13462293, Songs that you absolutely despised back in the day...

that you find yourself bopping hard as shit to now?

for me it's "No Diggity" by Blackstreet

joint came over the radio this morning and it was a whole vibe

I dunno maybe I was just in a particularly rare "good mood" *shrug*

what say you, OKP?

13462295, "A Milli"

In fact I could just answer "a good chunk of Lil Wayne's catalogue" I loathed his music back when he was at his peak. But I've since come around on him on some level. I still don't necessarily seek out his music but I love a bunch of stray Wayne songs from the mid-to-late 00s period, and have come to appreciate his brand of rap and his work ethic.
13462296, Dah! I fucking HATE that song. Yeah I still stand pretty firm in my

disdain for most things Lil Wayne

"I Feel Like Dying" and his verse on "Hollywood Divorce" notwithstanding

oh, and his generic-ass foray into rock music with "Prom Queen"...it had a corny appeal to it, I dunno
13462297, LOL yea, I still don't *care* for the majority of his output, to be clear.
Posted by Brew, Mon Jun-13-22 01:52 PM
I just no longer have the outright contempt for him and his music that I had in 2008 when he was, according to the youths of that time, the "greatest rapper alive." I think a lot of my adverse feelings about him were the result of that hyperbole. I was also in the beginning stages of becoming a huge Royce 5'9 fan around that time, and his anti-Wayne output during that time period only added to my own distaste.

But with hindsight I've come to appreciate his approach to the craft (man just rhymes and rhymes and rhymes and rhymes, which I can't hate on, on principle if nothing else) even if 50 or 60% of his music still isn't really for me.

13462368, try having Wayne, Royce and Pusha in some circle of a Top 5
Posted by Nodima, Tue Jun-14-22 02:34 PM
Both Royce and Push chalked Wayne up over and over and over...and it hurt, bad!

interesting.
13462305, I didn't either haha.
Posted by Brew, Mon Jun-13-22 03:40 PM
I thought most "purists" (for lack of a better term) like me had all come around like/when I did.
13462306, Believe it. He was the harbinger of all those ringtone, hashtag,
Posted by Somnus, Mon Jun-13-22 04:26 PM
mumble, "Lils" and "Baby" rappers the game is infested with TO THIS DAY! (c)

he shall NEVER be forgiven
13462309, well he DEFINITELY wasn't the ringtone harbinger. those were around...
Posted by PROMO, Mon Jun-13-22 04:35 PM
before Wayne REALLY took off.

but yes, he fathered many rap babies.

that being said, hardly ANY of his rap babies have his skill, artistry, etc. so you should hold THEM against him. he can't make them have good music.
13462310, man, I tried for the life of me to hear what it is people see/saw
Posted by Somnus, Mon Jun-13-22 04:47 PM
in dude's music and where all this talk of his genius was coming from but perhaps I just missed that whole movement, maybe I had to be *there*

definitely don't want this to turn into a Lil Wayne post but give me your best examples, por favor
13462326, I'm right there with you on Wayne.
Posted by soulfunk, Tue Jun-14-22 08:11 AM
Didn't like him at all during his peak when Milli and 6 foot 7 foot and other joints were out. Just wasn't my thing at the time. But one day a couple years ago A Milli came on while I was at the gym and it just hit me all at once...not that his stuff is in heavy general rotation for me, but I've got a decent amount of Wayne on my workout playlists now.
13462367, Can't cosign the post but I CAN say it took a decade to love 6 Ft 7 Ft
Posted by Nodima, Tue Jun-14-22 02:32 PM
Because at the time it was so blatantly a re-run of A Milli, which may very well be the best rap song ever made don't @ me, that I was immediately disappointed by it (even if the "real G's move in silence like lasagna" line immediately entered the dumb and drunk meme lexicon) and spent years wondering why people slightly younger than me would ever gravitate towards the inferior sequel (I realize now the beat is simply far more accessible)

13462381, funny, I was just thinking about how I learned about the song
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-14-22 08:22 PM
a friend of a friend used to kick it with a tiny stoner dude who had a Burt Reynolds mustache. Imagine a 5ft 0 dude with a crisp mustache who was always high and barely spoke, because he was always high.

Out of the blue, he started doing a thing when he would just randomly say "AMILLI AMILLI AMA-AMA-AMA-AMILLI" in the deepest voice.

This was like, a full 2 or 3 months before the song was everywhere. Just hearing him singing it infected my brain, so I started to say "AMILLI AMILLI AMA-AMA-AMA-AMILLI" at the most random times like folding clothes or flossing.

Eventually, I heard the song and had a good laugh.

Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-15-22 07:45 AM
and hated that song and video.

It goes but as a kid it was old people music.
13462366, pretty much every "ringtone rap" song from 2006-2009
Posted by Nodima, Tue Jun-14-22 02:29 PM
I used to be a huge prick about all that shit at parties...now it just reminds me of what it felt like to be young. I like it all now for the most part, but maybe that's also because the ONLY time I hear them is as part of a reference in a joke or a total fluke of circumstances rather than, y'know, every fucking minute of my day lol.

13462378, Borderline, Return Of The Mac, Jughead, any Whitney
Posted by rdhull, Tue Jun-14-22 05:05 PM
13462390, gotdamn.. what the hell were you into back then?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-15-22 07:48 AM
Borderline by Madonna? One of my favorites.

Return of the Mac? That shit was always hot af.. “yes I do”

any Whitney? say bruh, lol..
13462396, yeah whitney had some anthems kinda surprised about that one
Posted by mikediggz, Wed Jun-15-22 09:30 AM
i figd return of the mack would show up on this list tho

13462410, is it the voice in Return of the Mac? The adlibs?
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-15-22 12:10 PM
because that beat is hot af.

only thing I can think of with Whitney is she was the saturation of her songs. Those joints played endlessly on MTV.

13462420, i fux with Return of the Mac too but i thk its the voice for some ppl
Posted by mikediggz, Wed Jun-15-22 01:10 PM
and the adlibs lol.
13462466, The adlibs are the best part of the song!
Posted by DJR, Wed Jun-15-22 06:17 PM
They’re hilarious.

13462478, The voice, vocal inflections, everything about the vocals
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Jun-15-22 09:31 PM
It’s a great song on balance
But his voice and inflections are grating
The paradox here is I don’t know if it works without those elements

It’s a fun song, but for me I didn't like it until I developed an ironic enjoyment of it
13462461, Whitneys 80's pop hits were awful to me..yall see Jughead
Posted by rdhull, Wed Jun-15-22 05:55 PM
probably because thy were overplayed. Now I adore them and anything she sings

Im a Prince head and I did not like every song especially the oft laughed about "Jughead"

Now its endearing to me

I think in death, the songs, or voice, touch me in spots that weren't caring back then

13462469, Borderline was too pop compared to Physical Attraction when we

all thought she was black when they played it on the rnb radio stations

then she MTV-ed herself for the white audience with Borderline

13462479, Borderline is 80’s pop perfection IMO

13462382, Disclosure - Latch ft. Sam Smith
Posted by double negative, Tue Jun-14-22 08:35 PM
that shit sounded so corny to me and I liked disclosure

I heard it recently and I realized that shit is a bop.
13462393, Aw man I love that song.
Posted by Brew, Wed Jun-15-22 08:43 AM
Heard it for the first time in a while the other day, in fact.
13462400, yep, still a bop.
Posted by PROMO, Wed Jun-15-22 10:23 AM
13462385, Probably gospel, in general.
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Jun-15-22 01:21 AM
Gospel on the radio in my mom's car felt like punishment, in the pre-iProducts era. In the car with her these days, I tune out the choir-based songs, but the ones with modern production are tolerable to decent.
13462418, Anything Nelly.
Posted by Cold Truth, Wed Jun-15-22 01:00 PM
I don't know about "hard as shit", but I was way too deep in my backpacker sensibilities to appreciate or recognize the genius of his initial run at the time, with one exception. I always thought Ride With Me was dope.

At the time, it was all about Pharoahe, Mos/Reflection Eternal/Black Star, Dilated, Slum Village, Lyricist Lounge on one side, and the NY street cats like Wu, Nas, Mobb Deep, Jay, etc on the other end.

I still think the whole, "Andele, andele, mami Eiiiiiiiii, uh oh!" hook on EI is corny as fuck. but it is catchy.

But those Jay E beats are far better than I ever gave them credit for, and Nelly was a special talent. We've had singing rappers before, but he's unique IMO.

He pretty much owns this category for me.
13462429, was not a fan.. but I totally understood why it was selling
Posted by legsdiamond, Wed Jun-15-22 01:53 PM
same with Master P and a few others I couldn’t stomach at the time.

Mase and Puff still own this category as far as hating because they knew it was bad.. but it was good. I hated Mase but I know most of his rhymes and dude was actually clever with some of his wordplay.

but man.. being they were in NY and so close to all the good rappers it hurt me the most

Years later I’m thinking about all the ass I missed out on because I was outside the club with my backpack spittin hot fire when I could’ve been inside dancing and having fun. Probably would’ve stayed in the music biz too if I wasn’t such a purist.
13462470, i still can't stand his shit lol

13462467, Still Tippin
Posted by DJR, Wed Jun-15-22 06:21 PM
I was hating on all that Mike Jones, Paul Wall shit.

It kinda goes, though.
