13469632, RIP Coolio...dead at 59
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Sep-28-22 08:31 PM
My buddy and I were just talking about him on a road trip, this past weekend. His video for Gangster's Paradise used to play on Video Jukebox, non-stop. Damn.

13469633, County Line was a classic.

Routinely in the Phat 5 at 9 on Power 106 back in the day.. That man had quite the run in the 90s. Sure, Gangstas Paradise is what people will remember most but shit….he even did the Keenan and Kel song. RIP to a legend.
13469634, Sad and young, did they say cause of death?
Posted by ThaTruth, Wed Sep-28-22 08:43 PM
13469636, Apparently, he went to the bathroom at a friend's house...
Posted by Dstl1, Wed Sep-28-22 08:51 PM
never came out, friend eventually went in and he was dead on the floor. EMTs said it appeared to be cardiac arrest.
13469637, damn

13469635, I still play “It Takes a Thief” sometimes
Posted by DJR, Wed Sep-28-22 08:44 PM
It’s a bummer. The man had a major run.
13469638, dude cracked me up one time
Posted by Ray_Snill, Wed Sep-28-22 09:04 PM
he was talking about how he shouldn't have won best video against Bone Thugs and Harmony, my guy was like "to this day, that Bone Thugs video is one of the best most creative videos ever, I just rapped in a white girl face"

RIP

13469641, Was a big fan during MAAD Circle Years and his first solo album

Listening to It Takes a Thief right now; still dope.

Even when i didn’t love his musical output, i could never deny his skill or sincerity.

R.I.P.
13469642, Rest in peace. :(

I'll forever remember him for I Remember.
13469643, I was sad to hear this...RIP

13469644, Underrated as a story rapper. RIP

County Line could have been a comedy script

Shoutout to him for leveraging his fame to manager Ras Kass, even tho it didn’t work out as well as I hoped it would
13469647, RIP.. is it weird that I’m impressed he made it to 59?

59 is young…

but for a rapper it feels old.

He had some joints and an amazing run.
13469654, If I recall, he struggled with crack addiction?
Posted by DJR, Thu Sep-29-22 08:25 AM
I imagine that can take years off. Sad though - he always seemed like a good and well liked guy.
13469694, Yeah, he struggled with crack addiction in the 1980s
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Sep-29-22 11:39 AM
Talked about it a lot during the press for It Takes a Thief. His song "Out Da Closet" is about it.
13469679, I feel like "impressed" is the wrong word.

13469663, 59 is so young.

fuck
13469671, Brutal. RIP.

Was a big fan in my younger days. When I was in 8th grade I got sick a lot so I spent a ton of time at home playing Slingo and listening to My Soul (which IMO is a super underrated Coolio album).

Then there was the movie Eddie with Coolio's "It's All the Way Live" which I always thought was a jam.

RIP. Seemed like a really solid dude and had some absolute bangers for a few years there.
13469675, RIP

13469698, It's a trip to think that he didn't really blow up until he was 30+
Posted by mrhood75, Thu Sep-29-22 11:46 AM
His solo career took off in the summer of 1994.

And he was older than almost all of his contemporaries and peers. Older than everyone in Run-DMC. Older than all three Fat Boys. In fact, of the rappers who really first blew up in the mid to latee '80s, I think the only ones he was younger than were Chuck D, Ice-T, Kool Moe Dee, and Schoolly-D. And even those guys got "big" hen they were still in their 20s.

They only say rap is a young man's game, but it's kind of amazing that Coolio didn't blow up until he reached what was then considered hip-hop middle age.
13469717, The only other rapper I can think of that didn't blow up until after turning 30
Posted by Shaun Tha Don, Thu Sep-29-22 04:12 PM
is Plies.

.... Chuck D, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz...
13469725, Nicki…that’s wild but true
Posted by DJR, Thu Sep-29-22 08:05 PM
She just didn’t look like or frankly have the subject matter of a damn near 30 year old when that first album blew up.

If you told me she was 20 then and is early 30s now, I’d believe it.

I think that’s probably both good and bad…
13469726, And on that note…how about Rapsody?
Posted by DJR, Thu Sep-29-22 08:08 PM
Not on the same level commercially, but she’s known.

Didn’t really make noise until she was around 30, and started having her most success at like 35-37 with her last two albums. I believe she’s got something coming soon if I remember right.
13469728, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj were both in their late 20's when they blew up.
Posted by Shaun Tha Don, Thu Sep-29-22 10:10 PM
Plies was 31.
13469733, He’s 5 years older than LL - who blew up almost a decade before him.
Posted by Mignight Maruder, Fri Sep-30-22 06:08 AM
Crazy when you think about it. He found his lane though and caught lightning in a bottle for a several year run that very few rappers have experienced.
