13484405, Is calling a woman handsome an insult?
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-12-23 10:10 AM
I told a coworker how I’ll watch anything Tessa Thompson and she was like “ehh, well.. she’s handsome”

then another coworker said the older white lady who is the Soccer owner on Tedd Lasso was “handsome” and I was thrown off. He is a little different but still. Handsome seems like a way of saying a woman got some hard features.

Sidenote: did you know that Hannah Waddington from Tedd Lasso was the SHAME nun on Game of Thrones?

13484408, i've heard people say that before. never struck me as odd.

i think it's an older term.

it actually has a meaning for women: to be striking but not conventionally good looking.

oddly enough? that's how i view Tessa Thompson. like, i think she's fine, but i wouldn't call her "conventionally good looking". she looks different than most women (i think its the cheekbone structure?) to me but still good looking.

also, randomly two days ago i ran across Tessa's cousins tik tok. she favors Tessa a lot but i would say she's more "conventionally good looking."

lastly, i don't watch Ted Lasso so i didn't know she was on there but i did know Waddington was the Shame nun (i dont' know the characters name either, haha).
13484422, I agree, it's kind of an older thing

I don't think it's meant as an insult but just an old school phrase.

>lastly, i don't watch Ted Lasso so i didn't know she was on
>there but i did know Waddington was the Shame nun (i dont'
>know the characters name either, haha).

I don't know what it is but Hannah Waddingham has looked great in this season of "Ted Lasso."
13484421, I would think so because it's typically used for guys.

a woman could take that as she looks manly, even if that's not how you meant it.

handsome, to me, implies not pretty.
13484431, yeah.. when I follow up they said no, pretty isn’t the right word
Posted by legsdiamond, Fri May-12-23 11:42 AM
implying that its that hard manly attraction

The Black woman who said it t dates white so I def took it as an insult because she was describing a Black woman.
13484443, funny you say that...

cuz after i thought about my first reply more, i was like is that way to say someone is pretty for not being white?

cuz the definition "striking but not conventially good looking"? well conventionally good looking, at least historically, means "white beauty standard."

so........yeah. maybe?
13484474, I've only ever heard it used as an insult...

However, as soon as I read "Tessa Thompson" I thought of the fact that she's openly bi/queer, and it made me think that, maybe, calling a woman "handsome" in the age of pronoun manipulation might not be intended as an insult by those who subscribe.

But then you said the woman started with "ehh, well" and I thought yeah that sounds like an insult.

13484478, I think it applies in a non-insulting way to women who

have a hint of masculinity to their face, and are good looking. People used to say that about Kim Bassinger, or Jennifer Garner.
13484523, nah, just a bit antiquated.

But I've definitely heard women use it in a way that is meant to be insulting
13484530, what's a woman though?

I take it to mean a lady has dude features.

when dude said the Ted Lasso lady was handsome it threw me off because he is a bit.. metrosexual (is that still a word?) and his wife acts like the man in their relationship so I was confused.

He was being a dick tho.. lol.
