whose taste i trust in movies is that it's crazy good.

here's the thing, Top Gun is my favorite movie all time (bad timing for me based on that movie caucasity post, LOL), so this movie could be the worst movie of all time and i'm still gonna like it.

i have tickets for opening day already w/ the homies.
13460854, They showed a 5 min scene before Dr. Strange

Found that trying to remember how long the ovation was for Fahrenheit 9/11 (20 minutes..which then reminds me of, somebody on okp referencing that and saying jesus christ could appear in front of them and pull a rabbit out of a hat and theyd stand 10 min tops)
13460884, It’s gonna be fire. TC ain’t dig this franchise up for it to be an avg movie

If we are talking franchises, both Indiana Jones and Terminator have two great movies (maybe better than any MI movie) and way more trash movies.

MI has about 4-5 really good movies, and maybe 1-2 not good ones (nothing as bad as the worst Indiana Jones or Terminator movies).

Posted by soulfunk, Fri May-20-22 03:17 PM

13461556, if you have to be in your 50s to appreciate Conan...
Posted by cgonz00cc, Sun May-29-22 03:07 PM
it sucks
13461031, This is another tacit admission that your take is exclusively tied to your age
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri May-20-22 08:45 PM
More specifically, your take is glued to the things you enjoyed when you were younger.

It's completely natural and normal, but there’s nothing wrong with overtly admitting that you just like what was hot in your era. Because it’s clear that you’re not being objective here.

I’m 41 And grew up on every actor and film you’ve named, and frankly, most of them don’t hold up. The OG Rambo doesn’t really count as an “action” film, and 2&3 are trash- and are absolutely laughable to name as anything even close to Cruise’s filmography.

When you say Over The Top- a movie i love, but acknowledge is trash- is better than MI, the beat you can do is say that it’s your subjective opinion, because everything from the writing to plot to action to use of the tech of it’s time is objectively better in MI. It’s not remotely an objective opinion, which, again, is fine. But shit, at least admit it.

Citing things like Conan make this an joke
It’s some “back in my day” shit like a motherfucker

Sure, Ahnold may have held the crown at a time when there wasn’t exactly a high bar for action films- so someone was going to come in and raise that shit.

Cruise came in and refined the everloving shit out of the genre, raised it several notches higher, and then delivered film after film at that level, over a prolonged period of time.

T2 was some cultural zeitgeist shit no doubt, and yet Edge Of Tomorrow is, bare minimum, an equally good film, and is also one of the best executed sci-fi films ever made.

Minority Report is better than damn near everything you mentioned except for T2, but it’s not like it doesn’t compete, and it sons Total Recall.

13461180, Sorry, 41 is too young to appreciate Conan.. you were a baby..
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Tue May-24-22 07:56 AM
I guess over the top went over your head because I was kidding there.. but the Tom Cruise obsession in here is really weird...the way you feel about him, people even younger might feel about The Rock (and they're wrong too)

13461209, The Rock doesn't have a single action classic...
Posted by Frank Longo, Tue May-24-22 11:43 AM
... in which he's the leading man. Not even close, really.

He's got one or two in which he's part of an ensemble, and he's got one or two where he's the league that they're passably enjoyable catch-it-on-TNT movies.

But no one's out there touting Red Notice or Skyscraper or Jungle Cruise as being on par with even the lower-tier Cruise output.

Besides, The Rock clearly has no interest in being the best action movie star ever-- he's far more interested in being a brand. He's cranking out one or two mid-to-awful movies a year while hosting game shows, narrating sitcoms, selling products online, and making inspirational social media videos.

The Rock might not even make the Top 25 action movie stars list.

Cruise doesn't have anything touching Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

I know everyone is on a Top Gun high right now, but the breaks must be pumped.

13460973, Man Crooz is *Thee* Movie Star.
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri May-20-22 11:52 AM
Granted, his lane is action, but his track record is downright absurd

Have you seen Knight & Day? That shit is like... I dunno.. Bourne + Bond + Fast & Furious, trimiming off every ounce of fat, + a massive dose of dry comedy.

No joke, it was and still is, one of the most fun movies I've ever watched. Diaz kills her part too. It's the perfect summer action movie.

It's Cruise at his Crooooooziest, if that makes sense. He's hamming it up like crazy, and after all the heavier action films he's done, it's like you forget he can ham it up with the best.
13460933, Shit....They said Will is outta here now...
Posted by The3rdOne, Fri May-20-22 09:52 AM
only right for Tom to reclaim his spot now with the numbers if we talking action star numbers
13461035, Shit, Will is still fairly high on this list
Posted by Cold Truth, Fri May-20-22 10:48 PM
The Bad Boys films
ID4 (sorry, but that’s a better film than T2 imo)
I, Robot
Enemy Of The State
MIB 1 and 3
I Am Legend
Hancock (criminally underrated and unfairly maligned IMO)

He’s got an excellent action resume, but he covers a lot of other lanes with his comedies and dramas, so his action filmography isn’t quite as dense as others.
13461076, Will’s success confirms Cruise’s GOAT status. Because Will
Posted by soulfunk, Sun May-22-22 09:12 AM
was able to build a top 5 career (and likely #2 in terms of action) just off of the Tom Cruise blueprint in terms of the mix of action films with dramatic roles (though Will has the added success in critically acclaimed biopics.)

The Matrix franchise

Constantine
Point Break
13461506, He's high up there.
Posted by Frank Longo, Sat May-28-22 10:11 AM
He's done fewer action movies than you'd think-- basically just the ones you named, Speed (also a classic)... then 47 Ronin, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Chain Reaction, Johnny Mnemonic, and... like, Street Kings. So he's got a positive batting average but also some real stinkers... and yeah, guys like Cruise and debatably Arnold have more dope action movies than Keanu has even *done.*

That said, I do really love Keanu and think he's generally underrated in this debate. In terms of American action stars only, he belongs ahead of guys like Willis and probably even Stallone imo-- and I think he deserves a lot of credit for how many stunts he does himself compared to someone like Harrison Ford.

Posted by Frank Longo, Sat May-28-22 10:14 AM
... probably the last time Tom Cruise made a movie, lmao.

Easily one of the best of the last decade, and this will easily end up one of the best movies of the year. It's big, it's emotional, and the stuntwork is absolutely bananas. Fuck the best plane action, this might be the best fucking *vehicle* action ever in a movie. Those are real actors flying real planes. You can't use CGI to replicate the impact it has on an audience watching the actors' faces experiencing real Gs-- and watching the leading actor in the movie clearly flying the plane himself in so many shots.

The GOAT delivers once again. Not much to be said.
