound at the time
