13473664, WORLD CUP 2022
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Nov-21-22 09:26 PM
The biggest sporting event in the world deserves a goddamn post in GD.
We're already 2 days down.
The host country lost the opening game for the first time ever.

England spanked Iran and is gonna be hella annoying until they get brought back down to Earth.

Everyone was rooting for Senegal but The Netherlands, got the W in a game decided by just a few moments.

The young, inexperienced US team blew a 1-0 leads to Wales, who's playing their first World Cup in 50 years in a frenetic, somewhat sloppy game.

13473665, Frustrating second half for USA
Posted by makaveli, Mon Nov-21-22 10:44 PM
I can’t wait for this game on Friday.
13473666, i have two islander coworkers who were watching today...
Posted by mikediggz, Mon Nov-21-22 11:41 PM
my yardie homie was highly animated lol.
13473667, My boy Atiba is captain of team Canada!
Posted by Heinz, Mon Nov-21-22 11:47 PM
His first World Cup and probably his past due to age. Excited for him.

13473672, For Wales it's 64 years since they were last in the WC, not 50.

13473673, huge upset by Saudi Arabia against Argentine
Posted by thegodcam, Tue Nov-22-22 08:28 AM
i love that they looked like an African team too
13473677, Group C just became incredibly interesting
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Nov-22-22 09:16 AM
It seemed that Argentina would walk stroll into first place, Mexico and Poland would duke it out for 2nd.
Saudi's said NOPE!
Mexico/Argentina on Saturday is gonna be exciting

sidenote, officiating is feeling a little suspect so far starting with the opening game and that ridiculous offside call against Ecuador.
13473683, Yeah
Posted by mista k5, Tue Nov-22-22 10:30 AM
That was a shocking upset. Mexico probably needs the win today because I doubt Argentina let's them get a tie. Who knows though. Wish the games weren't so early. Going to have a meeting when the Mexico game starts so I'll miss the first half for sure.
13473682, I haven't watched 1 game.
Posted by spades, Tue Nov-22-22 10:04 AM
I'm a little mad. I gotta get up on game.
13473695, Nice penalty save by Ochoa
Posted by mista k5, Tue Nov-22-22 12:15 PM
13473717, Who's your team, or teams? Come rep yo squad!
Posted by spades, Tue Nov-22-22 05:38 PM
Me,

USA - Of course
Mexico - Sentimental reasons
Ghana - BEST uniform design.

That's ALWAYS my squad. Who you wit?
13473719, Mexico
Posted by mista k5, Tue Nov-22-22 06:49 PM
My whole family roots for them, grew up rooting for them. That's my heritage. In other events/spots I'll root for USA but yeah can't really for this.

I do have a soft spot for Argentina, or did growing up. It's kind of faded. Obviously not rooting for them in the group stage. Not sure I will if they advance and Mexico doesn't. 100% rooting for Mexico on Saturday.

Brazil is kind of the Patriots of soccer so yeah not rooting for them.

Yeah I think that's it for teams in this cup.
13473729, Viva Mexico!

Got hooked on the Mexican National team living with my wife's family. Now it's just a given.

13473732, You're missing a few then.
Posted by dagu, Wed Nov-23-22 10:34 AM
Probably need to add everyone south of Mexico minus Argentina.
13473733, Ecuador is a black ass team
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Nov-23-22 10:44 AM
13473734, Japan probably just had the performance of the cup so far
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Nov-23-22 10:46 AM
that was so ill
13473735, I saw the result but was wondering how it happened
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-23-22 12:18 PM
There were no shenanigans?
13473737, No shenanigans at all!
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Nov-23-22 12:43 PM
they just came out in the second half playing a different game than they did in the first.
13473751, Canada should've won that game
Posted by thegodcam, Wed Nov-23-22 04:03 PM
13473769, The Portugal vs Ghana second half was good
Posted by mista k5, Thu Nov-24-22 01:41 PM
I'm not sure that Ronaldo penalty call was good but it sure opened up the game.
13473837, RICHARLISON!
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Nov-28-22 11:21 AM
It was a few days ago, but it looks like we were all gon for the holidays, so I just wanna say GODDDDDDDDAMN that goal against Serbia was so crazy.

Let's see what he does today.
13473981, and the US moves on to the group of 16
Posted by spades, Wed Nov-30-22 10:42 AM
How we feeling about our chances?

I honestly never have high hopes about the American Men's team, but holding England to zero with SEVERAL shots on goal got me feeling like we better than I though we were.
13473983, US has worked hard to get to this point, well deserved
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-30-22 10:47 AM
Round of 16 is tough but this cup has been somewhat unpredictable so anything is possible.

13473985, The Dutch can get got
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Wed Nov-30-22 11:11 AM
They are not the Dutch of old or even of the late 00s. These mfs is mid as hell.
13474008, seems like this is the best US team in a while
Posted by makaveli, Wed Nov-30-22 03:37 PM
still will be tough to beat the big dogs, we have good players but not great attackers. Netherlands will be tough to beat, but it's certainly doable.
13473995, Predictions for Group C final games?
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-30-22 01:48 PM
Argentina vs Poland
Mexico vs Saudi Arabia

Poland 4
Argentina 3
Saudi Arabia 3
Mexico 1

Most likely outcome is Poland and Argentina advance but no reason to think Saudi Arabia can't beat Mexico. Mexico needs to win big to advance.

I was thinking Mexico wouldn't make it to the round of 16 but for them to finish last??

I'm nervous to watch.
13473997, Mexico coming out with a purpose
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-30-22 02:06 PM
Already missed some good opportunities though
13474010, They had so many chances at the end to get that 3rd goal
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Nov-30-22 04:03 PM
and just couldn't fucking do it.
13474012, That's the story of El Tata's time
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-30-22 04:10 PM
It was exciting to see them actually go for the win and have so many chances but it's so frustrating seeing them miss clear ones. Saudi Arabia did make some good blocks. That last second goal by them was kind of heart breaking. I think even without it Mexico was out but it basically ended their chances.

I cheered Messi missing the penalty earlier but that would had put Mexico forward, assuming they didn't give up the last second goal lol
13474016, Right...
Posted by dillinjah, Wed Nov-30-22 05:06 PM
>and just couldn't fucking do it.
13474025, I cannot believe Saudi Arabia has beat Argentina & Mexico.
Posted by spades, Wed Nov-30-22 05:37 PM
This must be the mirrorverse.
13474026, well they didn't beat Mexico
Posted by mista k5, Wed Nov-30-22 05:41 PM
just kept them out lol Mexico won 2-1 but it felt like a loss since it wasn't enough to move on.

Watching the game did make me wonder how Argentina lost to SA. Mexico very much dominated the game and if they knew how to convert it would have been an ugly blow out.
13474157, So who's making it to quarter finals?
Posted by mista k5, Fri Dec-02-22 05:23 PM
Match ups for round of 16

Backet 1
Netherlands vs US
Argentina vs Australia

Japan vs Croatia
Brazil vs South Korea

Bracket 2
France vs Poland
England vs Senegal

Morocco vs Spain
Portugal vs Switzerland

I'm going with US and Argentina. Would be surprised by Australia but not shocked.
I think Japan and Brazil advance.
Going with France and Senegal.
Morocco and Portugal.

13474211, so much for the US, Damn The Netherlands SMACKED us up.
Posted by spades, Mon Dec-05-22 10:32 AM
13474218, yeah my picks are looking bad
Posted by mista k5, Mon Dec-05-22 11:33 AM
Seems like the top seeds are taking care of business.
13474266, I'm claiming Morocco winning means I got it right
Posted by mista k5, Tue Dec-06-22 12:48 PM
forget about USA Japan and Senegal I picked one right!! lol

As bad as Japan penalties were yesterday at least they made one. The Spanish keeper kept jumping in the wrong direction.

13474270, Without Spain, looks like France is gonna walk into the final
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Dec-06-22 01:09 PM
I guess England could potentially upset them, but not Morocco, Portugal, or Switzerland.

13474271, I got 1.
Posted by spades, Tue Dec-06-22 01:31 PM
lol
13474294, This ain’t a walk at all for france
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Dec-06-22 05:53 PM
France is favored but Portugal and England are top 5 nations and loaded all over
13474332, England is 5, Portugal is 9
Posted by Hitokiri, Wed Dec-07-22 08:54 AM
And you thought the US could beat the Netherlands.
The same English side struggled mightily against the US. They've got talent for sure, both sides do. But France is just on another level rn.
13474335, Belgium was 2. The fifa rankings are fugazi I use my eyes

13474296, Quarter-Finals Predictions?
Posted by mista k5, Tue Dec-06-22 06:17 PM
Who's making the semi-finals? To make it more interesting list the final scores.

Netherlands 1 - Argentina 2
Croatia 0 - Brazil 4

England 1 - France 3
Morocco 2 - Portugal 2 (Morocco 4-3 in PK!)

Incredible predictions
13474592, What a fucking day
Posted by Hitokiri, Sat Dec-10-22 12:21 AM
My nerves were still firing long after the final whistle of game 2.

Both games decided in pens.
Tite shits the bed sending Rodrygo out there first. Like he didn't see England in the Euro final or something.

Then Emi and Lautaro (for once) come up huge.

What a day.
13474595, it was bananas
Posted by thegodcam, Sat Dec-10-22 02:45 AM
tell me why my 7 year-old was legit sad to see Brazil lose.... yesterday was a sports telenova...
13474600, RE: it was bananas

I wanna say no way Morocco is beating Portugal, but there have been some strange results in this world cup. I was live at the Portugal v Switzerland game, great seats 4 rows behind the keepers net, The atmosphere was crazy.Wish I had tickets for tonight's game.

France is a favorite but UK can turn up the magic when they want to. Is Sterling back?
13474614, Tough L for England. Also a typical one

They just can't catch a break. If they believed in African rituals they should have long gone to the river or ocean to wash their badluck.

I felt bad for them after Kane missed that penalty.
13474623, Neymar should have demanded the ball for that first PK.
Posted by Castro, Sun Dec-11-22 12:19 PM
Would Tite have denied him? No one on Argentina was going to try and step in front of Messi. Huge L for the Selecao.
13474648, It's prlly gonna be France, but I wouldn't be 2 shocked if it was Morrocco.
Posted by spades, Mon Dec-12-22 09:56 AM
This has been SUCH a weird cup.
13474756, France is just too good
Posted by mista k5, Tue Dec-13-22 11:05 AM
BUT Morocco is still getting that W!

Argentina staying alive today.
13474804, Julian Alvarez would not be denied!
Posted by Hitokiri, Tue Dec-13-22 02:50 PM
Godddddddamn!
13474812, GOAT

13474885, lol

Against France?

That was always a fairytale?
13474927, RE: lol
Posted by imperial, Thu Dec-15-22 10:05 AM
The make up of the players on the French team allow me to believe that this is still a win for Africa.
13475011, Oh I agree.
Posted by spades, Thu Dec-15-22 03:36 PM
13474893, that shit cray

13475085, This has been the best World Cup I've seen
Posted by villian_1998, Fri Dec-16-22 04:51 PM
It's been weird to have it during the winter months but I must truly say it's been exciting to see the perennial teams lose and have quite a few underdogs make their way through.

13475092, Predictions for the Final?
Posted by mista k5, Fri Dec-16-22 06:00 PM
Morocco is asked to step in for France due to illness and they beat Argentina 4-1!!

Okay no but I guess things are shaking up for Argentina to have a great 180 from their first game this cup.

If healthy France is very hard to beat.

I'm going to say Argentina wins it.

Morocco does win big against Croatia for 3rd place.
13475127, Best.Final. Ever.
Posted by thegodcam, Sun Dec-18-22 01:57 PM
and i was cheering for France.... but happy Messi gets a well deserved farewell by finally winning the World Cup

and MBAPPE should not EVER pay for a drink in France for at least the next 4 years....
13475156, I missed the first half
Posted by mista k5, Mon Dec-19-22 10:31 AM
second half felt like it was a done deal until it wasn't lol France didn't seem to be fighting enough but then they would get a good ball and it felt like they could come back real quick. Then we the PK and the second goal real quick.

Both teams kept fight after that. Just knew it was over when Argentina went up in extra time but then France ties it up.

Very exciting.
13475164, I missed most of the 2nd half lol...
Posted by ThaTruth, Mon Dec-19-22 12:06 PM
saw Argentina go up 2-0 and figured it was a wrap, stepped out to get some food and one of my neighbors told me France had tied it. Got my food to go and made it make to see the last 10 minutes and the PK's.
13475158, Best World Cup Final I've ever seen
Posted by Hitokiri, Mon Dec-19-22 10:59 AM
My voice is still hoarse.

Messi's the GOAT. He's finished football. Won everything. I don't wanna hear that word next to Cristiano's name ever again.

Emi Martinez should be sainted in Argentina. He saved 3 penalties in the shootout with Colombia in the Copa America semi-finals. Saved 2 in the WC semi-finals against The Netherlands. And then saves one in the WC Final against France. Plus that stretch-save in the final minute of extra time against Muani. Goddamn.

Di Maria's inclusion was crucial. I doubt he was fully recovered so he deserves all the flowers.

But man, after all the criticism, the disappointing 2010 WC, the 2014 final that was in his grasp, the quitting the national team, coming back, winning the 2020 Copa America, and now finally winning the World Cup. This has been incredible.
