13463920, Something about this just isn't sitting right with me.
Posted by spades, Wed Jul-06-22 01:08 PM
13463946, Same here
Posted by Lach, Wed Jul-06-22 08:16 PM
and I don't even feel like discussing it. I'm tired.
13463963, For me it's the accents.
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Jul-07-22 09:58 AM
Like - in Black Panther they could get away with some of the bad accents like Forrest Whitaker's because Wakanda is fictional. (Also Forrest's character had spent significant time in the US, so maybe that explained it being a bit off.) But in this trailer I heard a couple accents that just sounded Hollywood fake. Not that I know anything about how people in 19th century Dahomey sounded.

13463921, I spent half the trailer trying to figure out if this was
Posted by Adwhizz, Wed Jul-06-22 01:09 PM
the sequel to Black Panther
13463942, Looks like a spin-off of that fire episode of Lovecraft Country.
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Jul-06-22 04:51 PM
13463945, THAT'S what it reminded me of.

Posted by jdub1313, Thu Jul-07-22 11:10 AM
you know how long EYE've been waiting for some shit like this?

All the ancient history movies are anglo. Greece, rome, egypt, britan, etc.

And I fuck with all of them. Gladiator, Braveheart, Troy, Master and Commander, Robin Hood. I love all of them.

Finally a big budget african history warrior epic with Viola fucking Davis. Sign me the fuck up.

They get to greenlight all of their bullshit movies about THEIR ancient history, some of them win Oscars or get nominated like Gladiator. Some of them are basura like that Alexander the Great movie with Colin Farrel lol. But they all get made.

I've been waiting for some hollywood blockbuster african warrior shit my whole life. Black Panther showed them it was possible man. So many stories to tell if they would just throw some money at it. I'm there day one just like i was for Black Panther.
13463976, Oh trust I’m there day ONE. Was just mentioning something that felt
Posted by soulfunk, Thu Jul-07-22 12:15 PM
a bit “off” to me, in that a couple of the accents I heard took me out of the setting. But no it looks amazing - definitely hyped for it.
13463977, I feel you, but I'ma wait.
Posted by spades, Thu Jul-07-22 12:34 PM
Come back and tell me what you thought, and I'll be there like days 2-5, but def 1st week.
13463978, right?

13464118, Yes lets highlight an army created due to the transatlantic slave trade
Posted by Musa, Sat Jul-09-22 03:53 PM
along with one of the biggest slave trading kings on record in African history... who was also the product of a coup with the help of a Brazilian Portuguese mixed slave trader Franscisco De Souza.

Forgot to add in an odd 6 degrees of separation King Ghezo and the woman warriors helped sell off one of this websites ancestors QuestLove and the Coltilda in what was called Africatown Alabama. Which was one of the last KNOWN slave trading ships to transport Africans into the mainland USA.

Oluale Kossola aka Cudjoe Lewis gave a detailed account of his kidnapping by the Dahomey warriors in his interviews with Zora Neal Hurston that was turned into a book Barracoon.

13464173, i can appreciate this reply
Posted by jdub1313, Mon Jul-11-22 02:34 PM
just did a little googling (ordered the book too). does kind of put a stain on the whole thing. Happy for those involved, but they couldn't find any other stories? probably not that simple...

13464174, Cool response
Posted by Numba_33, Mon Jul-11-22 02:43 PM
Now I'm curious how the folks involved with this flick will respond if the facts you've mentioned are brought up for them to discuss.
13464203, Thanks and I want to see the same.

13464207, Thanks a mill

.
13464192, I was really confused by some of the replies
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Mon Jul-11-22 03:58 PM
I thought the initial replies alluded to this, but then some subsequent replies were concerned with something else completely, and some were positive but didn't address the history behind the groups and people being depicted (I'm assuming they just didn't know).
13464206, Sadly when it comes to West and central African history
Posted by Musa, Tue Jul-12-22 07:22 AM
we are kept in the dark. Hell the average person in most African countries don't know pre colonial history it's like the Diaspora has had one big knock on the head.
13464273, couldn't have said it better

Posted by Numba_33, Tue Jul-12-22 11:17 AM
if this movie got Oscar love partly (really mainly) as result of what you just posted.

This is a rather intriguing movie for many, many reasons.
13464277, You already know its coming.

13464285, Hopefully, they will truly tell the history of the Dahomey
Posted by allStah, Wed Jul-13-22 09:00 AM
African kingdom , and it will not be pretty.

It was an African kingdom that focused on extreme warfare against other African societies, and a large number of male warriors were killed during warfare,
which is why the kingdom had no choice but to train women to become warriors.

But it was the Dahomey kingdom that helped grow the Atlantic slave trade. They traded African prisoners and slaves for European goods, mainly weapons. They were known for pillaging and devastating other Africans kingdoms...They literally went on slave raids

They were vicious, intelligent warriors and African slavers who enslaved other African tribes....It’s a story that needs to be told, and hopefully it’s told with a great deal of truth
and substance.....but again it will not be pretty.

I’m looking forward to this movie.
13464308, Given the trailer. This doesn't look like that story.
Posted by spades, Wed Jul-13-22 11:10 AM
but we'll see.
13464322, I’m hoping for the best.
