but when you think about it, its hard to argue against.

Flo, Ice, Nicki, Cardi B, Bia, Meg, Latto, Rico. Maybe also include Coi and dreamdoll.

Now none of these newer ladies I expect to last beyond a summer or two, but really who are their male counterparts?

Lil Baby and who else?

Again, this isn't about the Drakes, J Coles, Kendricks, I am talking about the folks who are superhot right now and you expect to rule the summer?

BTW, this is not a conversation for old heads. Don't come in here talking about Queen Latifah and MC Lyte.

I don't pay attention to numbers I just try to listen what comes out and if I like it cool.

I think what's he's saying is true and that's cool. I think Doja Cat said her next album will be a rap album.

The old head in me also loves the fact that most of these women are absolutely spitting where a ton of new male-driven hip hop feels slightly more in vein with the sorta hybrid sounds of today. It's cool that it's mostly pure hip hop with these women.

13483462, This is very true.

A social media site like Youtube, for instance, can ensure a content creator's popularity to placing them on the front page, manipulating suscriber and view counts, etc. They have a type. Tik Tok decides who they show to everybody. They also have a type. People sitting at desks are deciding who's viral and popular now with the push of a button.

Tierra Whack is the perfect example to me. She’s a beast on the mic, a visionary in here videos, unique in her styles, extremely versatile and … crickets on the mainstream.

Meanwhile any of these folks that are considered hot right now, men or women … none of them are actually all that great. Some are good, some are good for now, and some are just packaged and processed junk food with a good marketing campaign.

It’s all just filler.

why do you think that is? who runs/controls the mainstream and how shit gets out there? Men, maybe? Maybe even corporations run by men who don't want to rock w/the way Tierra wants to control/own her own career & content?

right cuz that good marketing campaign is in service of corporate profits. alot of artists don't want to play the game the same way (or at least try their best to limit it), therefore they don't get pushed/seen as much

Posted by DJR, Mon May-01-23 06:47 PM
to just make music in the lane that they want to make it in. You don’t need a label. You can work with whoever you want and just put it out yourself. There’s so much music out there…..there’s something for everybody.

What’s supposedly “hot” doesn’t matter nearly as much now as it did 20 years ago either - everybody has headphones, YouTube, and/or a streaming service and little reason to know/care what anyone else is listening to. You don’t have to rely on what radio and tv are playing.

13483502, What's the shelf life on TnA tier female artist?
Posted by Kira, Tue Apr-25-23 11:00 AM
Nicki's been around the longest and fell off a few cliffs but still remains relevant if that counts for anything.

Cardi, Msg, etc will always have a fanbase because at the end of the day sex sells. They're hot for how many summers before the masses look at the younger hotter fresher starlet with TnA bars?

How many of these artists own their masters and full control of publishing rights? They're hot now but for how long? When they fall off what do they have to fall back on?

They can "rule the summer" as much as they want but how many of them will be remembered in six years with new releases that are received as well as prior content? Miss me with the white supremacist gender warz bs.

Any disposable male artist with a bubbling song is their competition.

i say this as someone who thoroughly enjoys ice spice, glorilla, and latto. im excited to see where they go.

but tbh most of these "hot" female rappers are just sampling 2000s petey pablo songs and dropping awful bars, then finessing their 15 minutes into podcasts and brand deals. city girls, cardi, and saweetie come to mind. 5 years since cardi's last album. 3 years since city girls. saweetie never dropped an album. signed to a label since 2018

Not just the ladies, but a lot of the hip-hop sampled songs sound so trash derivative because it's not a genre switching sample. Biggie rapping over Debarge is one thing, but when you hear someone rap over something biggie rapped over, it's hard for it not to sound like trash in comparison.

13483789, I disagree with this. It depends on the artist and how it is sampled

Tribe called quest - Bonita Applebum ( remix)
Biggie- Big Poppa
Cube- today was a good day.

They both sampled Isley Brothers songs, used a different beat,
and they all created three completely different songs.

It’s all about the artist and how the artist creates..no matter how many times a record or
sample is used.

13483790, Yeah you totally missed the point.

It's not about how often one song is sampled. Not the point at all.

In fact, we are kinda saying the same thing is that what matters is how transformative they are from the sampled material.

and all were incredibly dope

sam sample but different feels for all 3.
13483819, Again, that's not my point.

I am not saying anything about sampling the same song. Of course artist can flip the same sample in 3 to 50 different ways and still be fresh. It just matters how dope and transformative the samples are.

But that's not really what this wave of artists are doing. They are just taking a hip-hop song and making another hip-hop song and just replacing the rapping. That's derivative and lazy. At most it's a remix.

Now when you take an R&B song and make it a hip-hop song, there is a certain amount of transformation built in just by switching genres and going from singing to rapping.

In fact, we also saw a wave of R&B songs based on hip-hop songs that were dope and transformative enough to be interesting.

But the latest wave of radio songs are just, again, taking popular rap songs, and having an inferior rapper rap over them.

13483881, what group is complaining about this?
Posted by tariqhu, Tue May-02-23 10:03 PM
this isn't something specific to this younger generation of rappers/producers. it's been going on since the at least the 90's where a rap song sampled another rap song.

is Shoop just a remix of Cube's original Check Yourself? Nastradamus used an EMPD beat. Is that just remix too?

this feels like old head talk. not different than our parents complaining about how our music sampled theirs.
13483887, lol.. we really have a hard time letting go

trying to stay up on things but then we hear a sample we can’t help ourselves

“THIS WAS ORIGINALLY A BIGGIE SONG”

Imagine telling these young heads their shit is “derivative”

kids” okay boomer”

13486564, weird flex.. I dont listen to the young rappers but the most popular
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-15-23 09:35 AM
rappers (that you didn’t want to include in the OP) released albums last year

I don’t think anyone in here argued the new kids had shit on lock now. Most of us said it was trash.. lol.

if anything; its further proof these new rappers (male and female) aint legit stars if they released projects that didnt blow.

I think these younger kids are moreso into youtube views and tik toks.. not actual billboard sales

and who said rap was up this year? besides you in regards to ladies in rap?

13486595, I mean, I could have made this post in the Song of Summer post

It doesn't have anything to do with the girls. If anything they are helping to prop up an otherwise dismal rap scene.

But I made the point here and in other places that hip-hop is in a dismal state these days and it's not just old man complaining, the numbers are objectively down.

And I also stand by Drake or Kendrick can't be the hottest rappers even if they are the biggest. I always associate the hottest rapper as the new face out of nowhere all over the radio and media like Da Baby, Roddy Rich was a few years ago.

13486600, the reason why rap is down is because it's losing wider appeal.
Posted by PROMO, Thu Jun-15-23 01:40 PM
most of the younger rappers are all on that drilling and killing shit, or they can barely rap at all. that turns the "average rap fan" off.

that's not to say they don't have success, but it is to say we're less likely to see rap charting as it has in the past, outside of the established big dogs.

also, promotion is dead. you basically have to get hot on your own as a new artists before you'll get anything, and even then the shit is kinda weird. now, you even get big artists dropping new albums with like 3 days or less notice so the listeners aren't there all at the same time to make a song or album collectively register. people find music at their own speed way more now vs. everyone listening to the same thing all at once.

these are not the only reasons we're seeing this. there's probably a list of 10-20 reasons you could make that all have some validity.
13486601, the biggest cant be the hottest?
Posted by legsdiamond, Thu Jun-15-23 01:47 PM
I will admit, I don’t follow the youngins because I aged out but I also think the younger rappers will struggle to chart because these young kids aren’t buying albums like the old heads.

I think it will continue to trend down as far as sales are concerned and only pop when you see big artist who somehow aren’t hot because they aren’t new.

but someone like Promo or Brooklynwhat are a better rep for this because I repeat, my old ass dont even know who Roddy Rich is.. lol.
13486691, I just came here to add ENNY to the mix
