13473996, Yay, a Black person gets to lead a pseudo lame-duck Congress

Jeffries (whom I voted for, while living in his district) of the less than 10 legislative bills he's sponsored, none were related to Blackness. For the nearly 100 bills he's co-sponsored that have become law during, what will be, his decade's long career in Congress, his record's not remarkable related to Blackness.

Bills that were unique to Blackness (among the dozens of others unique to specific ethnic/orientation/heritage/historic groups that he's also helped pass) almost all had to do with Gold Star recognitions, the renaming of post offices and efforts towards commemorative coins. Aside from an Act for the National Parks Service to institute a network for educational guides related to civil rights era, there's the passage of the Emmett Till Antilynching Act. I won't argue about it being largely another symbolic gesture, but it was done weeks after co-sponsoring a passed bill to financially support Public Safety Officers specifically.

My point is this is like celebrating Lovie Smith getting the job to coach the Texans after they fired David Culley. They're planning to use him as a toll to be the Heavy--versus AOC n'em--for more Congressional inaction and to promote centrist polices no-one really wants.
13474020, The power and impact of “The first” is largely underrated these days….

The fact that his Blackness is somehow “less than” in your mind based wholey on his political wins is a major problem.

it's good for history but what will it do if he's not different politically vs the folks he may be replacing?
13474054, it shouldn't....but it is. And it's not just good for history...

I'm just not celebrating their Blackness.
The empty symbolism is lost on me.

stop understanding the importance of milestones is the minute we can expect them to cease happening.
13474082, What exactly is the milestone though?

>Jeffries (whom I voted for, while living in his district)

if him and Schumer will try to pass legislation that will be pro-NY since they both have positions of leadership. I have a feeling Jeffries will have his hand full because I'm assuming the House Republicans will try to be obstructions to any and everything Biden proposes and Jeffries will probably get caught in the middle for better or for worse.

I should mention that he's currently my Representative, hence the majority of my reason for the selfishness on my prior paragraph. One piece of legislation I'm hoping Jeffries will rally behind is reinstituting the SALT tax deductions Trump did away with when he was President. Would be nice to get better returns when it comes time to file for taxes.
13474003, he just as a corporate centrist as Pelosi

but since so much of politics these days is all surface level BS, we stuck with the same ol' bullshit...

we gonna keep supporting fossil fuel industry
keep funding wars and imperialism
not get universal healthcare
not see student/medical debt forgiven
more police and prisons

...but hooray diversity!

Have you heard Jeffries comments on Israel?
or his anti-worker, anti-union views? or his support for charter schools?

is it really better getting 'something done' even if it means continuing to fund corporate interests, the war machine and other forms of oppression?

Fighting for causes and issues that would benefit workers, the people and environment are a waste of time? because they're based on ideology?

please explain how supporting this destructive status quo oppression is better?

I'd say this country lost it's goddamn minds if we possessed one to begin with...or we just simp waaaaaaay too hard for imperialism.

Hooray!!

13474086, Ideological Purity is the GOP's Bread and Butter
Posted by Cam, Thu Dec-01-22 02:45 PM
There's not a single Democratic or Independent member of Congress who operates with that brand of obstruction.

If anything that's exactly what Democratic leadership needs to do to combat how the GOP wins without control, beating them at their own game.

It's exactly what Bill Clinton did, successfully overcoming Newt Gingrich's lead House in the mid-90s.
